Being a gamer means any themed gaming accessory is an automatic buy. Especially when it comes to Pokémon! And Pokémon Day gives us the perfect excuse to do just that, not that we need one! We recently reviewed the Fortnite version of the PowerA OPS V1 controller and now it’s the turn of the PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller. Not just any the PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller either, but the Charizard Firestorm edition!

I choose you!

There is no doubt, with these aesthetics PowerA power up this year’s Pokémon Day. And with the Pokémon Presents Live Stream going live later, who knows we may just get that much anticipated news about Pokémon Legends: Z-A. And what better way to play a new Pokémon game than with a new Pokémon controller?  Without further ado, lets check it out.

Design

The PowerA Charizard Storm Enhanced Wired Controller design artwork is incredible. But then as an officially licensed product you would expect no less. This very cool Charizard artwork does slightly make up for the fact that this controller feels it’s price. It’s not weighty, coming in at just 131 grams. Which is great for kids, in fact Middle of the TC mini crew had claimed the controller as his own within minutes of me sitting down to test it out. Along with being very lightweight, the controller itself is actually quite small too. With a length of 15.3cm, 11.2cm wide and 6.3cm tall. Again a real plus if you’re buying this for your younger Pokémon fan.

What I think is great is that PowerA also gives you a 2-year warranty, always handy to know!

Features

For the price point this is a good little controller with limited but useful features. The buttons are responsive. You can plug your headset into the 3.5mm audio jack to talk with friends or for the betterment of your game immersion. The thumbstick controls are smooth thanks to the embedded anti-friction rings around them. And I can’t forget to mention the two mappable buttons. These Advanced Gaming Buttons (as PowerA calls them) can be programmed in game by simply holding the program button on the back of the controller, waiting until the LED light flashes and then choosing what you wish to assign to that space. This then stays in the controller memory until you remap the controls.

Charmander got curious about the new controller…

The PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller does have it’s limits however. It does not support HD rumble, motion controls or amiibo figures. As you can imagine because of this, the controller is not suitable for joy-con only games such as Ring Fit Adventure. But why you would be attempting to play that with a controller I do not know!

Connectivity

PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller is, shockingly, a purely wired controller. Funny that! It does however have a detachable 10ft (approximately 3metres for the metric fans) USB cable. No faffing around trying to get the devices to pair. No need to run for batteries midgame. All you have to do is plug it in to your docked Nintendo Switch and away you go.

Final Thoughts

Available from the PowerA store for around £20, this controller won’t cost you the earth. It’s easy and accessible to use for kids and grown ups alike. It may not be the most robust controller but it looks great. Overall it’s a nice addition to any Pokémon fan’s set up. Whether that be a collection shelf or to play your favourite games with. If you are someone who likes to collect controllers featuring your favourite characters, there are so many other cute ones in the PowerA range too!

I give this controller three Poffins out of five. No. Sorry, that’s not right. Let’s try again…
