Croc is hopping back into action in Croc Legend of the Gobbos Remastered. Argonaut Games has taken up the task of fitting this classic game into more modern settings through upgraded graphics, a brand new control scheme and some other features.

This funky little remaster is available on the Playstation Store for £24.99

Gems, fur balls with crowns and a whole lot of jumping

Gameplay

Simply put, Croc does exactly what it is meant to do. It plays a lot smoother than it used to (or maybe I’m just better at games now) whilst keeping that nostalgic feeling alive. It’s a game that doesn’t have many bells and whistles, but it really doesn’t need them. If you have played Croc in the past, it’s almost exactly the same as playing it back in the days of the PS1.

Jumping, running, and tail whacking are the aim of the game, with some gem collecting on the side. Regardless of how much gaming experience you have, this is one game that will not make you feel like an idiot if you mess up.

Each level is short, and the boss battles are over quickly,y but can still prove to be annoying given the old-school play style. It makes it really easy to pick up and put down whenever you need to. There were times when I would take ten minutes to play a few levels and then go back to what I was doing. It’s a game that doesn’t require a lot of brain power, which is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.

I must have it

Time to jump! Or… not, I guess. That’s okay too.

I love almost everything about this game, but it felt like war flashbacks from the PS1 days whenever I tried to do a running jump. There were times when I would press X to jump after doing a small run up and Croc would fall down and cost me a life. It doesn’t help that every time my jump failed, I just spammed X a little harder, which made me do a ground pound, which either ruined my secret area or sent me plummeting into the abyss.

Graphics & Audio

Argonaut has managed to create the perfect blend of nostalgia with updated graphics. Everything in Croc looks smoother and in higher definition but isn’t so overdone that it doesn’t feel the same. Croc still looks adorable with his simple design and somewhat off-putting far-away stare, but the game has had a much-needed upgrade. It really stands out when you see the lava and any sort of fire.

Round 1… Fight!

I do have one problem with the graphics, which is the speed which the gems flash when you are hit. It’s really jarring and quite harsh on the eyes if you look at it for too long. The solution to this is obviously to just not get hit but it’s really hard to look at.  Hopefully the devs can do something to fix this in future updates if possible.

Longevity

There is no platinum trophy currently available for Croc which is disappointing as a trophy hunter. Altogether there are 20 trophies to collect, which are pretty easy to get if you collect everything in the level. New players may find it a little bit too simplistic, as there isn’t much challenge. That being said,  its simplicity makes it an amazing experience. You can actually enjoy the game without getting overly frustrated by complicated mechanics or convoluted levels.

I’ve spent a couple of hours running around trying to collect everything.

Despite having played this game years ago, there were some levels where I couldn’t remember anything. There were a number of times when I forgot you were supposed to let go of the balloon before you accidentally hit the gong to end the level. This has made it an even more enjoyable experience because I don’t remember everything perfectly. There’s plenty of time to be sunk into this game with a cute little story to follow.

Final Thoughts

In a sea of unnecessary remasters, Croc is a breath of fresh air and a game that actually warrants a remaster. I have had so much fun going back to this classic game. It’s been the most fun I’ve had in a while and is easy to just pick up and play.

I have given Croc the Thumb Culture Platinum Award because I had fun every second I was playing. I think the flashing gems need adjusting by the devs to make the game easier on the eyes. Aside from that, this game was perfect. It deserves nothing less than the platinum because it clearly isn’t planning on giving me one!
