Sony released one of their regular State of Play shows on September 24th 2024. These shows tend to be a little more low-key than the PlayStation Showcase events and mostly contain updates on previously revealed or announced games. That being said, we did see some decent announcements here.

State of Play September 2024 Round-Up

I’ve broken the news into sections below to try to help organise all the different announcements and reveals. Let’s not waste any more time…

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

Let’s start with the biggest news from the State of Play, Ghost of Yotei. A follow-up to Sucker Punch’s 2020 Ghost of Tsushima was announced and tentatively dated for 2025. This new adventure will follow a new protagonist, Atsu (voiced by the ineffable Erika Ishii), and is set over 300 years after the first title. The game will take place in the area surrounding Mount Yotei, which is today known as Hokkaido. They’ve not given much else away about the new game, but promise new mechanics, gameplay improvements and new weapons.

The Midnight Walk is another new announcement and is coming to PS5 and PSVR2 in 2025. This dark-fantasy claymation game looks like something out of Tim Burton’s nightmares. In The Midnight Walk, you’ll experience the journey of The Burnt One and their resurrected vessel, Potboy. Together they will travel a perilous highway, outsmart enemies who wish to devour you, and meet a fantastical cast of creatures.

XLGAMES has revealed ArcheAge Chronicles, formerly known as ArcheAge 2, as the next entry in the ArcheAge series. This online action RPG is built in Unreal Engine 5 and features a deep narrative, extensive open-world, dynamic combat, and more. There’s no word on a date yet for this title, but be sure to keep your eyes on the developer’s socials for more info.

During the September State of Play, the bulk of news came in the form of release date announcements and titles newly arriving on PlayStation.

In terms of release date reveals, we learned:

Coming to PlayStation

We also learned about a few titles that are making their way onto PlayStation consoles in the not-too-distant future.

Fantasian: Neo Dimension, the fantasy RPG from the legendary Hironobu Sakaguchi, lands on PS5 on December 5th. With music from long-time collaborator Nobuo Uematsu and hand-crafted diorama environments, this is sure to be an audio-visual treat when it finally comes to consoles in a couple of months.

Palworld is another title making the move across to PlayStation and was announced as launching immediately onto the PSN Store during the State of Play (everywhere outside of Japan). The monster capture, open-world adventure has been a big hit since launching at the start of 2024 and has now drawn the long-expected ire of Nintendo. Play it while you can!

Finally, Fear The Spotlight from developer Cozy Game Pals releases on PS4 and PS5 on October 22nd, just in time for Halloween. This old-school survival horror title has received very positive reviews since its launch on Steam in 2023 and is now receiving a major update and launching to a fresh audience.

We were also treated to new looks at gameplay from Dragon Age: Veilguard, Hell Is Us, and Tower of Aghasba. All 3 games offer very distinct experiences, be sure to check out their trailers and new content videos.

You Wouldn’t Download Content

No less than five games had new DLC content shown off at the State of Play.

  • Astro Bot is getting a free update sometime this fall, including speed-run levels and new bots to rescue.
  • Alan Wake II – The Lake House DLC is releasing sometime this October.
  • Stellar Blade is teaming up with Nier: Automata to deliver some themed DLC. No date given yet but the update will also include a photo mode.
  • Two new player characters join the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge game in the new DLC Radical Reptiles. There’s also a free update to the base game adding a remixed OST. The DLC and update launched during the State of Play.

To round out the DLC news movie tie-ins are back! Sonic x Shadow Generations is getting a DLC pack based on the new Sonic The Hedgehog 3 movie. This DLC launches on December 12th and adds new levels inspired by the film.

Be Kind, Remaster

Nostalgia is a powerful drug, so let’s take a look at the latest games from the days of old (and not so old) that are making a comeback in the next few months.

First up is Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 remastered. This pair of games first appeared on PlayStation in 1999 and 2001 respectively. They return this December, after roughly 25 years, in a new collection for the PS4 and PS5.

Also returning after 25 years is the JRPG series, Lunar. This is another remastered collection containing both  Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete. So far we only have Spring 2025 as the release window but when that does come around you can get the Lunar Remastered Collection on both PS4 and PS5.

We travel into the not-too-distant past for the final remaster of the show. Horizon Zero Dawn is receiving the ol’ spit and shine with a new remastered version for the PlayStation 5. Adding over 10 hours of new mocap performances and bringing its visual standards up to match its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered release on October 31st. Somewhat generously, depending on who you ask, PS4 version owners can upgrade for $9.99.

Peripherals On The Periphery

Rounding off the round-up, a few new shiny, physical goodies were also announced at September’s State of Play.

Along with a new split-screen update for LEGO Fortnite coming in October, on October 3rd you can pre-order a new LEGO Fortnite-themed DualSense controller. Pre-orders also launch the same day for the new Chroma collection of DualSense controllers and PlayStation 5 Console Covers. These come in 3 new metallic variations – Chroma Pearl, Chroma Indigo, and Chroma Teal.

That’s a wrap. Hopefully, there’s something from this big collection of announcements that you’re excited about over the coming months and beyond. Thanks for reading our round-up of the PlayStation State of Play September 2024.
