Trash Goblin: The Artist of Brimhaven DLC – PC Review

Read Time:3 Minute, 5 Second

I’m happy to return to Trash Goblin with its new DLC called The Artist of Brimhaven where we will be restoring an old ruined district with some old friends! I have reviewed the base game for PC, if you’re interested in that. The DLC is out now on Steam for £7.45, which seems fair to me.

It’s not trash, it’s art!

A wall of text on a black background, the text is white. Text reads "Aimon has returned after a prolonged recovery period, and - after a lifetime of slightly shady shenanigans - has a plan to balance the scales. Rumours are flooding the streets about a new supernatural threat and no ones seems to be doing anything about it! And in a little trinket shop, a goblin wakes to a new day. Good morning, goblin..."
The intro before the DLC starts.

Gameplay

The DLC picks up right where Trash Goblin ends, with Aimon returning and suggesting a new business venture for the benefit of Silver City. He asks us for aid in renovating the ruined district of Brimhaven, where he will need our trinkets to catch the eye of new benefactors. As the DLC name suggests, the player will become an artist, and with this we add a new tool to our repertoire, called Hughe. This is a device that we will use to extract or apply colour to our trinkets. New colours options will only be added when removing them from other items as there are no way to purchase them. When customers request items, they may now ask for the trinket to be recoloured. You won’t need to actually paint it, you can just remove the colour, and they will be happy with it.

A trinket that looks like a russian egg with a face of a grandma. The mouth has a piece coming out that spirals, and the whole thing is on a bed pan. there are other items scattered all around a table.
Not the worse thing I have made, but hey it’s art.

The renovating itself will have certain key characters – like your aunty, or Jaq – asking for specific trinkets for the quest. After giving them, players will wait a few in-game days before the building itself is fully built. Some of the buildings will require some gold instead, but since the DLC starts near the end of Trash Goblin, I expect players to have a small stockpile.

Graphics & Audio

I love how the city of Brimhaven looks after renovating. It’s very colourful and has an air of whimsy to it. I also love the designs for many of the new trinkets, but a particular favourite of mine is Aunty’s trinket of choice; the Melty Tea Set. You also get a reveal of what Donoval’s baby grandma’s looks like; very odd and adorable. Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of new things to see, but what is there is still certainly full of character, colour and love like before.

A character that looks like a purple, humanoid chameleon is looking up with her mouth open as if to show she is shouting. The speech bubble next to her says "Because no one likes doing the washing up!". Behind her is a town with buildings with either a red or blue roof.
God, I love Esme as a character.

Longevity

The steam page suggests that the game has over 5 hours of content for you to enjoy. As well as a few more achievements to obtain. It didn’t take me that long to beat, because, like I said, I had gold on hand and making the art wasn’t too demanding.

Final Thoughts

It was great to return to Trash Goblin and finally see what Aimon had in store for me after his run in with the lich. I enjoyed the new colouring tool and making different art, but I wish there were some other upgrades we could have unlocked for the shop. I did have a major issue that stopped me from progressing entirely. However, the team were very helpful with fixing this. After that there was no issue. Story-wise it was nice to meet old faces and see Brimhaven come to life, and the other side story unfold.

So I will be giving Trash Goblin: The Artist of Brimhaven, the Thumb Culture Gold Award. It is a fun continuation and at a fair price.
