Red Wings: Aces of the Sky Review – Do you wanna?

If you've been looking for a 3D dog-fighting title on the Switch your options to date have been pretty scant. Developer All In! Games aims to fill the void with their latest release, Red Wings: Aces of the Sky. Red Wings: Aces of the Sky takes place during the first world war, tracking the rise and fall of the legendary Polish pilot Manfred von Richthofen. You can take on the role of a pilot in the Triple Entente (Britain, France and Russia) or the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy), with each campaign consisting of 25 missions.  Much of the game involves soaring through the skies in famous planes of the past, taking out opposing pilots and observation balloons. But does it hit the target or is it a bit of a plane-crash? Gameplay First off, Red Wings: Aces of the Sk...

Megabyte Punch Review – Megacs RO-BATTLE!

I'm always up for checking out fun little indie games, especially when I get to play them on the Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch is a platform I have argued multiple times is the perfect place to play indie games. So when Megabyte Punch came across my desk, I got kind of excited to take a loot at it. Developed and published by Team Reptile for Steam and Nintendo Switch, Megabyte Punch released on the 8th of May, 2020. For the purpose of the following review, I'll be taking a look at the Nintendo Switch version of the game, So let's get down to business and see what's what with Megabyte Punch. Gameplay Take one part platformer, add a dash of a fighting game, and a pinch of Metroidvania style exploration and what you end up with is something fairly unique. Megabyte Punch is at its cor...

Pixel Ripped 1995 PSVR Review – Party Like It’s 1995!

For many of us, the 90s were the best times of our lives. I remember the excitement of receiving a new game for Christmas and playing it endlessly. Voices in the background slowly morphed into white noise as I was transfixed on the adventure at hand. Pixel Ripped 1995, a sequel to Pixel Ripped 1989, successful recreates that feeling in one of the best PSVR games currently available. You take the role of Dot, a brave heroine, who needs to stop the evil Cyblin Lord who plans take over the digital and real-world! In order to succeed, you take over the body of the world’s greatest gamer...Dave. Together, can you save both worlds? The developers, Arvore, have another, more poignant narrative running through the game. Not only does Dave have to save the world but he also has a complex life...

Saints Row IV Re-Elected Review – The Resurrection of a Saint?

The Saints Row series of games have a relatively illustrious history, first launching in 2008 as a respectable take on Grand Theft Auto, before spawning a number of sequels which got progressively more wacky. Unfortunately, my mum wouldn't let me play violent games back in those days (I only got to play Bomberman when I moved out of the family home at 25), so I never got to experience the franchise on release. As such, when the chance came up to review Saints Row IV Re-Elected on the Switch, I jumped at it.  I'm actually the perfect person to review this game, I reckon, as I've no previous experience of Saints Row games, and suspect this may be the same position that a lot of gamers who are considering Saints Row IV Re-Elected's purchase on the Switch may hold as well. You can, therefore,...

The Eternal Castle [REMASTERED] – Flashback to Another World

The Eternal Castle [REMASTERED] claims to be a remake of a lost 1987 title but don't be fooled. This is not a remaster but rather a reinterpretation of adventure games of the 80s. Those of us who remember classics such as Another World, Flashback and Prince of Persia will instantly be aware of what the title will entail.  However, does the genre need to be resurrected and will the mechanics work with modern audiences? Gameplay You are a pilot that has crashed onto a strange world. In order to escape, you need to gather parts to fix your ship. Each part is located in three distinct and uniquely designed worlds. Not only are they visually different, but the gameplay mechanics also alter on each making each area feel distinct. Whether you are mowing down enemies, sneaking past creatures...

Moons Of Madness Review – Exploring The Depths Of Darkness

Welcome to life on Mars, or at least, something like it. Moons Of Madness, developed by Rock Pocket Games and published by Funcom, is a first-person sci-fi psychological horror adventure that’s packed with jump scares and puzzle-based problems. A deeply unsettling combination in more ways than one. As Shane Newehart, an engineer based on the Trailblazer Alpha Mars research station, you’re given a first-person insight into your character’s struggle with his sanity amid increasingly strange and frightening situations on the red planet.  The opening sequences of Moons Of Madness make it clear that this is no ordinary space exploration game. Right from the off, you’re thrust into a truly dysfunctional scenario in the form of one of Shane’s nightmares. Claustrophobically dark space stat...

Exit the Gungeon Review – Exit, Strategy

Enter the Gungeon released on Nintendo Switch back in late 2017. For the uninitiated, Enter the Gungeon was a rogue-lite with more guns than you can shake a broomstick at, and it hooked me immediately with its fast-paced, bullet-hell action and wild boss design. The story, such as it was, revolved around four characters entering a towering structure called The Gungeon, which was populated by sentient, aggressive bullets. They had each heard the legend of a revolver which could kill the past and wipe out mistakes. Weapons ranged from bog-standard shotguns to screen-dominating lasers. And that's not all, we're talking egg-firing grenade launchers, a guitar which launched wild solos as you hold down the trigger... even a t-shirt cannon. Exit the Gungeon picks up after each character achiev...

Brought back to us by Aspyr, the online multiplayer classic comes to Nintendo Switch with modernized controls. Take on the role of a new student eager to learn the ways of the Force from Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. You can pick it up here, but first, read on to find out if you should. Shinsekai: Into the Depths Review – Going Deeper Underground

Shinsekai: Into the Depths is a deep dive into an expansive underwater world. Beginning life as an Apple Arcade exclusive, the Metroidvania, survival puzzler has tunnelled its way to the Nintendo Switch.  Full disclosure. Whenever I hear the words ‘mobile game’, I shudder. All I think of is shovelware trash, littered with microtransactions. Games that are not for real gamers. Yes, when it comes to my views on mobile games, I’m narrow-minded. In steps Capcom, a company who I adore and have arguably been the best developer in recent years. Could they finally pull my head out of my arse? In short, the answer is yes. Gameplay In Shinsekai: Into the Depths, you take control of a silent, nameless protagonist who has been forced to take refuge in the ocean due to the land above being cov...

Bloodroots Review – Roots Bloody Roots

The age-old argument about video games being too violent has plagued the industry I love for decades. Games have been branded with derogatory terms and parents have campaigned against the release of particularly controversial games. To counter this, gamers of all ages have argued that games don't glorify violence but rather use it as a tool to increase engagement and entertainment in the medium, similarly to the film industry. Gameplay Hotline Miami, Katana Zero and My Friend Pedro have helped to elevate the over the top action genre to new heights, and Paper Cult have recognised this and developed the formula with the bloody fantastic Bloodroots. An appealing element of the genre is the core gameplay loop and Bloodroots nails this. You are tasked with brutally annihilating all the e...
