Read Time:5 Minute, 5 Second

Ravenswatch is a top-down roguelike action game in which you play as heroes of tales and legends that must slay hordes of nightmarish creatures. Ravenswatch was developed by Passtech Games and published by Nacon. You may recognise Passtech Games as they have made their mark with Ravenswatches‘ predecessor Curse of the Dead Gods. Another fantastic roguelike game. They have now returned with even more ideas and creativity! Now you can jump into Ravenswatch where you can play as 9 heroes, each with a unique twist and individual gameplay.

The premise? The Nightmare has invaded the world of dreams and is corrupting everything in its wake. Faced with this evil, the Ravenswatch is gathering heroes from tales and legends from all over the world to lead a crucial battle and restore the fragile balance. Everything else is up to you!

Ravenswatch is now out in 1.0 on all major consoles like PlayStation and Xbox as well as Steam!

Gameplay

Ravenswatch has you try to defeat the Nightmare and reach the final chapter, you will spend your time creating a strong build and maintaining great coordinated teamwork. You have 3 days and 3 nights to increase your power. Face the chapter boss when you feel ready or until you get pulled into the nightmare itself.

In the purest tradition of the roguelike genre previously as seen in games like Hades or Passtech Games previous title Curse of The Dead Gods, Ravenswatch is a challenging game but at most times fair, balanced and refined to the best of it’s abilities.

During your game, optimize your time and make the best use of the upgrades you earn to defeat the plentiful monsters along the way. With each new run, explore a new map filled with activities, enemies and awards to gather. Unlock new heroes and new content from one run to the next. Unlock more and more lore the more you progress. The control scheme is similar to those seen in a standard roguelike but of course, all characters have their own abilities that work in different ways. Some close quarters like Beowulf, and some long distances like the Pied Piper, all bring different abilities to the table with more skills to master. You also get the chance to come back to life a few times to keep going on your run using Raven feathers, just in case you thought one silly death was enough for a game over!

Single-player vs Co-Op

Ravenswatch offers matchmaking, friend invite or solo experience. In my time of playing, I will say playing solo was quite the challenge,  it is absolutely doable but hearing the interactions between the characters brought another fun aspect to the game and playing single-player felt a little more bland in comparison. Personally, the game was much more fun with a friend to bring more havoc to enemies with even more explosions and abilities being used and being able to coordinate your attacks to boost damage was incredibly joyful. I can only imagine how much fun the game is with more than 2 players, guess it’s time to convince more of my friends to play!

I could watch the animations for the Pied Pipers song notes all day long.

Graphics & Audio

The art style of Ravenswatch is one of the many points the game shines, the gritty comic style used for the game brings a certain type of dark charm to the game and fits the title perfectly. All characters have their own looks and characteristics that make them unique. The colour palettes are picked really well to convey the nightmare among all of the maps. The background music is good, but the game really develops with the characters’ little quirks. Playing in Co-Op brought plenty of laugh-out-loud moments as characters threw shade at each other with sly little remarks as you worked your way through your run. A simple incentive for me was being able to hear Beowulf find yet another way to insult another character.

Longevity

Ravenswatch offers so much in terms of replayability, having played close to 10 hours of the game now there is so much to build in terms of your character. Finding out more lore or mastering your newly earned abilities and bonuses comes naturally to a roguelike like this. With Ravenswatch having way over 200 talents, 50 magical items and endless build combinations the fun literally does not stop. The maps are also randomly generated all with a wide range of activities to complete during your runs. 4 difficulty levels are also available, even with customized game modes for an even greater challenge for those difficulty maniacs like myself out there. Or just take your time and complete Ravenswatch at your own pace. This game definitely had me coming back for more.

I always feel awful picking Explosive Rats but it is my favourite damage ability!

Final Thoughts

Overall Ravenswatch has definitely scratched my recent overbearing itch for roguelikes. With a great cast of characters, amazingly crafted art and an addicting gameplay loop, it brings a fantastic roguelike experience. The little details really bring together a great game which made me come back time and time again, just one more run, I said for the next 5 runs. Whoops.

With everything taken into consideration, I will be granting Ravenswatch the Thumb Culture Platinum Award. What a fab little game! Really lived up to the hype after the previous roguelike by Passtech Games!
