Coming into July with our first-ever SteelSeries headset review at Thumb Culture. What better way than to bring you a nice little review of the recently released Arctis Nova 3X Wireless headset. Released back at the start of June, we’ve had this headset for a couple of weeks, and let me tell you, it’s nice to have a new SteelSeries headset to try out.

Steel doesn’t always have to be hard.

I’m a bit fan of what SteelSeries release, and after owning the Arctis Pro Wireless since it was first released back in 2018 I only recently had to retire it when it kept cutting out. I went through a host of different headsets, but thankfully, I’ve returned to a place of familiarity. Let’s go and talk about what makes the Arctis Nova 3X Wireless an incredibly priced headset.

Design Features

As with most headset purchases, you are always looking at what features the headset can give you. Thankfully, SteelSeries has packed a lot of features into this so-called budget headset. Let’s start with the comfort, weighing only 260g, this headset is light. Now, don’t be fooled, it still feels solid and sturdy, but with a nice stretchy headband with adjustment points. You will no longer feel the strain of your headset sitting heavy on your head. Allowing you to have those long gaming sessions without worrying about getting fatigued.

With a fully charged battery lasting up to 40 hours, you won’t be charging up very often. Don’t worry, though, if the dreaded low battery warning catches you out. Just plug in and with an optimised fast charge, you can get up to 9 hours of playtime with just a 15-minute charge. Pretty neat if you ask me! Just use the included USB-C cable and you are away. Speaking of the cable, whatever version of the headset you choose, you can use the cable to go plug and play between any number of devices. Or even make use of the multiplatform USB-C Dongle to do the same.

When you have it all nicely charged and you want to play with your friends, the microphone on the Arctis Nova 3X is incredible. I had a few comments about how clear the microphone was and how nice it sounded. The ClearCast 2.X microphone gives a clarity to your voice that meant even the most seasoned gamers felt they needed to speak up about it. If you are playing on your own, you can even remove the microphone to streamline the wearing experience.

Sound Quality

As with any headset, the sound quality is what you are most interested in. The Arctis Nova 3X have incredible quality. I was honestly shocked at just how good they sounded. This is mostly down to the fact that SteelSeries doesn’t have a habit of adding a cheaper driver alternative to their budget headset. Their Neodymium Magnetic drivers, give a great frequency response of 20-20,000 Hz, giving warmth to the sound that is notoriously SteelSeries. I honestly think I could tell the difference between all the gaming headsets just on sound alone. Maybe that’s a challenge for the Thumb Culture TikTok?

With the great sound also comes a great app. Firing up the SteelSeries GG app, you can customise the sound so much, but one thing that impressed me the most. The Game Audio Presets. All are designed by either members of the community or by esports pros. These are either designed to give you a competitive edge or just to better immerse you in the game you are playing. With over 200 presets both in the computer app as well as the mobile app, you are going to be able to easily switch depending on what game you are playing.

Even better, but you can choose specific presets depending on the connection type. So if you are more likely to listen to music through the Bluetooth connection, just select a music preset. Leaving the 2.4GHz dongle connection to be purely for your Call of Duty preset. The gaming world is your oyster.

So comfortable, I can’t stop wearing them!

Final Thoughts

With so much to talk about when it comes to the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3X Wireless, you might think that these are my new favourite headsets. And you’d be right! I absolutely love everything about these. From the price to the comfort. From the sound to the microphone. They just epitomise exactly what a budget headset should deliver. Great sound, great features, but not pricing those on a budget out of owning them.

Well played, SteelSeries, take a bow.

The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 3X Wireless headset receives a glorious Thumb Culture Platinum Award.
