So you’ve just unboxed your brand new Switch 2, and you want a launch title. Now there were plenty launched, but nothing quite as colourful as Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S! This mashup game is released on a whole host of platforms, but we are going to concentrate purely on that lovely new Ninty console. Bringing the colourful Puyo and the harsh, lined shapes into one game may well have been a challenge. Not so, said SEGA.

Colourful Crazy Chaos

If you are a fan of old school matching puzzlers, or creating lines to survive. This might just be perfect for you. Let’s read on to find out a little more.

Gameplay

Gameplay is simple; picking from a few different options on the main menu will thrust you into the game. There is a section for lessons, but let’s be honest, we all know what we need to do. Match 4 coloured tiles in the Puyo Puyo element, or complete a line using the different shapes in the Tetris side. This is what makes Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S such a joy to play. The simplicity of the game, the pick-up and play aspect that so many games are lacking these days.

Keep an eye on the objectives

Firing up the adventure mode takes you on a nice little story. Featuring colourful and quirky characters, even some old blue friends make a return. I think my favourite character was Risukuma, a bear holding a couple of vials of purple and green fluid. This guy gives me the impression that he likes to mess around with science. I mean, what can go wrong… right?

Each different round gives you a potential of 3 stars to collect. These are achieved by completing certain tasks, the vast majority of which are purely point-based, which makes progress relatively straightforward. To win a round, you simply have to outscore your opponent. Do this by setting up chains or by clearing multiple lines at once. These then send blank blocks to the other side, causing havoc and meaning that it’s harder for your nemesis to hit their own chains.

Yes! Another win!

Other Modes

Aside from the Adventure, you also get a Solo mode where you can fire up a game of either Tetris or Puyo Puyo and just play endlessly. You also have access to the Multiplayer mode, which, to be honest, I didn’t even touch during my playtesting, being so engaged in the fun of solo play!

Then, finally, you have the Lessons, this is for people who are not familiar with either of the mashed-together games to go and find out exactly what you’ve got yourself into.

Graphics & Audio

The graphics in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S are very, very nice. Featuring bright colours and cute characters, the game is friendly to look at and definitely lulls you into a false sense of security.

As for the audio, it is what you would expect. The typical earworms, although it was nice to hear a new updated version of the Tetris Theme song.

Ah, good old fashioned nostalgia

Longevity

The main story of around 8 hours long, but around 30 hours to complete all the quests and objectives. You are going to have plenty of fun with Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. Add to that the multiplayer portion, which has endless potential. This is a game that you will absolutely come back to regularly. Pick it up, play a few rounds, and then put it down. It’s a great downtime game.

Final Thoughts

So, should you be picking up Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S? Definitely, whilst you might not want to pick it up at full price and wait for a sale. I can guarantee that wherever you pick it up from, you will have a lot of fun with this one.
