November 7th, known as N7 Day, is a significant day in the calendar of Mass Effect fans. ‘N7’ refers to the in-universe military designation used by Earth’s System Alliance, assigned to trilogy protagonist Commander Shepard and Mass Effect: Andromeda character Alec Ryder, among others.
On this day each year, Mass Effect developer BioWare tends to release new merchandise or updates on the franchise. In previous years, these information drops have focused on teasing the next game in the franchise, including an event last year that saw fans deciphering clues to earn snippets from a new teaser video. However, following the recent release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard (DA:TV), BioWare tempered expectations leading into N7 Day by saying this year would be “quieter”. Quieter does not mean silent, so let’s look at everything announced on N7 Day 2024.
I’m Commander Shepard And This Is My Favourite Site On The Internet
Mass Effect TV Show Officially In Development
The first whispers of a Mass Effect TV project were heard back in 2021 when Amazon was reportedly negotiating a deal. That deal appears to have materialised as Amazon MGM Studios has officially begun work on a TV series based on Mass Effect. Details are scarce for now, but we know that Daniel Casey (F9: The Fast Saga) is writing and Ari Arad (Borderlands, Uncharted) is executive producing. Personally, these attachments do not spark excitement for the project so my expectations are tempered, however, with BioWare‘s Mike Gamble (Mass Effect Project Director) and Karim Zreik (Daredevil, The Punisher) also onboard as EPs there is hope.
Ultimately we’ll need a lot more details before we can accurately gauge excitement on this, but I’m happy to let them cook.
Collaborations with Dragon Age: The Veilguard, No Man’s Sky, And Destiny 2
In a series of cross-game collaborations, Mass Effect-related items have become available in several titles. Destiny 2 and No Man’s Sky both see previously available Mass Effect promotional items return. In BioWare‘s own DA:TV a special chest has been added to an existing mission.
Destiny 2
Players can visit the in-game Eververse Store to claim the Alliance Drop Ship Sparrow, Alliance Scout Frigate Ship, and Enhanced Defense Ghost Shell, all for free. These items were available earlier this year alongside 3 armour sets based on Shepard, Liara and Garrus.
No Man’s Sky
The iconic Mass Effect ship Normandy SR1 is again available for players to earn in No Man’s Sky. First seen back in 2021, an overhauled limited-time expedition returns so players who missed out the first time can grab the legendary frigate for their collection. Travellers have 2 weeks to log in and complete the mission. God Speed.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Perhaps the most significant drop of the day in terms of information for theory crafters, came in the form of a new gear chest in DA:TV. Within the chest, players will find a new cosmetic set for their character, along with a note from Harding. The note being from Harding is significant as the character is voiced by Ali Hillis who also voices Liara T’Soni in the Mass Effect games. The note could be interpreted as hinting towards Shepard’s return, or could simply be a small Easter Egg for fans. Time will tell.
To find the chest, players must complete the Harding mission “The Singing Blade”. Once they have done this, or if they have previously completed it, the chest will appear in the Lighthouse.
BioWear Gear Sale & New Collectibles
Fans can save up to 50% on items in the N7 collection over at the BioWear Gear store this week. Some items are even showing at more than 50% discounted prices so grab a bargain while you can.
Commander Shepard Statue
Dark Horse Direct has launched pre-orders on a new limited edition Commander Shepard statue. This 1/6th scale replication of the Alliance hero is limited to 1000 pieces. At 14.5″ tall and weighing over 11kgs the statue is beautifully detailed. There’s currently a 20% discount effective until 13th November.
Tali And FemShep Join Tubbz Collection
Your bath time Mass Effect recreations can soon include the female version of Commander Shepard and Tali’Zorah as both characters are now available in the cosplaying duck collection, Tubbz. These were technically unveiled a couple of days before N7 Day, but close enough to be included in the celebration. These new ducks join previously released male Shepard and Garrus models. You can pre-order them today for an estimated delivery of mid-December. These could be good stocking fillers for a Mass Effect fan in your life. I’ve chosen to spring for the Tali version, obviously.
Volante Launch Spectre Trench Coat
U.S. pop culture clothing brand Volante announced a new addition to their Mass Effect range on N7 Day. This new trench coat design is based on the attire of the mysterious N7 Agent shown in last year’s teaser trailer. The announcement was accompanied by a cheeky recreation of the trailer featuring Volante’s male model (seen above). While strikingly beautiful in its design, the trench coat comes with an eye-watering price tag of $495. One for the more wealthy fans then.
Until Next Time…
That’s everything from N7 Day 2024. Quieter in terms of teases for Mass Effect 5? Certainly. But there are some cool promotional items available, and new or discounted merch for those interested. I’ll be logging into No Man’s Sky in time to grab the Normandy as I missed it the first time.
With the DA:TV team recently announcing their move to working on the next Mass Effect game we can expect N7 Day 2025 to be a really exciting one. I’ll be here to bring you all the news next November so keep your eyes on Thumb Culture till then. In the meantime, here’s our review of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.
