Peace, Love and Revelade
Gameplay
Placing you in the footsteps of Cryptosporidium (Crypto) who is having fun in the 60’s. The KGB who see the Furons as a huge threat launch a nuke at the mothership destroying it. Crypto’s mission office, Pox, managed to transfer his consciousness into a holographic projector. .
Crypto is a menace that the Soviets are willing to do anything to eradicate in Bay City. Crypto is the first of his kind to have genitalia which he refers to as “The Package”. Our horny little alien is full of quips throughout the game which provides the games humour as he interacts with others. I am glad that developer Black Forest Games chose to stay true to the original and keep it as close to the original title. One side mission has been removed, involving Crypto helping someone change their sex. I believe it is a positive step towards increasing awareness of the LGBTQ community, even though no comment has been made regarding its removal.
Missions
In 1969, the Soviet Union created the soft drink Revelade. The drink destroys Furon DNA from human brainstems by rotting it away. Among the hippies in Bay City, the soft drink is widely distributed. Fighting back against Crypto see’s the Soviet Union make the decision to dump a huge amount into the Bay, to affect the water supplies. Following the foiled plot, the Soviet-trained hippie commune leader Coyote Bongwater hires blimps to carry Revelade into the atmosphere.
Body snatching is a method Crypto uses to take over the body of a host and hide in their disguise. Use this ability with caution, if seen witnesses will flee and police will be summoned.
The Cult Of Arkvoodle
Crypto discovers that he is part of a prophecy as the son of the Furon god. To gain access to his saucer Crypto has to firstly worship the statues. Once this has been unlocked, the word of Arkvoodle needs to be spread, Crypto enlists the help of hippie guru Sharma Larma allowing him to manage the cult.
As the cult grows it attracts attention of the police, government moles the KGB and even the infamous black ninja’s all wanting to stop you. The responsibilities of managing the cult eventually becomes too overwhelming for Sharma Larma who has proclaimed himself as the face of Arkvoodle. Crypto soon decides that he has outlived his usefulness.
Graphics & Audio
Beautiful locations that are all unique ranging from the lovely Bay City to the Moon. The improvements are obvious to see as the details look spot on. The move to Unreal Engine 4 has given the art department full ability to make the game closer to what they envisaged originally. The Playstation 5 handles these perfectly and including fast loading times, makes it a joy to play.
It can be seen that the background flickers and that the rendering is noticeably slow. Although I hoped this would be fixed with the Day 1 patch, it is being worked on still.
The audio within the game is brilliant, and one of the collectables adds to the soundtrack. Collecting LPs means you can play any of the soundtrack songs anytime you want to.
Longevity
Destroy All Humans 2 – Reprobed campaign lasts around 12 hours, if you are aiming for the platinum trophy you will be looking for 17 hours. My time with DAH2 was very enjoyable. It was definitely a title I was looking forward to when it was announced.
Final Thoughts
The remake of the original achieved a lot of positive reviews. Destroy All Humans 2 – Reprobed, sadly suffers from a number of remakes being released. I believe these should be judged individually and not review bombed on sites without experiencing the game.
I contacted THQ Nordic regarding the problem with rendering within cut scenes, and it is being worked on so expect a patch in the not too distant future. This was the only aspect of the game that for me was a negative. Destroy All Humans 2 was the last game that was featured on the PlayStation so this may mark the last outing for Crypto unless a new title is created.
The characters, and the inuendo’s within provide the comic value. This is alongside a really good and enjoyable adventure and for this reason I award Destroy All Humans 2 – Reprobed the Thumb Culture Gold Award
