Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries Review – All Systems Nominal

Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries is a game that I have been waiting for since about 2005. The Mechwarrior series has been all but dead since the last iteration released in 2002, aside from the online multiplayer-only Mechwarrior: Online. There hasn't been a single-player entry in the series since Mechwarrior 4 launched on PC in 2002. Now, finally, Piranha Games is bringing us giant stompy robots in a single-player game. Originally slated for release in December 2018, Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries was met with a slew of delays, pushing it back to December 10th 2019.  Now the time is here to hop in our BattleMechs and take on the review. Reactor: Online. Sensors: Online. Weapons: Online. All Systems Nominal. Let's do this, Pilots. Gameplay Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries is a first-person BattleMech...

Bubble Bobble 4 Friends – Fun 4 The Whole Family

Way back in 1986 there was a little game that existed in the darkened corners of arcades. That game was Bubble Bobble. A cute game about bubble blowing dinosaurs and fruit, made by Taito. It was later ported to home systems like the NES by Toei Company. Fast forward to 2019, and Taito is still developing Bubble Bobble games. Bubble Bobble 4 Friends is releasing in Europe on the Nintendo Switch on November 19th 2019. There will also be a special edition following in December. It will be releasing in North America sometime in 2020. For me, it's been a while since I've laid eyes on a Bubble Bobble game. So, when Bubble Bobble 4 Friends came across my desk, I was interested to see how the franchise had progressed. Let's dive into this European exclusive game and see how it is, shall we? Ready?...

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD Review – Keep Rollin’ Rollin’ Rollin’!

The year was 2002 and I remember the day vividly. Sitting in my room with a group of misfits that I labelled friends, I slowly reached for my sack (bag not knackers) and presented my latest purchase: Super Monkey Ball. With apprehension, our group of neanderthal metallers began exploring the cutesy, overly Japanese game and like a drug we were hooked. Our meetups became Monkey Ball sessions with each gamer perfecting the traits of their monkey and using them to get the upper hand in party and challenge modes. Fast forward to 2019, “Hey Jaz, you heard that Super Monkey Ball is being remastered?”. I spat out my monkey nuts, stopped The Monkees’ playlist and cancelled my banana split order at DK’s Diner. I had to speak to the neanderthals. We discussed the possibilities, would it be ...

Super Mario Maker 2 Review – Go Ahead, Make My Game

The original Super Mario Maker, which released on Wii U back in 2015, was a bolt from the blue, a rare example of Nintendo allowing their fan-base to tinker with the very building blocks of the Mushroom Kingdom to create their own Mario levels. It offered a robust toolset which allowed for players to experiment to their hearts' desires, and the Wii U's touch screen and stylus meant enjoyable levels could be created in a matter of minutes. Given the level of success, almost in spite of the underperforming console on which it appeared, a sequel was inevitable, and Super Mario Maker 2 was released in June 2019 to almost unanimous praise. Gameplay Most of the tools from the original title return here with a number of additions. As before, levels are constructed on a grid, and a wide varie...

Heave Ho Switch Review – The King of the Swingers

Heave Ho was developed by Le Cartel Studio, who were previously responsible for side-scrolling beat-em-up Mother Russia Bleeds. It is the latest in a long stream of quality titles which have been flung Switch-wards by publisher Devolver Digital. Heave Ho will release on August 29th 2019 at £8.99 (although, psst, if you pre-order it you can enjoy a 10% discount). In Heave Ho you play as a ball with two long arms whose only ambition is to use its preternatural grip and strength to clamber and catapult its body across a series of 2D obstacle courses in order to reach a chequered flag. Heave Ho can be played by up to four people simultaneously, which is where the insanity reaches a peak. Gameplay The controls for Heave Ho are very simple. The left stick dictates the orientation of the...

Diesel Brothers Truck Building Simulator PC Review – Look Mom, I’m A Mechanic

I often watch the 5 min creative videos you see floating around on social media and I think to myself "yep, I could do that, seems totally easy to recreate" and decided to watch a few Diesel Brothers shows myself which again I was like " looks hard, but I bet I could manage to build my own giant pink truck!" Turns out I'm an absolute wet wipe at building anything other than a lego figurine. Diesel Brothers; Truck Building Simulator  is brought to you by developers Code Horizon the same guys who brought us  games such as Gold Rush, It is published by both Code Horizon and PlayWay S.A The wonderful humans who blessed us with games such as house flipper and car mechanic simulator  Gameplay The game is based off the actual television show Diesel Brothers which I have often found my...

Anthem – A Game I Still Want to Love

When Anthem released back in February, I was looking forward to a lengthy relationship with a game that brought refreshing gameplay and a new IP to the table from a studio that was well-known for its deep and rich storytelling. I spent more time streaming Anthem than I had anything else in a long while and I thought for sure I had found my new home. Post-launch plans were in place by BioWare for future content to keep the game fresh and things were really looking like they were on track for an avid community for a while to come. This new, shiny treasure was going to be amazing! Sadly though, healthy infancy wasn’t in the cards for Anthem. Almost immediately after the game went live for the full launch, it was already drawing criticism for falling short of its massive potential. Play...

Steel Division 2 Beta PC Preview – Grand Strategic Gold

Over the past few weeks, I've had the opportunity to play some of Eugen Systems new World War II Real-time strategy game Steel Division 2. Having played the first Steel Division, I was thoroughly excited to give the sequel a proper try. This time around, the RTS action takes place on the eastern front, instead of Normandie. Steel Division 2 will be the first game from Eugen Systems to be independently published. I was a bit worried Steel Division wouldn't get a sequel due to almost half of the development team going on strike over unpaid wages in early 2018. Steel Division 2 was initially slated to be released on Steam on April 4th but was delayed to May 2nd. It has now been delayed again until June 20th so that the dev team could take player feedback and make changes to the game where ...
