Saints Row IV Re-Elected Review – The Resurrection of a Saint?

The Saints Row series of games have a relatively illustrious history, first launching in 2008 as a respectable take on Grand Theft Auto, before spawning a number of sequels which got progressively more wacky. Unfortunately, my mum wouldn't let me play violent games back in those days (I only got to play Bomberman when I moved out of the family home at 25), so I never got to experience the franchise on release. As such, when the chance came up to review Saints Row IV Re-Elected on the Switch, I jumped at it.  I'm actually the perfect person to review this game, I reckon, as I've no previous experience of Saints Row games, and suspect this may be the same position that a lot of gamers who are considering Saints Row IV Re-Elected's purchase on the Switch may hold as well. You can, therefore,...

Doom 64 Review – Left In Hell: The Forgotten Slayer

Back in 1997, the world was going crazy for 3d. The Nintendo 64 was out, Mario 64 had changed the gaming landscape, and a behemoth of the First Person Shooter genre was released on the world - GoldenEye. In its wake, Doom 64 struggled to get the attention it truly deserved. Bethesda are now rectifying that with the re-release of the cult classic Doom 64, available now across all major platforms (PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch). Whether you're done ripping and tearing in Doom Eternal, or looking for something to hold you over until its Switch release, let's see if this forgotten release can stand up with its peers. Gameplay Doom 64 is a fast-paced shooter with a focus on movement, big guns, and all kinds of hellspawn trying to stop you from reaching the exit. So far, so Doom. And ...

Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection Review – Zero or Hero

Last month Capcom released Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection. This epic collection consists of 6 titles, 3 Zero titles and 3 ZX titles. I have been a Mega Man fan since my introduction to it on the NES. I remember returning to it over and over again. Despite knowing exactly what this re-release entails, I was hyped to get playing.  This review is for the Nintendo Switch edition of the collection, however, it is available on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. Gameplay For those who are new to this franchise, let me introduce you to Mega Man (Originally known as Rockman). He was created as a part of an experiment converting a human into a fighting robot. Many people will recognise Mega Man in his original form, from the series. However, he has taken on many different looks throughout the titl...

Exit the Gungeon Review – Exit, Strategy

Enter the Gungeon released on Nintendo Switch back in late 2017. For the uninitiated, Enter the Gungeon was a rogue-lite with more guns than you can shake a broomstick at, and it hooked me immediately with its fast-paced, bullet-hell action and wild boss design. The story, such as it was, revolved around four characters entering a towering structure called The Gungeon, which was populated by sentient, aggressive bullets. They had each heard the legend of a revolver which could kill the past and wipe out mistakes. Weapons ranged from bog-standard shotguns to screen-dominating lasers. And that's not all, we're talking egg-firing grenade launchers, a guitar which launched wild solos as you hold down the trigger... even a t-shirt cannon. Exit the Gungeon picks up after each character achiev...

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy Review – Now, That’s A Name I’ve Not Heard In A Long Time

It's a good time to be Star Wars fan. Despite a few rocky releases, it's as popular as ever and after the fantastic Stars Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (see Stu's thoughts here), there's a new hope for gamers. Whilst we wait for the next big release for the franchise, classic titles are hitting modern consoles. The latest port sees Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy hit the Nintendo Switch and PS4. Brought back to us by Aspyr, the online multiplayer classic comes to Nintendo Switch with modernized controls. Take on the role of a new student eager to learn the ways of the Force from Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. You can pick it up here, but first, read on to find out if you should. Gameplay Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is a hybrid 3rd person/FPS action game, and is actually the 3rd...

Shinsekai: Into the Depths Review – Going Deeper Underground

Shinsekai: Into the Depths is a deep dive into an expansive underwater world. Beginning life as an Apple Arcade exclusive, the Metroidvania, survival puzzler has tunnelled its way to the Nintendo Switch.  Full disclosure. Whenever I hear the words ‘mobile game’, I shudder. All I think of is shovelware trash, littered with microtransactions. Games that are not for real gamers. Yes, when it comes to my views on mobile games, I’m narrow-minded. In steps Capcom, a company who I adore and have arguably been the best developer in recent years. Could they finally pull my head out of my arse? In short, the answer is yes. Gameplay In Shinsekai: Into the Depths, you take control of a silent, nameless protagonist who has been forced to take refuge in the ocean due to the land above being cov...

Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Switch Review

This is my first ever Animal Crossing game. Somehow previous titles have flown under my radar. Quarantined within a fairly small flat with a health pandemic circling the globe and many economies in free-fall, the carefree socialisation and mingling in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons trailers looked massively appealing. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is like a tiny ray of sunshine peeking through ever-darkening clouds. On your not-quite-deserted island nothing can (seriously) hurt you, and the only bugs you can catch are those which are too slow for your net. You don’t need to get into arguments about who is in charge or worry about where your next pay cheque is going to come from. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is exactly what isolated, confined, frightened people need right now. It’s q...

Murder By Numbers Review – Elementary my dear quadrature

Remember the 90's? Flannel shirts, MTV, Furby, Tamagotchi's, bowl Cuts, neon patterns, amazing cartoons, and the idea that all robots are sentient. Murder By Numbers dives headfirst into all the nostalgia possible, and in classic 90's fashion, sends you and your robot buddy to hunt down bad guys. Only, instead of muscle-bound action heroes, these criminals will face the wrath of cognitive thinking. Developed by Mediatonic games, Murder By Numbers is available now on Nintendo Switch and PC. Gameplay Murder By Numbers is at its heart a series of logic puzzles (commonly known a Picross or Nanogram puzzle) wrapped in a visual novel. Set in the '90s, you follow Honor Mizhari, an actor who finds herself in a somewhat forced career change. She used to be a hit TV detective but now fin...

Dead or School Review – Perverted by Language

Dead or School first came to the public's attention via an ultimately unsuccessful Indiegogo campaign which began in 2016. Thankfully developers StudioNanafushi were able to find enough yen down the back of their sofas to finish their work, and it seems to be paying off as hype continues to build around this zombie-themed 2D action RPG. How does it fare against other titles in the already over-crowded Metroidvania genre? Dead or School mirrors Metro 2033 in terms of its basic plot. Many years ago mutant/zombie things overthrew the world, and the survivors took up residence in the Tokyo subway tunnels to avoid becoming dinner for the undead. You play as Hisako, the granddaughter of the village elder, who has long-since dreamed of visiting the surface. She has heard of wonderful place...

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX Review

The Pokemon series has had a plethora of spin-off titles ranging from Picross to Pokken. As the Switch enjoys recycling games more than Snorlax enjoys a snooze, we were bound to get more remasters. Next on the long list of ports and re-releases is Spike Chunsoft's remaster of their first two Pokemon Dungeon games, which have been re-worked into one complete title: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX - catchy right? Gameplay The game starts with a personality test. You answer a range of questions to determine your spirit Pokemon. "Psyduck? What the..." but don't worry, if you are not happy with the Pokemon selected based on your answers, you can select one of the 16 Pokemon as your main character and an extra one to take the mantel of being your partner. The plot is at the forefro...
