By now everyone has heard of Nacon, right? Just in case you haven’t let me give you the 411. They create some great pieces of hardware, including the Daija Arcade Stick, the Revolution X Pro and the RIG 500 Pro headset to name a few. And they’ve done it again! Nacon have hit us with the Revolution 5 Pro controller and we were lucky enough to get some time with one of the limited samples.

Let’s Get To Grips

With so many ‘Pro’ controllers out there, what makes this one stand out above the rest? Let’s unbox and find out!

In The Box

When you open up your box you are greeted with a nice fabric case that helps keep your controller secure. Open this up and you get your first glimpse at the Revolution 5 Pro controller in all its glory. This controller has a 3m long braided cable, to allow you to keep the controller charged, or to use it wired. There is a cleaning cloth included and a lovely little accessory box. Inside this accessory box are a number of doodahs and thingamabobs. Unfortunately no dinglehoppers though. You do however get an extra D-pad, 6 Weights of different values, and 6 joystick heads of differing shapes. There’s also an external microphone attachment as well as the USB dongle for connecting wirelessly to both your PlayStation and your PC.

Each part has its own place within this nice secure storage case. Now, onto the controller!

The Controller

Getting hands-on with the actual Revolution 5 Pro I instantly felt it was pretty impressive. Even without any weights stored in the controller grips it’s weighty with a premium feel to the rubberised grips.

Front on this looks like a pretty standard PlayStation controller. The face buttons are all there, Square, Triangle, Circle and X  (or Cross whatever you subscribe to). The touchpad in the middle with the traditional options menu buttons and PlayStation button. It even has a Mute button!

It isn’t until you flip the controller over that you start to get an idea of what extras you get for the inflated price tag. On the back are the trigger stoppers giving you access to a hair trigger for fast responsiveness for shooters. Moving down there is a slider to switch between PlayStation console mode and PC mode. Don’t forget to slide this to PC if you intend use it on there. Yes, I speak from experience! I plugged it in and it took a little while of head-scratching to work out why it wasn’t doing its job!

Moving further down the back of the controller you find where the extra buttons are located. You have two buttons on the back of the Revolution 5 Pro, and then another two on the inside of the grips. Rounding off all the buttons is a Bluetooth button as well as a volume control.

Hands On

Whether you purchase this controller to use on your PlayStation or PC, you are purchasing a premium controller. Out of all the different Nacon controllers I’ve been fortunate enough to use, this one has to be my favourite. The face buttons are clicky enough so you know they have been pressed, but not loud enough to be heard over your gameplay. Add to that the fact this controller has hall effect sticks and I’m sold. Hall effect sticks are whereby they use magnetic sensors and magnets to prevent undue wear and tear. This system also makes the controller more precise and sturdy.

I set the sticks up in a number of configurations through the testing of the Revolution 5 Pro and I have to admit that I always preferred to have it in a standard layout. Whilst you may lose out on some of the haptic feedback you would get with a DualSense controller, the vibration motors in the controller are strong and thankfully don’t suffer from a noise problem.

If you want to take your setup and configuration just that little bit further, Nacon has you covered. With it’s very own Revolution 5 Pro App you can fine-tune multiple options including joystick dead zones, trigger dead zones as well as the intensity of vibrations. And many more!

If you don’t want to dive into this pro configuring then the controller itself is pre-programmed with four distinct profiles. These profiles allow you to experience a range of features without having to go through the app. This includes a racing/sports profile, an FPS one that gives a reactive curve on your left stick, and a progressive curve on the right stick. This gives both quick movement and precision aiming respectively. The last two profiles are an arcade fighting and an infiltration one.

Final Thoughts

There is so much I absolutely love about the Revolution 5 Pro controller, with not much that I dislike, maybe just the price. Coming in just under the £200 mark it’s definitely not cheap. However, it is slightly cheaper than the DualSense Edge controller and has a few extra functionality options. Essentially if you are in the market for a new fancy controller, then you should dive in and pick up one of these.
