The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Review – Not Half Bad, All Bad!

Towards the end of 2019, Netflix released the lovingly crafted prequel to the classic fantasy adventure film The Dark Crystal. Following the critical and fan admiration to the series, BonusXP announced The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a new tactical game based on the Netflix prequel. Instantly this grabbed my attention. I love Jim Henson’s work and had recently finished the fantastic Fire Emblem: Three Houses. To me, this sounded like the perfect game. The time came. I loaded up the game and was greeted with that familiar title, which hit me deep in my nostalgia balls. The initial cutscene was a throwback to 80s gaming, with cool hand-drawn graphics and text boxes to introduce the narrative. The game started, and that’s when it went downhill. Gameplay Creating a game bas...

Heroland Nintendo Review – The Backseat Warrior

Have you dreamed of being the hero of your own epic adventure? Heroland is the place for you. Face epic monsters, explore the darkest of dungeons and carve your legend. Well, that's on the pamphlet for this park at least. Pick up this game, and you can live out your dreams of being a tour guide! Ok, so it's not the conventional dream. But when members of the development team worked on Mother 3, what else would you expect? Developed by FuRyu, and published by XSeed Games, Heroland opens for business on the 31st January, for Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC. Gameplay What sets Heroland apart is how its battles are fought. Simply put, you don't fight, that's all down to the guests. As a tour guide, it's your role to give advice during a battle. If you think one guest should use a certain...

Decay of Logos Review – Decay Of Dreams

Decay of Logos. From the title, I thought this was going to be another one of those logo/company guessing games however I was relieved to actually find a rather cool looking third-person RPG game.  Developed by Amplify Creations and published in partnership with Rising Star Games, Decay of Logos has been on a journey since early conception by game designer and programmer Andre Constantino in 2014.  Playing as a young girl named Ada you explore the fantasy world with your mystical Elk as you seek revenge on the culprits behind your village being destroyed.  All is, however, not what it seems. Gameplay Yes, everything isn't at all as it seems!  I will confess, I have held back on writing this review for a little while.  I wanted the devs to address issues that other gamers have picked up o...

Star Ocean First Departure R Review – Set Course for Adventure, Engage!

In July of 1996, Enix published a JRPG on the Super Famicom called Star Ocean. Star Ocean was pretty revolutionary, as it used the Super Famicom sound chip to give voices to some of the characters. This hadn't been done before on home consoles, and certainly not in a JRPG. Fast forward to 2007, and Star Ocean: First Departure launches on the Playstation Portable, developed by TOSE and published by Square Enix.  The game's producer, Yoshinori Yamagishi, wanted the remake to feel like a whole new game. It pretty much was, as it was the first time the original Star Ocean game was available outside Japan. Now, as 2019 draws to a close, Star Ocean First Departure R is being released on the Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch. On December 5th, we will get to experience the game that launched a fra...

Shenmue 3 – A Classic Franchise, Kickstarted Back To Life

18 Years after we left Ryo in the middle of his journey of revenge for his Father’s murder, we finally have the next entry into the saga with Shenmue 3! Developed by the YS Net team after a successful Kickstarter campaign, Shenmue 3 is very much intended to be a game for the fans, funded by the fans. In the hopes to finally give us an ending to this adventure. Before we get into the review, I would like to take this time to thank Koch Media for sending me the goodies included in the collectors edition along with the game, I can confirm that the LightBox looks amazing and the Dragon / Phoenix Mirrors will be kept safe from those who wish to use them for evil purposes. The question is, does Shenmue 3 live up to almost 20 years of anticipation and hype? Does a game franchise from 20 ...

The Walking Zombie 2 Review – Post-Apocalypse Polygon Fun…Kind Of

The Walking Zombie 2 turns zombie survival exploits into modern polygon-based storytelling in a shooter game that’s enriched with RPG aspects throughout. Developed and published by Czech Republic-based Alda Games, Walking Zombie 2 positions itself as a solid PC follow up to it’s Android predecessor The Walking Zombie: Dead City. In The Walking Zombie 2, you have the power to save the world...plus the power to be a bit of dick whilst doing so, if you want to. The choices are yours. Gameplay The Walking Zombie 2 is a single-player first-person survival shooter where, unsurprisingly, your main enemies are the world’s hordes of undead zombies. There’s plenty of satisfying combat action interspersed with a range of somewhat less satisfying cutscenes and dialogue encounters with other NPCs. Yo...

Disco Elysium Review – Drink, Drugs nd Murder

Disco Elysium is an open-world RPG developed and published by London-based Estonian studio ZA/UM and was released for PC via Steam on October 15, 2019.  Disco Elysium has been having rave reviews since its release, with the likes of PC Gamer calling it - “An irresponsibly deep detective RPG that lets you be any kind of detective you want. Even a bad one” - 92/100. Let's jump on in. Gameplay Disco Elysium is set in a fictional city of Revachol and is plagued by crime and poverty.  Here you take the role of a detective who starts his day waking up from a horrendous hangover after a night fueled by alcohol & drugs. You discover that you have no memory of who you are, where you are, even what you do for a living and it takes a bit of time after leaving your hostel room and after talking ...

Argonus and the Gods of Stone Review – Divine Intervention or a Greek Tragedy?

Zojoi bring us Argonus and the Gods of Stone, a chance to delve back into the past of ancient Greece, well maybe the films of the 70s and 80s about it. Time to get all nostalgic and maybe find a golden fleece, a mirrored shield or sever the head of a gorgon. Loincloth on, shield raised and sword as sharp as health and safety will allow. Gameplay Argonus and the Gods of Stone is a traditional first-person adventure. Those familiar with Greek Mythology will be quick to pick up on the use of the word Argo, so it is assumed that Argonus is going to be related to the great ship in some way or at least the Argonauts. So let's get the game started with a few clichés:- Shipwreck? - check Stranded on an island? - check Visited by a God? - check No idea what you have to do? - che...

Call of Cthulhu Review – Intriguing To The End

Call of Cthulhu is a role-playing survival horror game developed by Cyanide and published by Focus Home Interactive. Call of Cthulhu is inspired by H. P. Lovecraft's short story "The Call of Cthulhu" and an adaptation of the 1981 role-playing game of the same title. The game was released on 30 October 2018 on PC, Xbox & PS4, and was recently released on the Nintendo Switch on the 8th October 2019. Call of Cthulhu had fairly good reviews when it was originally released in 2018, "8.6/10 from IGN", "59% from PC Gamer" & "67% from Metacritic", but even though I didn’t originally play the game and as a lover of horror/psychological thriller genre, I was very interested in seeing how it would fare on the Nintendo Switch. Gameplay The plot of Call of Cthulhu starts off in 1924, w...
