Black Desert – Are Console MMORPGs Worth It?

Black Desert is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Korean developer Pearl Abyss that was ported to PlayStation and Xbox in 2019. Originally on the PC it got a huge following with over 10 million registered users. Its huge open world and a new take on manual aiming in combat was a big appeal to gamers. Development had started back in 2018 on a prequel called Crimson Desert but it was later scrapped in favour of it being a stand-alone IP with its own storyline and new characters. Gameplay While Black Desert is gorgeous to look at and the gameplay is swift, smooth and addictive. The rest is a complete let down. One thing that this game does better than anyone else is the customization of your character. It is so in-depth it is unreal. So many hairstyles to ...

Hades – Best Hack ‘n Slash Ever?

Hades, developed and published by Supergiant Games (Pyre, Transistor and Bastion) is a colourful and humorous rogue-lite dungeon crawler based around Greek Mythology.  Do not think for a second that this is an RPG turn-based affair as while the influence may be loosely based on the strategy genre, the actual experience you have is a mixture of Supergiant's previous games.  Let's take a look! Gameplay In Hades, you play as Zagreus who is the son of Hades.  The aim is simple, escape from the underworld.  What proceeds is a very fast-paced hack and slash dungeon run whereby you get through as many rooms as you can before you inevitably die.  Don't worry, this is all part of the story, and it is through perishing that you progress the story. You begin the game in Tartarus, a deep ...

The game revolves an unpaid intern named Jackie on their first day at Fizzle and parent company Cubicle. Quickly unfolding as a beat-em-up rogue as Jackie explores the ruins of business start-ups in the basement. The present day setting and satirical plot makes for a unique rogue dungeon crawler as Jackie swaps her marketing degree for melee weapons. This review was based on the PC version of the game but Going Under is also available on Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. "Going Under is a satirical dungeon crawler about exploring the cursed ruins of failed tech startups. As an unpaid intern in the ...

Transformers: Battlegrounds – Not Much More Than Meets The Eye…

The Transformers are back! After a turbulent modern-history, the Transformers have returned to the video game world with Transformers: Battlegrounds. Creating a new Transformers video game franchise is tricky; Activision nailed the franchise with the incredible War for Cybertron and the follow-up Fall of Cybertron. We don't talk about part 3. After they butchered that franchise by tying it into the incredibly polarising movie franchise they did give the Generation 1 Transformers a go in the 2015 game Transformers: Devastation. Historically this licence is a tricky one to get right in video game form, but there has been success over the years. This is now the first major Transformers game since Activision lost the licence. What Coatsink has done with Transformers: Battlegrounds is ta...

Mortal Shell – Or Mortal Hell???

Mortal Shell is a single-player action RPG made by new developers Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack.  In their own words, it will "test your sanity and resilience in a shattered world".  Combat is strategic, deliberate, and unforgiving".  Mortal Shell is another game in the long line of "souls-like" games.  The difference between this and previous games who try to deliver on the formula is, Mortal Shell IS a "souls-like" game, just smaller.  There are enough nuances and unique features to separate it from its demonic brethren.  It's like Dark Souls has a little brother, a brutal little brother, and his name is Mortal Shell. Gameplay Set in the world of Fallgrim, it is already apparent how different it is to other games who take on the Souls doctrine.  Where others chose to hav...

Ultracore – The 90s Time Capsule of Shoot’em Ups

Ultracore by devs Strictly Limited Games is a fast-paced 2D side-scrolling arcade shooter that has been resurrected from the depths of an old hard drive from the 90s.  With the popularity of retro-looking 16bit style games, what better time to finish previous devs Digital illusions' (DICE) work and allow it to see the light of day in all its glory. Previously titled "Hardcore" and slated for a 1994 release onto Amiga and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and Mega-CD. How does it fare on the Switch in 2020? Gameplay If any of you are old enough to remember the 90s it was a great time for many side-scroller run and gun style games.  From Turrican to Contra, the game mechanics were a tried and tested favourite.  Ultracore is no different and for me, it is the authenticity of it all that seeps out...
