Silksong Will Release This Summer?

It’s been 84 over 6 years since Hollow Knight: Silksong was first revealed by Team Cherry, way back in February 2019. Since then, the journey to release has been a tumultuous journey for fans. However, 2025 has begun with a flurry of small, but hopeful, titbits of news. Taking this burst of news, and some older quotes from people close to the game and Team Cherry, we can speculate on a summer release.

There Has Been Yes News

Prior to the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, Silksong fans had been enjoying an uncharacteristically busy period of updates. Most of what the community were using to cling on to hope though, was borderline insignificant, such as metadata updates to the Team Cherry website, or a confirmation via a Twitter reply that the game is indeed real and progressing. In March, however, things began to heat up a little.

This seems like a convenient way to get around.

A Brief Catch-Up

On March 18th, ID@Xbox made a blog post discussing games that have been successful after receiving funding from the initiative. Towards the end of the post, they mention some exciting up-coming games, including Hollow Knight: Silksong. I immediately checked on the release dates of those other games mentioned, and at the time, two were due in April and one was undated (but has now received a tentative date of Summer 2025). This obviously piqued my interest. Could this be our first hint towards an imminent release window?

Shortly after this, on March 24th, the Steam page for Silksong was updated with a couple of new library images, an up-to-date copyright year (not changed since 2019) and compatibility information for GeForce Now. Again, this felt like a bit of a reach to be calling news, but they are signs of life from the developers, and came in quick succession after the ID@Xbox post.

Unbelievably, there was significant news during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct on April 2nd. Five whole seconds of (mostly) new footage, and a confirmation that the game should will release in 2025. Now, we’ve been down this road before with the Xbox Showcase in 2022, which ‘confirmed’ the game would release before June 12th 2023. However, almost 3 years on from that, we can be more hopeful of this window being correct, right?

Why Could This Mean More News Soon?

When trying to predict when in 2025 Silksong might release, we have some direct quotes from Marketing and PR Manager Matthew Griffin aka Leth.

From these statements, we can see that Leth‘s preference would be to have a completed game finalised and ready to go as a first step. Then he’d look for big, upcoming marketing opportunities, even if they are a couple of months away. We also know that he’d prefer to release indie games in the first half of the year.

An image displaying multiple Discord messages from Leth.- “What if you finish making your game in October? Do you launch it then?” - “Shoudln't I reach out to Geoff Keighley to try and get an announcement during the Game Awards instead of launching in October?” - “I guess my point is, when your game is done you kinda look for big marketing opportunities and plan around those.” - “Big games tend to launch and eat up the airwaves at end of year — I prefer early year launches for indies in general.”
I will definitely read too much into these statements.

During an interview with BlueSR on YouTube, Leth also mentioned his general marketing preference. When talking about how much a developer should reveal about a game during development, he believes that rather than posting early and often, waiting until closer to release and doing a ‘marketing burst’ is a better approach, stating “[it’s] a better path to take with indie games.”

Short Announcement Timeframe

Team Cherry have a history of announcing the release of content just a few weeks before the actual release date. Hollow Knight‘s release date was announced on the February 10th. The game released two weeks later on the 24th. The dates for DLC packs for Hollow Knight were all announced 6 to 8 weeks prior to release. The PS4 and Xbox versions were also announced a fortnight before they were available.

Taking this into consideration, when we do eventually get the Silksong release date, it should hopefully be a short wait until the game is then actually live and ready to play.

My Prediction

Given Leth‘s preferences for trying to hit big events for marketing, with a sudden burst of activity, and Team Cherry‘s history of announcements and releases begin close together, here’s what I think is going to happen.

We have Summer Games Fest right around the corner — there isn’t a much bigger time in gaming than June. I believe the marketing for release has already begun, which is why we’ve had a sudden jump in the number of official partners mentioning the game. Silksong‘s release date will be announced at Geoff’s Friend Fest, and will be before the end of June. Quite possibly the 12th (wouldn’t that be poetic) or 19th.

I had previously predicted the 13th June in a Reddit thread, so I’m happy I can at least now back that up with some confirmation bias. The painful truth is, I know as much as you do about the actual release plans of Silksong, and that is apparently it will be this year. Thanks for indulging me this far, though. I’ll be ready and waiting to bring you all the real news on the official release as soon as we get it. See you there.
