Trover Saves the Universe Review – Surreal Space Odyssey

If you’re familiar with Rick and Morty, Accounting or anything else by the extremely talented Justin Roiland, then you know exactly what to expect from Trover Saves the Universe: a crazy nonsensical adventure.  As soon as the game starts, a giant Abstainer named Glorkon steals your puppies and inserts them into his eyeballs in order to destroy the universe. As a result of this, you befriend Trover, and together you have the task of hunting down the psychopath in order to save the universe and more importantly, your puppies. From that paragraph alone, you should know whether or not this is the type of game for you. At the forefront of the game is the humour. Trover and the range of bizarre secondary characters’ ad libbing will keep you laughing, chuckling and sniggering through...

Arise: A Simple Story – Beautiful, Breathtaking and Brilliant

There is a long running debate about games being art. This conversation peaks when pinnacle games are released and then squashed when monetising trash plagues our systems. However, Arise: A Simple Story, a puzzle adventure developed by Piccolo, is the newest and one of the strongest arguments for the medium being a true art form. Gameplay Arise: A Simple Story tells a beautiful yet emotional story that follows the life of the protagonist. Each chapter is a prominent point in the old man's life and this help build a connection with the character. Due to this, you find yourself immersed in the cleverly told and relatable narrative. The game's chapter designs acts as a visual metaphor to tell the narrative, which is refreshing to see and experience. Piccolo clearly treats the gamer with...

Flotsam – A Game Of Trash Which Is A Genuine Treasure

Introduction Bravo, Pajama Llama Games, Bravo. While I’ve never been a big fan of city-builder games before. Flotsam really flipped my skepticism on its head by downscaling this to more of a town-builder. After spotting this game for the first time at EGX 2019. I have been keen to get my hands on it and give it a go for myself. Flotsam is already well-known in the Indie gaming scene. It has picked up both the Most Promising Belgian Game at the Belgian Game Awards and Best Unity Game at Gamescom in 2019. And I can see why. Let me explain what Flotsam is all about. You’re in control of building a town from the remnants of cast-off junk thrown into the sea in a post-apocalyptic world, and you’re responsible for the wellbeing of its inhabitants: the ‘Drifters’. With needs such as health, h...

Gameplay Mechanic Miner lets you construct any type of machine which spans from a simple water-powered box to an armoured tank, to a submarine or something that you just decided to come up with one day. Its a fairly open sandbox of tools which you can create some wacky designs. There are 3 games mode; Story, Survival and Creative. Story This is a MUST before you start any other modes in M...

Nanotale: Typing Chronicles Preview – Casting The Spell

Introduction Early access title Nanotale: Typing Chronicles developed by Fishing Cactus and published by Fishing Cactus, Plug In Digital and 2P Games.  Currently available on steam, Nanotale is the new adventure from the Typing Chronicles franchise and spiritual successor to Epistory. In a nutshell, it’s a dungeon crawl style RPG game that you can play purely with the keyboard.  Replace frantically clicking your mouse button with desperately trying to accurately and quickly type words from fox, to flammable to cynicism.  Think Mavis Beacon teaches typing, whilst casting spells to ward off hoards of enemies, it’s frustratingly fun! Nanotale: Typing Chronicles is an Early Access title, so expect the usual teething issues and bugs.  However, the developers are constantly releasing fixe...

Headspun Review – Putting Together The Pieces

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to help piece someone's memory back together whilst enjoying mini-games and tasks? Then read on. But first, let us get inside the head of Jamin the Director and Developer at Superstring Ltd who developed Headspun. Let's talk about Superstring, can you tell us how it came about? In my day job, I work as Global Brand Manager at Square Enix, but I’ve always had all these design ideas and creative energies I need to release somewhere outside of work. I’ve tinkered with various game projects over the years, but Headspun was the first game I could envisage a commercial release for, and so – in late 2017 - I spun up Superstring to be the vehicle to carry it.   What are your aspirations for Superstring? My whole thing with Superstring ...

Yooka-Laylee And The Impossible Lair Review – Mission Improbable

Let's take a minute to talk about Playtonic Games. Made up of some of the key creative talents that brought us Donkey Kong Country on the SNES, Playtonic Games was founded in 2014. Straight out of the gate, they set out to make a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie for the Nintendo 64. Dubbed "Project Ukelele" the team launched a Kickstarter and reached their stretch goal within 24 hours. While I loved what finally came out as Yooka-Laylee, it was met with mixed critical reviews. , Playtonic Games released a trailer for their next game Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair and what I saw was precisely what I wanted to see in a platformer. Needless to say, I was incredibly excited to give this a shot, so let's jump in and see just how impossible this lair is. Gameplay Yooka-Laylee and the...

A Knight’s Quest Review – The Legend of Rusty: The Wind Breaker

Remember the good old days playing PS2 era platformers? No? Well, don’t let that put you off as A Knight’s Quest is a fun 3D action adventure game developed by Sky9. Now it’s plain to see that the game wears its influence on its tunic. You don’t need to be Impa to see that Sky9 are obviously fans of the Zelda series and have used that to help build a world and game influenced by the franchise. As you’d expect, you explore Regalia, a beautifully crafted world, collecting elemental weapons and magical powers from three Spirit Knights in order to bring peace to the world. Gameplay The game features many elements that you’d expect in an adventure game: puzzles, platforming, exploration and sub-par combat. Although these are conventions of the genre, they are still extremely fun. The p...

Deliver Us The Moon Review- Zero Gravity, Maximum Seriousness

KeokeN Interactive bring us the moon, well actually I kind of have to deliver it myself. Nothing is going to be easy in this game. Oxygen is in short supply and it's up to me to reboot the broken moon's supply to save the world. Fortunately I work well under pressure, so smoke me a kipper I'll be home before breakfast. Space suit on, dried food rations at the ready and a desire to save all humans already in built. Lets blow this joint.  Gameplay Deliver us the Moon goes with the standard WASD format to move around, well I say standard, once I got into space it took a little longer to get used to it as zero gravity can be a bit tricky. I found a few items that helped me get around the space station, there has been quite a bit of damage and power would be useful. Missions are presented...
