I am a Fortnite Noob. At least when it comes to playing the game. I have watched people play it and loved every minute. I am also that not at all annoying person yelling I can see someone running, whilst my partner sprints about the map escaping storm after storm. Having never been much good at dual stick gaming for accessibility reasons, I never thought I’d get to enjoy the game first-hand. My only previous dalliance with the game was when my partner and I decided to stream us playing it together. Even then I found much more joy in driving off in golf carts then aiming for that precious Victory Crown. And then Fortnite Chapter 2 Remix came about. A short sweet season that changed everything.
Ready Up
I remember when Fortnite first launched, middle child of the TC Mini Crew was approaching his first birthday and I didn’t have the opportunity to try the game that grabbed my attention. The bright colours, the dances, the varied map. It seemed silly and fun. And at that point I was severely lacking fun in my life. Fast forward seven years and I can say the opposite is very much true!
If you hadn’t have already guessed, I’m currently playing Fortnite Chapter 2 Remix. Now I’m not going to go on about what Fortnite is, because at this point I think everyone knows the game! I haven’t played a shooter since my Halo days back as a teenager. Safe to say lack of practice and some good old cognitive impairment thanks to my Epilepsy, means I am no longer the sharp shooter I once was.
So what made me pick up the controller? Good old fashioned FOMO. This season has made me feel like I’m missing out by not playing the game myself. Even from just my years of spectating, Fortnite Chapter 2 Remix has felt different. Maybe it’s because I love music, but when compared to the recent Gods season, this season seems to have had a slight focus shift. Bringing back the 2019 Chapter 2 was a great idea from Epic. Defeating and then recruiting Snoop Dog as an NPC ally sounds ridiculous. Let alone dancing on records in his vault. It’s exactly that silliness that sparks joy.
Duos fo lyfe
Games are always better with friends, that’s a fact. With it’s bright graphic style and veritable feast of emotes, Fortnite is a game best enjoyed with friends. Whether that be squadding up online, or couch co-op split screen style. Throwing a slurp juice at your duo partner so they can restore their shields. Shouting out “bagsy” when a chest pops out your favourite weapon. Cursing a team mate for getting right and left mixed up. It’s all a better experience as a duo then running about the map solo. Fortnite Chapter 2 Remix is no exception. I have loved seeing the amount of people using the Snoop Dog Walk emote. Waiting around for the Battle Bus becomes much less tedious when a crowd of characters start Snoop walking all around you. The Eminem minigun never fails to make me laugh too. Although getting ambushed by Snoop’s helicopter is not the one!
I never thought a shooter would have me itching for just one more game. Yet here we are. I love my new nightly ritual of putting the TC Mini Crew to bed, eating my dinner and then hopping onto the PlayStation with my partner for a couple of Battle Royale Duo matches. It’s just good fun. And that’s what games should be. I still have (skill) issues in that I am not the best aimer, and I have not locked in the muscle memory button bashing yet. But I’ll get there, and even if I don’t, at least I’m enjoying myself.
Fortnite is free to play on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC and mobile. Just make sure you sign up to Epic Games Store! Fortnite Chapter 2 Remix will come to an end on 30th November at 7pm GMT, with the new season beginning on 1st December.
