Half-Life: Alyx – Not A Half-Baked Experience…

The year is 2020 and whilst we've been living in what feels like some future dystopian nightmare as a killer virus spread across the globe, ironically two of the biggest games of the year are Final Fantasy VII and Half-Life. We haven't had a new entry in the Half-Life series since Valve announced an episodic trilogy in 2006, episode 2 of which launched a year later in 2007 and then... nothing... The wait for Half-Life 2 Episode 3, or Half-Life 3 or any new entry in the Half-Life franchise moved through the 5 stages of grief until all hope was lost and everyone moved on. Now, 13 years later we're able to play Half-Life: Alyx; a new entry in the Half-Life franchise exclusively for Virtual Reality. It won't sate your need to find out what happened after the cliffhanger of Episode 2, but it...

Mafia II Definitive Edition Review – Criminal!

Mafia II Definitive Edition is a remaster of the classic that came out 10 years ago from 2K Czech. The re-master is being handled by Hanger 13, a studio working under 2K’s banner. While this is a review of the PS4 version it has also been released on other platforms and it's worth noting that if you own the original on PC then you can upgrade to the Definitive edition completely free. Along with Mafia II, 2K is releasing a Definitive edition of Mafia III which again if you’re lucky enough to already own, the upgrade is completely free. To round off the trilogy, 2K will be releasing a ground-up remake of the original Mafia game which is due out in August. Now we have all that out of the way, let's see how well this re-master has been ‘made’. Gameplay As this is a re-release of a 10-yea...

Population Zero Preview – Zero Or Hero

A couple of months back, Enplex Games blessed us with some news of a new release. That new release is what we are looking at today, the MMO Survival, Population Zero. Originally released on Steam Early Access reviews started to come thick and fast. This, is to no surprise and survival games are extremely sort after, and decent ones at that. Read on to find out how I get on! Gameplay We all pretty much know by now what an MMO Survival game is going to be like. This includes gameplay and mechanics, they are all near enough the same in some shape or form. Obviously storylines can differ vastly. Keeping it simple, you are stranded on Keplar and alien planet. Your ship was destroyed and you have 7 days (168 hours) until human extinction. Meaning you have to repair the reactor and restart ...

Night Call Review – Très Mystérieux

Night Call by devs MonkeyMoon SARL and artwork by BlackMuffin Studio is a narrative-driven film noir-style murder mystery thriller set in the city of Paris. The game has dropped onto the Nintendo Switch and Xbox today.  In Night Call you play the role of taxi driver, a burly character with a shady past, let's get sleuthing! Gameplay From the outset, you wake up in hospital having suffered some kind of traumatic accident that has left you in a coma for a month.  It is revealed to you that you and your passenger were attacked by a murderer.  With your passenger dead, but you somehow still alive, you are blackmailed into assisting the police in an attempt to collect information from your fare-paying passengers to help identify the killer, or face prison yourself.  Your contact in the Po...

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Review – Definitively Monado

Originally released in June 2010 for the Nintendo Wii, Xenoblade Chronicles is a JRPG developed by Monolith Soft and Monster Games. It didn't sell as well as some other games on the Wii, but the fact that they decided to remaster and re-release it on the Nintendo Switch as Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition should say a lot about its popularity.  I, for one, missed out on Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii, so when I saw a remaster coming out I was pretty stoked to get my hands on it. After playing the sequel on Nintendo Switch, I just had to get myself a copy. When I was offered a review code to take a look, I leapt at the opportunity. Strap in, we're about to get into Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. Gameplay The story begins with a battle between two Colossal titans called...

Paradise Killer – Trouble In Paradise

It's not often I get to take a look at pre-alpha builds of games, so it's not really one of my strong suits to critique a game that's so early in its development. But when I was given the opportunity to look at Paradise Killer, I was instantly intrigued by its weird aesthetic and its detective-driven mystery-solving gameplay. I felt like it would be an interesting puzzle to solve. With that in mind, I set out on the timed demo build to see how far I could get. The following write-up is based entirely on an early pre-release build of the game that could be subject to major changes. Gameplay Paradise Killer is a whodunit murder mystery game, set on a strange island inhabited by gods. There have been many iterations of the island. It is destroyed and remade. Each iteration of the island is ...

John Wick Hex Review – Every Dog Has It’s Day

Given the nature of the John Wick franchise, it comes as no surprise that the blockbuster film would hand the license over to a video game developer. We have seen and experienced countless crossover titles but unfortunately, the majority of them lack the quality and passion that the source material deserves. This is why I was shocked to learn that the immensely talented Mike Bithell and his team were developing John Wick Hex, a prequel to the film series. Could this crossover hit the bullseye or will it miss the target? Gameplay John Wick is about relentless action at a break-neck speed. He floats between enemies and orchestrates a symphony of death in an instance. John Wick Hex successfully replicates the glorious violence in a considered, tactical, and cerebral manner. Each miss...

Dead or School Review – Perverted by Language

Dead or School first came to the public's attention via an ultimately unsuccessful Indiegogo campaign which began in 2016. Thankfully developers StudioNanafushi were able to find enough yen down the back of their sofas to finish their work, and it seems to be paying off as hype continues to build around this zombie-themed 2D action RPG. How does it fare against other titles in the already over-crowded Metroidvania genre? Dead or School mirrors Metro 2033 in terms of its basic plot. Many years ago mutant/zombie things overthrew the world, and the survivors took up residence in the Tokyo subway tunnels to avoid becoming dinner for the undead. You play as Hisako, the granddaughter of the village elder, who has long-since dreamed of visiting the surface. She has heard of wonderful place...

UNDER NIGHT IN-BIRTH Exe:Late[cl-r] Review – Flashy Fightin’ Anime Action

Originally developed by Ecole Software and French-Bread, Under Night In-Birth is a 2d fighting game based on a visual novel of the same name. Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r] is the most recently updated version of that game developed by French-Bread and Arc System Works. It released on the Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch on February 20th, 2020. For the purpose of this review, I'll be taking a look at the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r] is a fighting game I was looking forward to getting a hands-on with, because of my fondness for past Arc System Works fighting games like Blazblu. So without further delay, let's jump into it and see how it stacks up! Gameplay Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r] is a 2D anime stylized fighting game, develop...

Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition Review – Heaven or Hell?

Fans of the hack and slash genre have enjoyed a slew of games over that last decade and now, icons such as Bayonetta are inherently linked with the genre. However, over the last year, Capcom decided to re-introduce the architect of the genre: Dante. On the back of the success of the fantastic Devil May Cry 5, Capcom has re-released the classic, and long considered the best hack and slash game: Devil May Cry 3, but will it evoke the inner demon or should have it been left back in 2005? Gameplay Acting as a prequel to Devil May Cry, this makes the game easily accessible to new fans of the franchise. Although the narrative isn't the game's selling point, it does tell an engaging story with incredibly slick action sequences and one-liners that have been taken straight out of a classic...
