PowerA are a peripheral company that has grown in popularity over the years. Best known for their cheap alternatives to the official controllers on the market. With a number of brand collaborations including Super Mario, Pokemon and many many more. However, this review will concentrate on the PowerA OPS V1 Wireless Controller for Cloud Gaming – Fortnite Edition, to give it its full name.
Where are we dropping?
If you’ve never checked out the PowerA website I highly recommend that you do. There are so many great controllers on there, especially in the Fortnite range. Be careful though, they will take all of your money.
Design
The PowerA OPS V1 is an Xbox-style controller, with asymmetric thumbsticks and standard face buttons. It’s comfortable and extremely light at less than 300g. On the back of the controller, there are four mappable buttons, giving you the edge over your competition. Being able to keep your fingers on the thumbsticks is such a great advantage in the majority of games. You can even program these on the fly to get them working for whatever game you are playing.
Hall effect triggers and thumbsticks, allow you to be more precise with your inputs. You can even reduce the movement in those triggers so that you have more of a hair trigger. This is especially handy when playing games like Call of Duty to allow rapid firing of single-shot weapons.
Features
With a whole host of features included in the plastic shell, it’s always hard to know what to talk about first. We’ve already mentioned the mappable buttons and trigger adjustments. What we haven’t spoken about is the battery with a 550mAh rechargeable battery allowing you to get up to 20 hours of gameplay from a single charge.
With a turbo button that can activated against the ABXY, LB/RB or the Select/Start buttons. Giving you the ability to increase your input speed without the extra effort.
Connectivity
So the PowerA OPS V1 has 3 connection options. A brilliantly reliable low-latency 2.4GHz wireless connection, Bluetooth or you can use it Wired. Meaning the controller is flexible and versatile and can connect to a number of devices. Whether that’s your computer, or even your Smart TV, smartphone or tablet.
If you connect to your computer, you can use the free PC HQ App to test and calibrate your controller. Unfortunately, this controller isn’t compatible with the PowerA Gamer HQ App.
Final Thoughts
You can pick up the PowerA OPS V1 controller for less than £40 if you look around. At that price,e you can’t really go wrong. With the host of features usually only available in higher price controllers you get a lightweight powerhouse. This controller is especially good for cloud gaming, giving it an extra arrow in the quiver.
The PowerA OPS V1 Wireless Controller receives the Thumb Culture Gold Award.
