FIFA 18 – A 2 Good 2 Bad Review

It's that time of year again when EA release their iteration of FIFA to go up against Konami's PES, this year FIFA getting the 18 treatment. So how does FIFA 18 hold up against the rest and what do we think of the game as a whole. Rather than give you a run down of what the game is about, i'm going to come at this from a different angle. For those of you that watch Match Of The Day 2 you will know all about this. The feature on the show where the pundits look back at the weekends action and give their best and bad bits. So without further ado, lets take a look at the 2 Bad side first (I always have bad news first) 2 Bad New Standing Tackle So a new standing tackle system has been introduced where you have to charge up your tackle, the further your tackle bar goes up the harder the tackl...

WWE 2K18 Review – Laying The Smackdown

WWE 2K18 is the latest iteration of the WWE franchise from 2K Sports. Being developed in collaboration between Yuke's and Visual Concepts we are treated with some great visuals, but some frustrations at the same time. Let's take a look at how the game stands up in a market where it has no competition. Gameplay Controlling your wrestler in WWE 2K18 is straight forward, left stick to move, left stick in combination with a specific button to carry out grabs and strikes. It starts getting a bit confusing when you are trying to perform a specific move, say for example picking an opponent off the mat when you have downed them. This became my first frustration, each button has a number of actions assigned to them depending on the type of button press you carry out. Example in point, the Circle ...

NHL 18 Review – Newbies Start Here

We are at that part of the year once more when EA Sports release the latest versions of their sports series.  With Fifa 18, NBA Live and Madden NFL out on the market. I was pleased to have the opportunity to play EA's NHL 18 to see how it had been improved from last years offering, and also to let me do my bit to raise awareness for a sport that over in the UK isn't really well followed. In the sporting charts you wouldn't be surprised to learn that Fifa 17 on the PS4 sold 1,250,586 (VGChartz) within the first few months of its release in 2016 making it most likely to adorn the shelves of gamers up and down the country.  Lets face it, football is massive over here.  Ice hockey on the other hand is not so popular, and in contrast the UK sales for NHL 17 were a mere 3745 (VGChartz) copies...

NBA Live 18 Review – Swish or Air Ball?

NBA Live 18 returns for another year that, in previous years, has been dominated by a certain other basketball game. However, EA Tiburon have returned with what they feel could be the game that puts them back on top. Let's have a look and see! Gameplay There are a few new gameplay elements this year, included a new one on one control system. This sees you having to get the defender off balance by using dribble moves, and likewise as a defender you have to guess the direction the offence is going to drive. Guessing correctly and timing it right cuts off their attack and gives you an opportunity to steal the ball and start off on a counter attack. Using a defensive assist button allows you to stay in front of the ball carrier and then it makes it easier to try and cut them off when they dr...

Project Cars 2 Review – Start Your Engines

Slightly Mad Studios (SMS) are the guys behind the amazing Project Cars racing game. Scratch that last part! Project Cars is by no means a game. Project Cars is a full-blown racing simulation. Anyway Slightly Mad Studios are back again. This time they bring us Project Cars 2 which is available on Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4. Before I start this review, I know our regular readers will be wondering why I’m reviewing this game and not Stuart. Well as it happened the gods smiled down on me and wiped his hard drive and then sent him to EGX. So Stuart didn’t get the chance to hammer his Fanatec set-up this time around. So here I am with an evil glint in my eye getting ready to review Project Cars 2. I have to admit this is a favourite genre for me so I personally purchased this game ins...

The Hunter Call of the Wild – Winner Winner Venison Dinner

This is my experience with theHunter Call of the Wild. A title that finds you wandering through an open plain surrounded by towering, autumnal trees, and you’re waiting patiently for your sights to hold steady over the left lung of a lone deer, waiting for the wind to reduce, finger on the trigger, then BAM. The bullet leaves your glossy rifle, travels through the air and the wind carries it from the lung to the neck. You still get a hit, the deer jolts in agony, and runs away into the forest. Time to get tracking and claim your trophy. theHunter Call of the Wild is a huge open-world game created by developer, Expansive Worlds and publisher, Avalanche Studios. It was launched in February 2017, with the previous title The Hunter that was released in 2009 by developer, Emote Games and als...

PES 2018 Review – Championship Candidate or Relegation Reject

As someone who has been a keen PES player since its first release back in 2001 (when it emerged like the Phoenix from the ashes of International Superstar Soccer). This is a review I’ve been looking forward to doing. The release of these games reminds of the start of a real football season when you have the hopes and dreams of your team pulling something out to amaze you. Have Konami done that to us this year? Well let’s find out… I’m sure that by this stage PES doesn’t need any kind of real introduction or explanation of what the game is. So I won’t bore you with a breakdown of what the game is about, after all everybody knows what football is (or at least I hope so.) Gameplay So this year PES has given us much of the same as last year in terms of what is included in this title. Ther...

Mantis Burn Racing – Review – New BattleCars DLC!

I've played a fair few racing games in my lifetime and thankfully have seen the evolution from the days of Super Sprint and Outrun to the latest offerings like F1 2018 and Project Cars.  Car games are fun be they realistic or arcade-style.  For me, there's nothing better than being rewarded by a win for your efforts to race a car around a course.  Indie Developer Voofoo games' Mantis Burn Racing has graced the Xbox One, PS4 and Steam store since the middle of 2016 and was announced at the recent EGX in Birmingham, UK that a Nintendo Switch version is in the pipeline. In a moment I will talk about the new BattleCars DLC, however its worth quickly mentioning a little about Mantis Burn Racing incase you've never played it before! Gameplay So as I previously mentioned the game is a to...

NASCAR Heat 2 Review – Rubbing’s Racing Harry

NASCAR Heat 2 is quite clearly a sequel to NASCAR Heat, but having not played the first iteration I was able to go in to this game with a clear mind. Although how much of a good thing that will be is left to be seen. Developed by Monster Games and published by 704Games, NASCAR Heat 2 takes on the massively popular racing franchise over in the USA. So does it cut the mustard with an F1 fan like myself? Gameplay The gameplay of NASCAR Heat 2 is summarised in the following words, Round And Round. Essentially it's an oval racer which challenges you to draft your opponents in order to overtake and make your way through the field. Sounds simple right? Well, you would be a fool to believe so. It's tactical and brutal, go down to low on the corners and you can quickly find yourself facing onc...

The Evolution Of Football In Gaming

Hey there fellow football fans. With the start of the new season comes the annual release of the 2 mainstay gaming titles: FIFA & PES. I’m sure this is a topic that we could sit and talk about for hours given the sheer volume of titles at our disposal. All of which have a plethora of features and pleasing attributes. However as both FIFA and PES are due for release over the coming weeks, we don’t really have the time for that kind of debate. So I thought it would be nice instead to just have a quick look over the origins of a few of the football titles from our past that shaped Football gaming as we know it (in my opinion at least). FIFA International Soccer (EA Games): For FIFA it all started back in 1993 on the Mega Drive/SNES. This is a key title in my opinion as not only was i...
