Katana ZERO – Hotline New Mecca

Katana ZERO is a hyper-violent fast-paced side-scrolling action platformer developed by Askiisoft and published by Devolver Digital.  It is being released on Windows and MacOSX via Steam in March 2019. Originally shown off back in 2015, It has been met with mixed opinions ranging from excitement to rolled eyes. Some have said that they considered it TOO stylish, whereas others have praised it as an immensely impressive offering from the small studio Askiisoft. This preview is based on an early release version of the game.   Gameplay Katana ZERO is a single player neo-noir action platformer featuring fast-paced combat and instant death, similar to Hotline Miami. In Katana ZERO you play as a Samurai in a cyberpunk styled city. You set out on missions using his ability to se...

Warhammer 40,000 Inquisitor Martyr Review – Bloodfest

Warhammer has always been a piece of my life.  I remember the early days of playing D&D style adventures during lunch breaks at school that culminated in epic battles using carefully painted figurines that spread across a battlefield of huge proportions in the common room.  The Warhammer club was in full swing! The Warhammer universe has made steady progression across digital platforms for many years and Neocore's latest offering, Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr finally hit consoles in Summer.  For the sake of this article I am going to refer to the game simply as Martyr from now on. Are you ready to purge the unclean and protect the Imperium from corruption?  Lets get on with it! Gameplay In a first for the Warhammer 40K Universe, Martyr is branded as an open-world s...

Moonlighter Review – Like Indiana Jones owned a shop.

Introduction Moonlighter is hard. There I said it. Don’t let the cute graphics, simple gameplay and cartoon violence lull you into a false sense of security. It is a real challenge to make any real progress and you will die a lot playing this game. Moonlighter is a rogue-lite, action RPG where you play as Will, a brave shopkeeper who dreams of being a hero. Published by 11bit studios and created by Digital Sun the game has two very distinct sides to it. You are both a beast slaying, sword swinging adventurer and a timid shopkeeper with dreams of becoming a hero, but it all makes sense when you play the game. The game is available on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Gameplay During an archaeological excavation some gates which lead to different realms and dimensions were found on the outs...

Operation Warcade: War, what is it good for? PSVR apparently!

Back in the mists of time (well the 1980's) before the arrival of the home computer the only place to play the latest video games was the local arcade. Developers Ivanovich Games have attempted to recapture this nostaligia with Operation Warcade. Following a successful debut on Occulus and Vive, Perp Games have now published Operation Warcade on PSVR. Those of us of a certain age will remember the arcade classic Operation Wolf and it is very obvious that Operation Warcade is a homage to this classic shoot em up. From the virtual UZI 9mm submachine gun to the 80's style arcade graphics the game is a love letter to the arcade games of our youth. So nostalgia aside is Operation Warcade worth your virtual quarters? Gameplay You start the game in the aforementioned virtual 80's arcade sta...

X-Morph Defense: European Assault DLC Review – Times Up!

X-Morph Defense by Polish based EXOR studios, who are responsible for the title Zombie Driver, is a tower defence game crossed with a top down shooter where (plot twist) you get to destroy planet Earth.  Available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, X-Morph Defense has been in development since 2013 and unlike many games that use the Unreal engine, EXOR have created their own called Schmetterling which when translated isn't an alcoholic beverage for an elf but infact means "butterfly". Taking to the PS4 controller I was intrigued to see how this twin stick hybrid concoction would turn out! Gameplay The opening visuals are pretty cool as your alien race decide upon which planet in the universe is best suited for their needs.  Through a robotic sequence of events, Earth gets chosen and the har...

The Witch and the Hundred Knight 2 Review – B*Witched, B*Killing, B*Happy

Nippon Ichi Software bring us The Witch and the Hundred Knight 2, the sequel to this original release in 2013.  The big question is 'Have they managed to sway the indifference that met the first release?' Well I guess it's time to polish my armour, after all, after 100 years it's going to need a little TLC. Gameplay The Witch and the Hundred Knight 2 tells the story of 2 sisters, Amelie and Milm. Amelie is a headstrong young girl who wants to protect her younger sister, and Milm has been possessed by an evil witch called Ckelka. You get to be the Hundred Knight and kill lots of things for them both, well all three of them if you are going to be picky. The learning curve on this game is very shallow, and anyone who has read my previous reviews will know that I am now in my element. Mo...

The American Dream PSVR Review – Guns for Everyone!

Who here is a fan of Gun Control? We all know how our friends across the pond feel about their 2nd Amendment and the right to bear arms. The American Dream allows us average Non US Citizens to peek into how wonderful their lives are because of it. The American Dream is the latest release from Samurai Punk (an awesome name if I do say so myself!) and is a Rail style FPS with a twist, taking the idea of Guns being a tool in the home and then replacing every other tool in the home with a type of gun as though it was completely normal (even the cutlery!). The big question now… Is The American Dream a Crack shot title, or firing wide of the mark? Let’s find out… Gameplay It’s pretty hard to spoil any story points in The American Dream as is the case with most rail shooters in my experience...

Knockout League Review – Ready 2 Rumble Meets VR

Knockout League by Grab games is colourful, fun to play and definitely works up a sweat. So how is the game as a PSVR release? Lets find out! Gameplay Knockout League is a blast to play. In its simplicity you are a body-less entity that comes up against a number of different opponents through the career mode. These opponents are a variety of larger than life characters whose sole purpose is to take you down! Controlling your character is a dream, essentially the move controllers imitate your boxing gloves, with 1 to 1 movement you are able to dodgy incoming shots from your opponents and strike back when the opportunity arises. So back to those characters, they are varied from a traditional boxing physique, through to an Octopus....AN OCTOPUS. How are you meant to beat something...

Time Carnage Review – Shooter With Attitude

What do a zombie, a velociraptor and a laser firing robot have in common? You are going to kill them all in Wales Interactive’s wave shooter with attitude – Time Carnage Coming out this week on PSVR, Oculus and Vive Time Carnage is a frantic wave shooter which specialises in its variety of weapons and change of locations. Wave Shooters are common on VR systems. As a game environment VR struggles to simulate natural movement and as we have seen in recent games like Bravo Team, failing to get a movement system right can damn your title’s chances of success and have it heading to the bargain shelf of your local CEX store quicker than a Kevin Spacey movie. https://youtu.be/srRwWOz25M4 Gameplay So if you can’t do movement well, create a game where you don’t need to move. Although there ...
