The Game Accessibility Conference aka GAconf, has announced its complete line-up for the next EU event. The European edition will take place in London from April 14th to 15th. It will feature talks and networking opportunities for professionals across all disciplines in the games industry. With an overarching aim is to highlight recent and future developments in game accessibility.

What do you want to talk about?

This year’s EU GAconf  features a wealth of knowledge sharing within the games industry. This includes deep dives from design considerations for deaf gamers, to accessible methods for conducting user research. From best practices for text size to how the Xbox Adaptive Controller has transformed gaming in the seven years since its release. You’ll find it being talked about!

Of course games will also be at the forefront of the conference. With a case study on indie favourite Pine Hearts, alongside presentations on the mobile giant Candy Crush and new release Atomfall.

Speakers will include representatives from Respawn, Rebellion, Ubisoft, and Hyper Luminal Games. All these studios won awards for their accessibility in past years and will be joined by the likes of IO Interactive, PlayStation, King, EA, and Tencent. Service providers such as Good Trouble, Player Research, and Everyone Can will also participate. Disability advocates and specialists set to speak include Mathew Allcock, Dr. Amy Kavanagh, Melody Powell, Lauren Radford, and GAConf co-director Ian Hamilton, a 19-year veteran in the fight for accessibility best practices.

I’m particularly interested in the panel discussion on Day One surrounding the lived experiences of disabled advocates. Whilst on Day Two I can’t wait to hear more about how accessibility intersects with UX design as well as the representation of ADHD in games.

(Conf)idence in Accessibility

Awareness of the significance of accessibility as a cornerstone of the industry has soared over the last decade. And if accessibility in games is of an interest to you, this is the place to be. All attendees will gain knowledge on making the accessibility community’s mantra “when everyone can play, we all win”, a reality.

I’ll be attending the event in person, so stay tuned for updates and exclusive interviews on the website.
