Space Pirates And Zombies 2 – A Moonlight Review

Space Pirates And Zombies 2 was an interesting title to come my way. It is developed and published by MinMax Games Ltd.  I have never heard of the previous SPAZ (Space Pirates and Zombies) but immediately started to love this one. From the whacky cast of characters that I have come to love, and hearing them talking about the meaning of insanity, making a blatant and funny Far Cry joke. It kept me playing for hours at a time. Gameplay The gameplay is very fun with some minor learning curves.  This is something I have come to expect after playing games like Rebel Galaxy. Space games seem to always have a learning curve to them, this game being no different.  You start the game off in a “janky” mother ship, tasked with fixing her up with better parts. The tutorial section of the game is int...

Call Of Duty: World War II Campaign Review – Brutality At It’s Most Beautiful

So usually you get a review of a game as a whole over here at Thumb Culture, but with Call of Duty: World War II we are going to do things a little different. This latest installment of the franchise (the 14th main release for all you number hounds) see's Sledgehammer Games take on World War II. WWII hasn't been tackled in the franchise since World at War back in 2008. Because this is such a high profile game we couldn't give it a score for the game as a whole, so we are splitting it into three separate reviews, Campaign, Zombies, and Multiplayer. So sit back and relax as we dive into the Campaign with as little spoilers as possible. Ladies and Gentleman, Call of Duty: World War II. Gameplay So as with any Call of Duty game, World War II is no different. Its a heard pounding ride ...

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus Review – Controversially Beautiful

So recently we received a copy of Bethesda Softworks and MachineGames' Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus through the post, and with all the recent controversy surrounding the game I was eager to get the game loaded up and start playing through. So in went the disc replacing my copy of Dying Light and as per usual, a day one patch was required. Coffee Time. Eventually after it had finished downloading and the proverbial mice had run in their wheel for long enough, I started the game up. What came next was a mixture of joyous applause as well as hiding behind a cushion cringiness. Want to know why? Of course you do! Gameplay Loading up Wolfenstein II and deciding which difficulty setting to play the game on was the first hurdle that I came against. Do I opt for the harder than granite...

Dreamworks Voltron VR Chronicles Review – Bot Bot Bot

As an 80s kid I have very fond memories of Voltron. It was among many cartoons I used to watch religiously. So when I heard a VR game had been created, I jumped at the chance to check it out. (Yes, I know it’s technically based on the Dreamworks remake that I haven’t seen, but... IT’S VOLTRON!!) For those of you not familiar with Voltron, the basis of the storyline is that five teenagers are transported from Earth to become the last line of defence for the galaxy in an intergalactic battle against the evil alien force led by Lord Zarkon. Voltron VR Chronicles has been created by Digital Domain and gives us the opportunity to ‘become a Paladin’ and experience a unique story created exclusively for VR. At a price point of $15 (UK Price still TBA), I started this game hoping to be engaged ...

Project Nimbus Review – Sky Wars With Flying Mechs

Okay, no, let’s get this ironed out right away, Project Nimbus isn’t a game based on the Nimbus 2000 from Harry Potter. What it is however, is an intense, action packed, airborne mech shooter that’s bound to get you nose-to-screen, and teeth grinding. Project Nimbus has recently just flown its way out of Early Access on the 26th of September 2017, and is being developed by GameCrafterTeam, a development team of four, and an additional two composers. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic Earth in which the player controls mechs, otherwise known in-game as, “BattleFrames”. These giant suits are equipped with missiles and automatic weapons, powerful jets to enable them to fly, and heavily armoured for intense sky battles. Each BattleFrame pilot have their own styles of fighting, and while the gam...

Vostok Inc Review – A Plunder Through Space And Time

Nosebleed Interactive bring us their second offering, Vostok Inc. Build and destroy seem to be the main themes, build your empire and destroy your enemies. Seems fairly simple, but have the small independent company landed on the right planets? Time to fire up those boosters and blast into some space action. Gameplay Vostok Inc is essentially a twin stick spaceship shooter, however it's not only a twin stick shooter. Vostok Inc is the company you work for, and companies like to make money. Vostok Inc are no exception. You get a basic introduction to gameplay, move this stick to move, and this one to shoot, press this button to boost etc... Warm those thumbs up, you're gonna need them. The premise of the game is to get rich, you get moolah from shooting enemies and asteroids, so get s...

Ruiner Review – Cyberpunk Bloodbath

Ruiner is a Cyberpunk anime stylised top-down action shooter. It's the debut release from Reikon Games and produced by Devolver Digital. Before we delve too deeply into the world of Ruiner, as its Reikon Games' debut, I just wanted to give you a little info into their background. Reikon is a studio based in Warsaw that was founded in 2014. Four veteran game designers who have such titles as The Witcher Series, Dying Light and Shadow Warrior to their name. With that level of experience and knowledge, I'm pretty excited to see what they have given us in their first Indi release. Ruiner is very much a story driven game set in the year 2091 in a Metropolis known as Rengkok. You take on the role of a somewhat augmented man/machine sociopath hybrid who goes on a brutal vendetta after a voice ...

Plague Road Review – Fear The Reaper?

Plague Road, by game development studio Arcade Distillery, is the result of what happens when a kickstarter campaign successfully reaches out for backers, well 1119 backers to be accurate.  Requiring a $30,000 goal, the support shown for the project almost doubled the target with $55,734 raised. So what is Plague Road all about I here you cry? With a name like that it sure isn't going to be about fluffy bunnies and happy times.  Plague Road is a combination of a sideways adventure scroller with turn based tactical battles that sees you playing a lone doctor who is travelling through a land that has been ravished by a plague.  The quest? to search for survivors following the outbreak across a series of regions having left the relative safety of your farm.  As the story unfolds you learn ...

Prey Review – A Delayed Perspective

Developed by Arkane Studios, also known for Dishonored, and published by Bethesda, Prey was released back on May 5th 2017. Everything goes to hell when the ship becomes overrun with the Typhon and you must venture forth to address the problem. The narrative is set in an alternate future, open world environment, which allows you to forge your own path. The game is more like a spiritual successor to 1994’s Syste...

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Review – You Did It Again Naughty Dog

The Uncharted series has been one of Naughty Dog’s finest creations, commercially and critically, without a shadow of a doubt; although I have to give a huge shout out to The Last of Us being on par as well. So after four main games with the brilliant Nathan Drake, one of Playstation’s finest developing partners has decided to expand the series with a new, shorter than normal entry in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Only this time, here come the girls. So is it any good? You bet your arse it is. Gameplay Nathan who? With “what’s his name” out of the picture, focus shifts to long-time supporting character Chloe Frazer, voiced by Claudia Black with her trademark wicked purr, who we join in the middle of the hunt for the Tusk of Ganesh in a war-torn region of India. In a nice touch for us fans ...
