Ruiner Review – Cyberpunk Bloodbath

Ruiner is a Cyberpunk anime stylised top-down action shooter. It's the debut release from Reikon Games and produced by Devolver Digital. Before we delve too deeply into the world of Ruiner, as its Reikon Games' debut, I just wanted to give you a little info into their background. Reikon is a studio based in Warsaw that was founded in 2014. Four veteran game designers who have such titles as The Witcher Series, Dying Light and Shadow Warrior to their name. With that level of experience and knowledge, I'm pretty excited to see what they have given us in their first Indi release. Ruiner is very much a story driven game set in the year 2091 in a Metropolis known as Rengkok. You take on the role of a somewhat augmented man/machine sociopath hybrid who goes on a brutal vendetta after a voice ...

Y’s VIII: Lacrimosa Of Dana Review – JRPG Explorathon

Since 1987 the red-headed Adol Christin has been constantly entangled in legendary adventures in the Y’s series (pronounced like “ease”). He is always somehow at the right place at the right time to embark on the most JRPG of JRPG tropes. Plots to destroy the world, legendary monsters, evil gods, amnesia, demons, annnnnddddd you get the picture. The next installment of the series, Y’s VIII: Lacrimosa Of Dana, has finally arrived on the PS4. I have been an avid JRPG fan ever since I began gaming as a young lad on the SNES with amazing games such as Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3, Earthbound, etc. I somehow never got involved with the Y’s series in all the years, so Y’s VIII: Lacrimosa Of Dana was my first foray into the saga. It felt like an advantage not having any expectations or bagg...

EGX 2017 – Interview with COO of Slightly Mad Studios Rod Chong

So whilst at EGX I got the opportunity to ask Rod Chong the Chief Operating Officer a few questions about Project Cars 2. So here for your reading pleasure is the transcript of that interview. Stu: This game feels a bit more raw, its different, its definitely more realistic. I play with a Fanatec wheel and its ridiculous. Rod: The philosophy behind the tyres in particular has changed, it was a couple of months after project cars 1 was out and we sat down with a couple of Bentley racing drivers (Guy Smith), put them in their cars and they were going around Bathurst and going up the hill and the back end stepped out, he corrected as you would a real car and spun. He looked at us, "that's not real, i would have been able to catch it" and then we stuck David Brabban in the simulator,...

NBA Live 18 Review – Swish or Air Ball?

NBA Live 18 returns for another year that, in previous years, has been dominated by a certain other basketball game. However, EA Tiburon have returned with what they feel could be the game that puts them back on top. Let's have a look and see! Gameplay There are a few new gameplay elements this year, included a new one on one control system. This sees you having to get the defender off balance by using dribble moves, and likewise as a defender you have to guess the direction the offence is going to drive. Guessing correctly and timing it right cuts off their attack and gives you an opportunity to steal the ball and start off on a counter attack. Using a defensive assist button allows you to stay in front of the ball carrier and then it makes it easier to try and cut them off when they dr...

Plague Road Review – Fear The Reaper?

Plague Road, by game development studio Arcade Distillery, is the result of what happens when a kickstarter campaign successfully reaches out for backers, well 1119 backers to be accurate.  Requiring a $30,000 goal, the support shown for the project almost doubled the target with $55,734 raised. So what is Plague Road all about I here you cry? With a name like that it sure isn't going to be about fluffy bunnies and happy times.  Plague Road is a combination of a sideways adventure scroller with turn based tactical battles that sees you playing a lone doctor who is travelling through a land that has been ravished by a plague.  The quest? to search for survivors following the outbreak across a series of regions having left the relative safety of your farm.  As the story unfolds you learn ...

Beat the Game – The Sound of Success Is Funky

Beat the Game is the first offering from independent studio Worm Animation. With several nominations and an award, Beat the Game should be well worth a look. Formed in 2013 in San Francisco, Worm Animation are definitively into the Sci-Fi genre and character art, so let's have a look to see if they are bringing anything new to the table. Gameplay Beat the Game is weird, in fact I would say it's very weird. From the opening scene to the end of the game there is a high weirdness factor. This said, is the game any good? You start with the opening scene of your character flying a hover bike with an infectious groove building. Your character clearly isn't the best driver as he hits the only obstacle in an open desert. The bike is smashed up and hope seems lost. You play a music loving ...

Project Cars 2 Review – Start Your Engines

Slightly Mad Studios (SMS) are the guys behind the amazing Project Cars racing game. Scratch that last part! Project Cars is by no means a game. Project Cars is a full-blown racing simulation. Anyway Slightly Mad Studios are back again. This time they bring us Project Cars 2 which is available on Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4. Before I start this review, I know our regular readers will be wondering why I’m reviewing this game and not Stuart. Well as it happened the gods smiled down on me and wiped his hard drive and then sent him to EGX. So Stuart didn’t get the chance to hammer his Fanatec set-up this time around. So here I am with an evil glint in my eye getting ready to review Project Cars 2. I have to admit this is a favourite genre for me so I personally purchased this game ins...
