Megabyte Punch Review – Megacs RO-BATTLE!

I'm always up for checking out fun little indie games, especially when I get to play them on the Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch is a platform I have argued multiple times is the perfect place to play indie games. So when Megabyte Punch came across my desk, I got kind of excited to take a loot at it. Developed and published by Team Reptile for Steam and Nintendo Switch, Megabyte Punch released on the 8th of May, 2020. For the purpose of the following review, I'll be taking a look at the Nintendo Switch version of the game, So let's get down to business and see what's what with Megabyte Punch. Gameplay Take one part platformer, add a dash of a fighting game, and a pinch of Metroidvania style exploration and what you end up with is something fairly unique. Megabyte Punch is at its cor...

Gigantosaurus: The Game Review – Roarsome Fun!

Gigantosaurus: The Game developed by Wildsphere and published by OutRight Games is a fun, family-friendly game set in the prehistoric world of the Gigantosaurus cartoon found over on the Disney channel.  The dino tale is a mixture of part saving the world and part super race and features four playable dinos; Rocky, Tiny, Mazu and Bill who each have their own special ability. Gameplay Before I go on I must say this.  Gigantosaurus is for young children.  From the opening animated scene, you will able to tell from the slow rhyming narrative that what lies before you will not be the hardest of challenges for you, but for younger people, you may need to offer some assistance on occasion. Gigantosaurus feels and plays a little like Spyro as you run around the cartoony map littered with...

The Eternal Castle [REMASTERED] – Flashback to Another World

The Eternal Castle [REMASTERED] claims to be a remake of a lost 1987 title but don't be fooled. This is not a remaster but rather a reinterpretation of adventure games of the 80s. Those of us who remember classics such as Another World, Flashback and Prince of Persia will instantly be aware of what the title will entail.  However, does the genre need to be resurrected and will the mechanics work with modern audiences? Gameplay You are a pilot that has crashed onto a strange world. In order to escape, you need to gather parts to fix your ship. Each part is located in three distinct and uniquely designed worlds. Not only are they visually different, but the gameplay mechanics also alter on each making each area feel distinct. Whether you are mowing down enemies, sneaking past creatures...

Fallout 76: Wastelanders DLC Review – Take Me Home, Down Country Roads

It’s fair to say it's been a bumpy ride, with a lot of turbulence in the eighteen months or so since Fallout 76 was released by Bethesda. I’m not going to dive too deeply into the chequered history of the latest instalment of the Fallout franchise, suffice it to say that until now, it really hasn’t been a hit with the fan base. At launch and during the months beyond, the discernable lack of NPCs and any kind of real storyline in Fallout 76 was perhaps the biggest and most confusing oversight on the part of Bethesda. After all, questing, side-questing, engaging storytelling, snarky dialogue and you know, actual NPC's with some character is at the heart of the entire Fallout franchise. So it’s an actual joy to be able to visit Appalachia now and meet a range of NPCs in the form of the...

Separation, PSVR Review – Glorious solitude or tortured isolation?

It seems very apt in these strange times to be reviewing a game about separation and isolation especially one that is somewhat different from the normal PSVR fare.  Solo developer Recluse Industries (Martin Wheeler) has released his first-ever PSVR game in the shape of Separation. It is essentially a very personal game and is born out of the death of the developer's father in 2010 and Wheeler's consequential episodes of depression. Wheeler has said that he wanted to create a space where he could explore the feelings of emptiness and loss. He intriguingly describes Separation as an "Ambient Adventure", and a spiritual journey into epic desolation with relaxed exploration with some puzzle elements and no time pressure. He is at pains to state that it is not your usual PSVR walking simulator ...

In Other Waters Review – Trouble In The Deep

I've been having a hard time putting into words my thoughts about In Other Waters. It's a hard sell, but it is an experience like no other I've played before. Crafted by the one-man team Jump Over The Age, In Other Waters won the Jury Prix award at IndieCade Europe in 2019. Gareth Damian Martin, the man behind the game, brings a unique blend of experiences to game development, from games journalism and graphic design to experimental literature. He's put his skills to the test, making his first game In Other Waters. Winning a Jury Prix award at a European indie game festival with your first game is pretty impressive, so let's dive in and check it out, shall we? Gameplay In Other Waters is a nice narrative-driven exploration game. In it, you play as an A.I. controlling a diving suit contai...

Boot Hill Bounties Review – Joycon Wayne

Yeeehaw friends. It's time to posse up with the JoyCon and ride into the sunset. Gunslinging has hit the Switch. Ok, so it's not quite the port at the top of everyone's wish list, but when I tell you Boot Hill Bounties is Red Dead Redemption crossed with Earthbound, you know to expect a hog-killin' time. Brought to us by Experimental Gamer Studios, Boot Hill Bounties is available now on Switch and Steam.   Gameplay Describing a game as a retro RPG can mean a lot of things and will not paint the same picture for everyone. So, to give you a better idea of what you'll be playing, let me start by telling you Boot Hill Bounties comes directly from the school of Earthbound. The game is full of quirky characters, funny dialogue, and fourth wall breaking moments. But, it's not ...

Moons Of Madness Review – Exploring The Depths Of Darkness

Welcome to life on Mars, or at least, something like it. Moons Of Madness, developed by Rock Pocket Games and published by Funcom, is a first-person sci-fi psychological horror adventure that’s packed with jump scares and puzzle-based problems. A deeply unsettling combination in more ways than one. As Shane Newehart, an engineer based on the Trailblazer Alpha Mars research station, you’re given a first-person insight into your character’s struggle with his sanity amid increasingly strange and frightening situations on the red planet.  The opening sequences of Moons Of Madness make it clear that this is no ordinary space exploration game. Right from the off, you’re thrust into a truly dysfunctional scenario in the form of one of Shane’s nightmares. Claustrophobically dark space stat...

Exit the Gungeon Review – Exit, Strategy

Enter the Gungeon released on Nintendo Switch back in late 2017. For the uninitiated, Enter the Gungeon was a rogue-lite with more guns than you can shake a broomstick at, and it hooked me immediately with its fast-paced, bullet-hell action and wild boss design. The story, such as it was, revolved around four characters entering a towering structure called The Gungeon, which was populated by sentient, aggressive bullets. They had each heard the legend of a revolver which could kill the past and wipe out mistakes. Weapons ranged from bog-standard shotguns to screen-dominating lasers. And that's not all, we're talking egg-firing grenade launchers, a guitar which launched wild solos as you hold down the trigger... even a t-shirt cannon. Exit the Gungeon picks up after each character achiev...

It's a good time to be Star Wars fan. Whilst we wait for the next big release for the franchise, classic titles are hitting modern consoles. The latest port sees Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy hit the Nintendo Switch and PS4. Brought back to us by Aspyr, the online multiplayer classic comes to Nintendo Switch with modernized controls. Take on the role of a new student eager to learn the ways of the Force from Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. You can pick it up here, but first, read on to find out if you should. Gameplay Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is a hybrid 3rd person/FPS action game, and is actually the 3rd...
