eFootball PES 2021 Season Update – And Breathe

Welcome to another football game from Konami, right off the bat we know that this version of PES is purely an update from the 2020 version of the game, just with updated player data and player rosters. Now while people will be screaming saying that it's just an update of the previous years game blah blah blah. Isn't that what people have been asking for though? Rather than a full-price new game each year, give us an update to the previous year and roll on a 2 yearly cycle for new games. Konami has done just that, granted the next generation of consoles and PC hardware being released may have made them make this decision and concentrate on dropping the mother of all football game in 2021 on the new systems, only time will tell I guess. For now, let's concentrate on what you can expect when ...

Necromunda: Underhive Wars – Necromundane

There have been many games released set in the Warhammer 40k universe. There have been some particularly outstanding titles, but not all of them were winners. From RTS to shooters, and just about everything in between, Warhammer 40K has a huge library of games. Most recently released was Necromunda: Underhive Wars. Developed by Rogue Factor, and published by Focus Home Interactive for Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. For this review, I'll be taking a look at the Playstation 4 version of the game. So let's roll up our sleeves and take a look. Deep below the nightmarish, polluted hive cities of Necromunda, in the twisted, vertiginous, dark tunnels of the Underhive, rival gangs fight to the bitter end for personal power, wealth, survival and the honour of their Houses. Only the stron...

Hotshot Racing – Drifting All The Way To The Podium!

Somebody hit the turbo button on the indie scene a few years ago now and kicked it into high gear.  It has flourished wheel to wheel along with retro gaming, so naturally, new retro-inspired games are a big thing.  Hotshot Racing is a nostalgic love letter to the 90s arcade racing games.  Developed by Lucky Mountain Games and Sumo Digital, who have a fine racing pedigree including Outrun 2, TOCA 3, DiRT 2, F1 2011, and Forza Horizon 2 to name a few.  Published by Curve Digital who specialise in indie games, Hotshot Racing is a very British affair and will be power sliding onto consoles and PC on September 10th.  Now its time to reminisce about skipping school to go to the arcade and pumping 50p coins into Daytona USA. Disclaimer: Thumb Culture does not in any way condone skipping school...
Manifold Garden – Up Is Down And Down Is Up?

Manifold Garden – Up Is Down And Down Is Up?

Created as a debut title for William Chyr Studios by a small team of programmers, Manifold Garden is an interesting take on the puzzle-platformer adventure.  Take what you know about physics and toss it out the window. That knowledge is no good here. Up is not necessarily up, and down isn't always down.  Created by William Chyr, who wanted to create a puzzle game that he felt, as a player, he could finish. Manifold Garden was initially revealed with the name Relativity, referring to the M.C. Escher work that inspired it. There are a few behind-the-scenes type videos available on YouTube if you're curious about how this games impossible geometry was pulled off. Currently Manifold Garden is available on Playstation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. PC and Mobile ports are being worked on. ...

WRC 9 is the latest game to be developed by Kylotonn (KT Racing) and published by its parent company Nacon (previously Bigben Interactive) and is the official game of the 2020 World Rally Championship.  Kylotonn and Nacon have been working together successfully since WRC 5 to produce these games so it is fair to say they are very much qualified to continue the series, with WRC 10 and WRC 11 confirmed. Project Cars 3 – Not So SIMple

Project Cars, a name synonymous with simulation racers in the past. However, times are a-changing and with Project Cars 3 we have a bit of a SHIFT in the focus that Slightly Mad Studios brought to the track. This is now, in my opinion, a tremendous arcade-style racing game. Read on to find out more! Gameplay So you picked up Project Cars 3 expecting it to be a pure simulation racer, expecting it to be suited to your steering wheel, expecting a lot! Now I can imagine that you might be disappointed as it is neither a sim racer anymore, nor is it suited to be used on your steering wheel. In my opinion that isn't a bad thing in the slightest, and let me tell you why. Project Cars 3, might be the most fun I have had racing around a track in a long time. There I said it! Whilst most ...

Mortal Shell – Or Mortal Hell???

Mortal Shell is a single-player action RPG made by new developers Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack.  In their own words, it will "test your sanity and resilience in a shattered world".  Combat is strategic, deliberate, and unforgiving".  Mortal Shell is another game in the long line of "souls-like" games.  The difference between this and previous games who try to deliver on the formula is, Mortal Shell IS a "souls-like" game, just smaller.  There are enough nuances and unique features to separate it from its demonic brethren.  It's like Dark Souls has a little brother, a brutal little brother, and his name is Mortal Shell. Gameplay Set in the world of Fallgrim, it is already apparent how different it is to other games who take on the Souls doctrine.  Where others chose to hav...

Cuphead – Don’t Deal with the Devil

Cuphead is the first and only game developed and published by the Canadian indie developers StudioMDHR.  Founders and brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer tried to make a game like Cuphead in 2000 but lacked the tools to do so.  Following the success of indie game Super Meat Boy in 2010, the brothers decided to give it another go and so development on Cuphead had begun.  It was first announced in 2014 and gained instant fandom and admiration for its difficulty and art style.  Cuphead was released 3 years later on Xbox One and PC.  It later appeared on Switch, and now it's on PS4, despite StudioMDHR saying "there will be no PS4 version".  Cuphead is certainly a novel looking game, does it feel as old as its 1930s aesthetic? Gameplay The story, in a nutshell, is that two happy little cu...
