Overthrown is a new game hitting early access today, December 5th. Created by Brimstone and published by Maximum Entertainment, the game itself is a city builder with you being its ever watchful Queen. I’ve seen TikTok videos of Overthrown and it looks pretty good. If you are curious to play it yourself, then head on over to the Steam page.

Nothing is gonna stop me!

Town hall is up, what’s next?

Gameplay

Overthrown offers two map sizes for the player, Foothills, which is medium size and a larger one called Seaside Cliffs. When you drop into your newly created world, a crown will be noticeable in the distances. It gives you the power to build, and this is how we will create our kingdom. A small tutorial is there, but it doesn’t really go that in depth.

I am slashing at a tree until it eventually falls down. Small logs fall after it has been cut down.
Tree didn’t stand a chance.

Unlike other games where you would begin making tools to collect resources. Instead, Overthrown lets you just beat them down or slice them with a sword. The Queen is honestly just a powerhouse. Resources such as wood and stone are collected the same way and there isn’t any need to worry about inventory space.

Movement & Crown

So far where Overthrown shines the most is its movement. It just feels so fun running around and lifting stuff, placed a building in the wrong spot don’t worry, simply lift up! The stamina bar has only one level when not wearing the crown, but slowly builds up more if you are wearing it. You can lose the crown when being defeated. If you happen to be defeated, then a red crown icon will appear on the small compass above the screen. Losing the crown will make your citizens lose morale, which can lead to them leaving the town.

Character from Overthrown bounces on the ground as more layers rise up to create equal ground level.

Citizens

As you construct buildings, citizens will come to the area. You need to ensure that you meet their needs (by making beds, toilets and providing food). Citizens will get to work straight away once you place a new building. I like that the game only gives you citizens upon constructing a new building, as it makes everything easier to manage. Employees generate “Knowledge” over time, which you need for skill trees to further unlock new buildings. However, you need to pay the soldiers you hire with gold coins. Coins are collected by destroying bandit camps, I couldn’t find any other way.

I'm fighting a couple of bandits, after defeating one and sending them flying, I begin attacking the other.
Combat is simple but I do wish there was more moves to use.

Graphics & Audio

The graphics in Overthrown are vibrant, colourful, and building designs are simple and fun. Your Queen’s character colour palette is also customisable. However, I noticed the Brick Works building is missing colours to its design, which may be an error, but I’m unsure. While the ambience is pleasant, it’s awfully quiet with very few sound effects. I felt the need to play my music to bring some sound to the game. I also noticed some small frame-rate issues, though it’s understandable in an early access game. The seasonal visual are also lacking. For example I wish when the season was in winter it actually snowed. Some nice visual clues of the changing seasons would add to the charm of the game.

I am cycling through a few colour pallets the player can equip to their Queen.
Not a bad way to stand out among friends

Final Thoughts

Now I didn’t play the game for long since whilst it is pretty, I felt that the game lacked any real content. In my short time I even unlocked all I could in the skill trees. The town is okay, but I don’t know how to really manage it since the tutorial is more for the learning of builds rather than catering for the people’s needs. I enjoy how the Queen plays, for example, with sprinting, running on water, carrying everything, etc etc. but the actual world is rather empty. The exemption being the small bandit camps and boar nests. I wish we could mine ourselves and dig underground or have major monsters to defend against.

Hopefully, some interesting content is on its way to Overthrown, because as of right now it feels underwhelming. Pretty, but underwhelming.
