The Evolution Of Football In Gaming

Hey there fellow football fans. With the start of the new season comes the annual release of the 2 mainstay gaming titles: FIFA & PES. I’m sure this is a topic that we could sit and talk about for hours given the sheer volume of titles at our disposal. All of which have a plethora of features and pleasing attributes. However as both FIFA and PES are due for release over the coming weeks, we don’t really have the time for that kind of debate. So I thought it would be nice instead to just have a quick look over the origins of a few of the football titles from our past that shaped Football gaming as we know it (in my opinion at least). FIFA International Soccer (EA Games): For FIFA it all started back in 1993 on the Mega Drive/SNES. This is a key title in my opinion as not only was i...

Surf World Series Review – Radical or Wipeout?

Surf World Series by independent games developer Climax Studios is a daring plunge into the extreme sport of, you've guessed it! surfing.  With my surfing expertise comprising of a few hours playing Sega's Soul Surfer down the arcade and an attempt at the sport while on a stag do down in Newquay I was excited to have the opportunity to don my long banned Hawaiian holiday shorts and start yelling "Cowabunga" and "Radical" around the room. Gameplay Surf World Series begins with a lovely fullscreen video intro featuring professional surfer Tom Lowe explaining how surfing makes him feel set to stimulating visuals of crashing waves and surfing moments.  It reminded me a little of how the Tony Hawks games used to begin however in this instance the soundtrack is more calming as opposed to the p...

F1 2017 Review – Racing Got A Little Faster

With Codemasters returning to form last year with F1 2016, it left me wondering "How can they make this better?" Well with F1 2017 they seem to have been able to do just that! The new box art features some new drivers on the grid as well as the biggest smile from Daniel Ricciardo you will ever see. Why nobody else is smiling will be a mystery forever. I reckon Ricciardo just let out some gas and is loving it! With new regulations, new cars, new drivers, Codemasters have once again absolutely smashed it out of the Red Bull Ring with this game. Bringing new features, better visuals (most of the time) and great control. Lets dive in and find out why. Gameplay As with last years game, F1 2017 brings controls that are responsive, light and rewarding when you hit that apex perfectly....

Tiny Trax PSVR Review – Scalextric It Is Not

Tiny Trax by FuturLab can only be described as a Scalextric virtual reality game. When I first laid eyes on this game, I was flooded with nostalgic feels. However, when I got into the game those feels dissipated and left me with a small sense of disappointment. Only a small sense though. Gameplay Donning the VR headset for the first time you are greeted with pretty colours all around. Then dumped into a bedroom which is actually really well detailed. You then pick a track and race. Picking between six vehicles which have no difference in statistics, you then chose from either a single race, or a cup. I recommend going straight to the cup, you get to race on all the tracks, and doing so unlocks the tracks for use in single race. Regardless of where you finish. What sets this apart from...

Pro Cycling Manager 2017 Review – Just A Hint

Pro Cycling Manager 2017 by Cyanide Studios and Focus Home Interactive is the equivalent of Football Manager, you pick a team out of the myriad of those available and take them through a season. Racing at the highest echelon of the sport. Gameplay Pro Cycling Manager 2017 gives you the freedom to control a team as you see fit. You control the day to day workings, having to answer emails, deal with the sponsors as well as ensuring your riders are fit and healthy. The menus are vast and sometimes complicated. Although a brief period of time in each of them will give you the necessary understanding with what you have to do. Skipping through the days, answering a few emails, checking sponsor objectives and eventually getting to a race. First things first is picking your team for the race ...

The Golf Club 2 – The Best Golf Game Ever

A little while ago I professed my absolute love for The Golf Club and how much I hoped that The Golf Club 2 would be all I dreamed about. You can check out the previous article here So now with the released of The Golf Club 2, I finally got to get my gloved left hand on the controls. The game once again being developed by HB Studios they have given us what could be the greatest golf game released. Gameplay The Golf Club 2 builds upon the unique gameplay that made the first game such a joy yet a nightmare at the same time. Hitting straight shots is no easy feat, having the slightest deviation from the thumbstick causing the ball to veer off drastically either way. The game takes you through a pretty comprehensive tutorial when you first start the game. Taking you through shot shaping, ...

3 Things to Move F1 2017 From Good To Great

Artificial Intelligence The AI on the F1 2016 career was brilliant, drivers moving out of the way if you are lapping them. Allowing you through when you are on a fast lap in qualifying. Each driver seemed to have their own characteristics. Thankfully Maldonado wasn't in the game! Move onto a custom online championship and every driver suddenly turns into a totally useless moron. You drive up the inside and overtake into a corner, and BANG you get sideswiped. Driving nice and slowly on the formation lap warming your tyres. BANG, the driver behind just decides that he wants to slam into your rear end. Don't even think about settling for a mid grid start, that first corner with all these morons about turns into a destruction derby. So what do Codemasters have to address? simple, just give...

DiRT 4 Review – Get Down and DiRTy

DiRT 4 developed by Codemasters is the sequel to DiRT Rally, although it feels more like a lovechild between DiRT Showdown and Colin McRae Rally (2013). The game brings a lot of what fans enjoyed in DiRT Rally and builds on that with brilliant additions. Gameplay When you first load up the game you are confronted with a decision to make. You have two control models in DiRT 4, Gaming and Simulation. Gaming giving slightly easier handling than its simulation counterpart. Although you are able to full customise the controls to allow traction control and stability control, among a whole host of other options. Once through the options you get thrown into the DiRT academy, this is where you essentially can drive around getting used to the current car. Pulling handbrake turns around cones an...

Le Tour De France 2017 Review – Cycling Got Tactical

Le Tour de France 2017 is developed by Cyanide Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive and attempts to bring the excitement of the event to consoles. Having never played a Tour De France game before I was intrigued to see what the appeal was. I mean they release them pretty much every year so somebody is buying them somewhere. If you are unaware of this annual cycling event then you probably aren't reading this review, but for those of you who want to know, let's get stuck in. The Tour de France is an annual multiple stage bicycle race primarily held in France, while also occasionally making passes through nearby countries. The race was first organized in 1903 to increase sales for the newspaper L'Auto; which is currently run by the Amaury Sport Organisation. The race has been held...

5 Top Tips For Project Cars

With Project Cars 2 rapidly approaching there may well be a large increase of racing fans picking up the first iteration of the game to get some practice. Well sit back and read the Thumb Culture 5 Top Tips for getting the most out of your car. These tips are straight forward, but are very important if you are looking at taking your racing to the next level. So without further delay, let us show you the green light. Tip #1 Turn off the driving line. This one might seem daunting at first, but trust me, turn off the driving live...it tells you to brake early and doesn't give you the best times on the track. Sure it shows you the racing line, but when playing against other drivers and trying to overtake you never really race on the racing line. Tip #2 Learn the track Once you hav...
