Cats? Building? Sign me up!
It is no secret that I enjoy building games, much like it is not a secret that I absolutely love cats. So having a building game with cats? Just absolutely amazing. Breath-taking. Stunning. Awesome. You get my drift. The game has a unique look to it that I found very intriguing, and the gameplay looked really fun from the trailer as well! I was really excited to play this game, and I’m happy to report that it did not let me down. Here is a more general question this time around: What is your absolutely favourite cat in a video game? Let me know in the comments!

Gameplay
Kity Builder is a super cute and very stylized game in which you take on the role of Kity, a cat with the task of creating a vibrant, bustling city on an untouched island. Build structures, decorate the environment, and even lay down paths to shape the barren little island into a paradise for other kitties. Along the way, you will meet a cast of many unique characters, make new friends and explore the secrets of the island.
When you first arrive, your main goal is simple and straightforward: build a nice, cosy city for other cats to live in. However, after you wrap up doing just that, Mayor Mewyor refuses to let you go. Not until every single cat on the island is happy. That’s a pretty big task! To make things worse, your boss won’t come pick you up until you have finished all of your work. What a cat-astrophe! So now you have to seek out all the island’s residents, solve their problems, and figure out what you can do to make them happy.
You will meet a very colourful cast of cats who all have different wishes. Some need you to place certain items, while others may ask you to reach certain locations on the island, often requiring quite a bit of tricky platforming. My island is littered with the weirdest, nightmarish box stacks which I used to get up mountains, though there is probably an easier way to do that.

Building
In Kity Builder, the main goal is, unsurprisingly, to build. It is very simple and straightforward, as you don’t have to worry about money or resources. All you need is a blueprint, and you are good to go! Obtaining them, however, is a different pair of shoes. You can find blueprints scattered all over the island, or even get some as rewards for completing quests. They are incredibly useful when you are helping your friends or just exploring the open world. You will often need to get creative to reach certain spots, whether that means stacking houses to jump onto, bouncing off palm trees, or even launching yourself out of an observatory like a cannon! It is very fun to just run around and explore the different biomes and to find the best spots to place some little settlements, camps, or plazas.
There is no time limit and no rush. You can create whatever you want, wherever you want. Just build to your heart’s content, either by following the cute storyline or just creating little communities and decorating the island. It is up to you.

Graphics & Audio
Kity Builder has a very distinctive and unique art style, featuring a 3D pixel world with 2D characters. It is super charming, even though the colours in the background can blend together quite a bit at times, which can be tough on the eyes. At first, I was a bit worried that it might cause me some motion sickness, like some pixelated games tend to, but nope! I was pleasantly surprised to felt completely fine the whole time, which was a huge plus for me. The character designs are adorable and their portraits during dialogue are just really precious. There is even an accessibility option to un-pixel the text for easier reading.
The game has a very fun, cosy soundtrack that sometimes gives off a bit of a nostalgic vibe. The retro-style sound effects when you jump and place down items are a nice touch, too, and add to the general pixel style of the game. It really enhances the game’s atmosphere without ever feeling overwhelming.

Longevity
Kity Builder offers a charming, albeit rather brief, story. From my experience, it can be completed in about one and a half to two hours if you only focus on it. Once you finish the main questline, you unlock even more islands to explore and build on, and also heaps of new blueprints to find! So, if you are really into the game’s building system, there is technically infinite fun to be had!
Final Thoughts
Even though the game’s story wasn’t super long, I still had a really great time playing it. The graphic style is adorable, the gameplay is fun, and the characters are charming and cute. I genuinely enjoyed helping them out and just exploring the island in general. While I do think the story could have been a tiny bit longer, it is still a solid game that delivers exactly what it promises. It absolutely made my evening and I had a blast playing it.
I am very happy to present Kity Builder with the Thumb Culture Gold Award!
