Pure Pool Pro is the latest pool simulation game by Rockwater with publishing by Ripstone Ltd. (Poker ClubChess Infinity). Play through a generous number of modes, game types, and difficulties, with achievements and customizations to unlock. It is now available on PC via Steam or Epic, as well as for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Table I Have, Pro I Am Not

Growing up, I always made sure to bring a dime to the YMCA. For this was the cost to “rent” the set of balls and cues for the pool tables. I only recall knowing to pocket the colour balls opposite of your opponent. Since then I’ve picked up on a few more rules and a table with my current house too. I thought Pure Pool Pro could maybe teach me a thing or two more. I will admit that I had to look up the difference between pool, billiards, and snooker just so I didn’t mistakenly call one the other. Check out my thoughts on this pool simulator game below.

Sleek overviews are nice but a wider camera down on the cue ball would be cool too.

Gameplay

Pure Pool Pro is a pool simulator with an assortment of game modes and features. These include free play, local and online play, daily challenges, various rule sets and skill games, and a career mode that combines the different games into progressive paths. Each of the career paths also has different difficulty levels for more variety of play.

I honestly can’t say if it was the last, but I know for sure that the fist computer pool game for me was via Yahoo! Games. Online and in the web browser; click-and drag-sticks on the screen. Pure Pool Pro drives that gameplay to modern levels. The base game mechanic is the same and the physics feel fairly realistic. My only criticism would be lack of the occasional wild variable during strikes.

There are a plethora of unlocks to customize your ball set, cue stick, player card, etc. The set in the screen shot below can be earned through the amateur career track. Pure Pool Pro also has medals, called crests, that you earn through various streaks and achievements. If you’re a completionist, there’s a decent amount to collect.

One of the first few unlocks is this slick metallic ball set. Shiny!

Graphics & Audio

I’m playing Pure Pool Pro on my PC. Default video settings seem to be suitable enough and I did not go looking to change anything. The game models are slick and look detailed and modern. I do point out, though, that despite the focus of the game being on the table, the background of the different zones could be a bit less vacant. The game-winning animation of the cue stick striking the cue ball is both too telling and repetitive as well.

I honestly love the audio track in Pure Pool Pro. The instrumental music is very chill and most tracks feel unique from one another. I especially enjoy the random jazz saxophone when lining up a shot. The track names and artist also show up on the screen as they change like a jukebox.

Longevity

Pure Pool Pro offers a number of different game modes and paths for completion. As someone that doesn’t take the sport too seriously in real life or digital format, it has more than enough content to give me a decent amount of hours worth. One could argue that the content is too easy, but for me that just means an easier completion.

Final Thoughts

For someone that hasn’t played any sort of pool game in forever, Pure Pool Pro is a simple game to learn and play. It offers a variety of game types and modes, as well as difficulties and cosmetics customizations to unlock. Despite lack of a more apparent chance at failure for precisely-lined shots, and a game world the could feel a bit more complete, it is very deserving of the Thumb Culture Gold Award.
