Launching My Seven Year-Old Daughter into a Life of Piracy with Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves has done well since launch. It shot to the top of the GfK charts for most physical sales in the UK alone, someones chicken got stolen, and over a million players jumped into the game on launch day. It has also become one of my favourite pirate games, and so I grabbed my seven year-old Daughter and threw her into a life of piracy. Before I rabbit on about the Sea of Thieves experience. I'm usually laid back with video games and parenting. My eldest (7 y/o) is innocent enough to play Grand Theft Auto 5 just to go for a walk in the park with no weapons. She's cute enough to jump onto Red Dead Redemption and tend to the horses pretending to brush them. She avoids violence. And with me near, she'll throw the controller at me, narrowly missing my head if a situation that inv...

Thumb Culture Retrospective – The Beatles Rock Band

There's nothing I love more than The Beatles, well, apart from David Bowie, Pulp and actually come to think of it there are quite a few things I love more than The Beatles. When it comes to me and Rock Band, I get on quite well with it. My main issue with the games has always been my below average health, specifically my wrists, it makes it pretty hard to play Rock Band for long periods of time. Still, that didn't stop me from putting the disc in and not stopping until I'd played through the entire story mode. What I do regret is playing every single song in one go in one day without a break. Writing this review currently is about as easy as coaxing a meerkat out of its hole with car insurance. I'll just preface this review with a note. I do in fact really enjoy The Beatles, and I play ...

We Sing Pop! Review – My My, How Can I Resist You?

We Sing Pop! by THQ Nordic and Le Cortex is the latest karaoke game in the We Sing series to come to PS4 and Xbox One and features "the hottest sounds from the world's biggest artists", so long as you are in agreement with the track listing.  Available as either a stand alone game singing into your smart phone or as a bundle with 2 gold topped microphones, let the drunken sing offs commence! (I don't condone drinking however it helps when it comes to singing!). Gameplay Boasting 8 game modes, 30 original song recordings and videos that span across the last 5 decades, We Sing Pop! certainly has something for everyone here.  The first hurdle that I came across was connecting the USB wired microphones.  Unfortunately for me, an issue with the front usb ports of my Playstation Pro made t...

Then boy do I have a treat for you, enter the world of Vrog by ByteRockers Games with me and join me on my PSVR journey.  Gameplay The game play for Vrog is simple. You don’t need a Dual Shock Controller. You don't need a set of move controllers either, all you need is that glorious PSVR headset and your good to go. All you have to do it look at what you want to eat and you'll eat it. Look at a lily pad and you'll jump to it. Really, its that simple.  As with the controls the game play of Vrog is pretty straight forward. There are two modes to choose from. First up is Arcade Mode, this is a timed affair. Ninety seconds to be precise. You hop from lily pad ...

Sonic Mania Review – Getting All The Feels

Sonic makes his return in Sonic Mania and he is bringing a few friends. The game is developed by Headcannon and PagodaWest Games and published by Sega for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. The game was announced to commemorate Sonic's 25th Birthday and features remastered 2D graphics and animations as well as stages from games of old, and a few new ones for good measure. Gameplay The gameplay of Sonic Mania is simplistic at heart, but as with every other Sonic game that has come before it, it has a great challenge. Following the events of Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic and Tails receive a powerful energy reading from Angel Island and board Tails's plane, the Tornado, to investigate. However, Doctor Eggman has sent an elite group of robots, the Hard-Boiled H...

Puzzle Showdown 4K Review – Pass Me My Pipe & Slippers?

Puzzle Showdown 4K developed by Kingdom Games (the devs behind the "Five" series on Steam) and published by 70 Times 7 LLC is a jigsaw based puzzle game that is available both on the Playstation store and Steam.  I must admit that when I was asked to review a jigsaw game I really thought it was going to be some horror/survival type featuring the well known doll from the Saw series.  How wrong was I!!  Instead of blood and all manners of fiendish traps I was faced with a family friendly jigsaw puzzle based game in which I am to try and piece together aesthetically pleasing 4K wallpapers on my screen. Gameplay Ok, so my first reaction as I sit infront of the PS4 Pro is "really?"  I remember playing similar games in the past on a Nintendo DS and that was only when I was really bored.  C...

Dino Frontier Review – Settlers Plus Dinosaurs

Ever wondered what it would be like to train dinosaurs just like Chris Pratt in Jurassic World? Well wonder no more with Dino Frontier by Uber Entertainment on the PSVR. Gameplay The game begins with you looking over a Western vista, you are then prompted to carry out a few gestures using the Move controllers. These gestures include holding the trigger buttons and moving outwards to zoom in. Rotating around to turn the viewpoint as well as pressing the Move button and dragging the area around. Alternatively just hold the trigger button to the hand signal for OK. Something that I spent a lot of time doing, and I mean a lot. In Dino Frontier you take the role of Big Mayor, taking control over the building and running of your small western town. You can pick up and drop settlers and also...

Unbox Newbie’s Adventure Review – Keep or Recycle?

Unbox - Newbie's Adventure by indie developer Prospect Games is a 3D platformer set in a colourful large world.  Taking control of a cardboard box, yes you heard me right, it is down to you to single handedly raise the reputation of the Global Postal Service (GPS) that is currently in a down hill spiral thanks to parcels going missing and failed delivery times.  Proving yourself "as a sentient, self delivering package", this game sounds so riveting, the enemy is introduced as someone called "Boss Wild" and the little evil minions, "Wild Cards". Gameplay Having sat through the intro that builds up to your dramatic arrival into the GPS I was under the impression that I was about to be unleashed into a fun, action packed world and couldn't wait to begin.  Through the tutorial it is expl...

Pixel Worlds Review – Minecraft This Is Not

In Pixel Worlds players can create their own worlds with building blocks and different items that range from furniture to clothing items. Players also build platform levels for others to play, marketplaces for trading the ingame items and info worlds to help new players, among other things. Privately held mobile games developer, Kukouri Mobile Entertainment developed this game for high end mobile devices like Apple iPhone, iPad and Android platforms, but for this review I played through Steam. Gameplay I had very little expectations going into Pixel Worlds. I knew basically nothing about it other than it was something like Minecraft, which I have played and enjoy for some relaxing building, but boy was this nothing like Minecraft! The first faux pas for me was that you had to choose ...
