Step into the boots of the folklore sea devil himself, in DAVY x JONES. This new action-adventure FPS is being created by PARASIGHT, and aims for action across the seas of the damned. I’m excited to be checking this game out after watching the trailers. It looks great, so hopefully the gameplay matches. You can pick up the game, which is currently in early access on Steam, for £8.50. Which isn’t too bad of a price.
Why don’t we carve a new bloody legend for ourselves, eh?
DAVY x JONES’ story begins with a quick retelling of the titular character’s grim fate at the hand of Edward Teach (Black Beard). Upon waking up in the Locker, which is an iconic location that comes with the tale of Davy Jones Locker, our head (Davey), and body (Jones), begin their plan to exact revenge on Black Beard and your previous crew who betrayed you.

Gameplay
In DAVY x JONES, we jump into combat with sword and gun in hand. With them, we can launch heavy attacks that will stagger our enemies so that we can then perform vicious attacks on them. Something I noticed while playing was that the amount of freedom isn’t fully there when in combat. It can come across as repetitive, and I found myself using the sword much more than the gun. Thanks to the accuracy of the air slashes it creates, staggering enemies becomes much easier. This doesn’t mean that the gun is useless; it is best used for crowd control with its heavy cannonball rounds. In addition, you’re able to unlock a shot type called Roar. This acts like a shotgun blast. However, this isn’t an alternative form of fire, but more of a skill that requires a cool-down.

You’re able to unlock various other skills with jewels and diamonds that are gathered in the game. One way of getting jewels that I found to be cool, comes from the health essence orbs you use to heal. By allowing two of these orbs to merge, they will form a chest. I loved this idea, but since enemies also spawn when opening, and in-turn more orbs, it can become a little overwhelming on your hardware. Well, it did for mine.
Davy, the head himself
Besides being the “head” of the operation, Davy actually comes in handy. He plays a vital part in combat, exploration, and most of all, stress relief. We use Davy to unlock tentacle-covered doors, or to pull us across gaps with his own tentacles. In combat, he lets the player close the distance by pulling Jones closer, or attacks with his ultimate move called Tempest. But honestly, I love smacking the hell out of him in a little minigame you can do.

The world of DAVY x JONES does have some collectables for the player to find. Each area can later be returned to thanks to the beautiful vessel, and friend Abbey. There are more things to find, such as crypts, or stars that are used to increase your health at the Singrove.
Graphics & Audio
DAVY x JONES is a wonder to look at. Think Alice in Wonderland meets nautical purgatory. As you’d expect from an underworld realm, it’s confusing and spectacular. Davy’s design is brilliant, and the environments look downright majestic. Even the chests, the floating moons you hook onto, and the clock at Singrove are absolutely enchanting. The voice acting is also brilliant, especially for Davy. You can really believe he’s swearing and spitting through his teeth, and he has a gravel to his voice that sounds seaworthy. I also love that Jones only ever mutters a ghostly “Jones” in various degrees of urgency.

The only downside I find is that some characters and enemies are a little boring looking. A lot of them look like mannequins, which, in contrast to how well designed everything else in the DAVY x JONES world, seems a bit lacklustre. That, and I had a few frame rate drops when fighting, particularly in the spawning of multiple fusion chests during combat.
Final Thoughts
I really do love Davy as a character, and his voice actor is spot on. The domain/world whatever you wish to call it so far looks amazing, and each main character I’ve met looks brilliant, especially Jack, and Davey. Combat does need a little work — some enemies seem a little too meaty, and the executions are a little underwhelming. Additionally, when attacking, I found myself using the sword more so, as the gun doesn’t really feel useful. Most of the time I send an air slash then close in with Davy’s hook, strike them and then back up to rinse and repeat. One last little nitpick is that the menu text could be a little bigger, I found myself struggling to read some of the text when trying to purchase new upgrades/skills.
Despite those small concerns, so far I’m loving it. I want to play more, but right now, my game keeps crashing quite frequently when loading new areas. However, due to this being in early access, it is to be expected. I do highly suggest picking up DAVY x JONES, even as it is now, and more so for the future. I enjoyed it that much.
