The Innsmouth Case Review

The Innsmouth Case is a text-based, choose-your-own-adventure game based on The Shadow over Innsmouth by H.P. Lovecraft. The genre of Interactive Fiction is one of the oldest in video games, stretching back to the 1970s with Adventure. Technological advances mean these types of games are no longer restricted to a text-only experience and are often supplemented with images, animations and music.  Let's dive into Robot Pumpkin Games' horror comedy mystery adventure and see what's going on, shall we? The Innsmouth Case - There Cod Be Something Fishy Inn This Plaice I recently played Arcade Spirits, which is another example of an Interactive Fiction game and was very good. Other recent games include Doki Doki Literature Club+ and Overboard. Have you played any of these or others? Let us know...

Observer: System Redux Review

Way back in 2017, hot off the heels of Layers of Fear, developers Bloober Team continued the psychological horror trend with Observer. It would seem they have found their niche because Layers of Fear 2, Blair Witch, and The Medium followed. Observer: System Redux is the base game but with additional story content and improved graphics. The game itself is evidently influenced by things such as the George Orwell book Nineteen Eight-Four, the Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop role-playing game, and the movie Blade Runner. It even stars our favourite replicant, the late Rutger Hauer as Daniel Lazarski, the titular Observer, or neural detective. More on that later. Observer: System Redux - "All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain" - Rutger Hauer Observer: System Redux was initiall...

Foreclosed PS5 Review

Foreclosed is a cyberpunk action shooter with RPG elements experienced in graphic novel panels and stylised graphics. The title refers to when people are property and upon a company going under, their identity is being auctioned off. We begin with the protagonist, Evan Kapnos, being foreclosed and suddenly forced on the run. Kapnos is smack dab in the middle of a conspiracy and the only way to survive is with some help from allies is get to the person at the top and make them a counteroffer. Foreclosed is brought to us by Italian indie developers Antab Studio (Gridd series) and publishers Merge Games (Ultimate Chicken Horse). It is available now on PC (steam & stadia), Xbox One, Xbox Series S&X, PS4, PS5 & Switch. Going once, going twice... sold on Foreclosed ...

Dariusburst Another Chronicle EX+ Review

Can you believe that after 34 years Taito is still involved in making (or remaking) Darius games? How have they stood the test of time? What is it about Darius that keeps us coming back for more? Akin to its shmup brethren, R-Type and Raiden who are still going, it boils down to one thing. Replayability! More on that later. Let's talk about where Dariusburst Another Chronicle EX+ came from. Dariusburst was originally a PSP game released in 2009. A year later Dariusburst Another Chronicle was released into arcades with an update the following year called Dariusburst Another Chronicle EX. What we are looking at today is an enhanced port of the latter. What I have always loved about the Darius series, their unique selling point is their arcade cabinets. Just look at the beauty of it! Havin...

The Falconeer: Warrior Edition Review

The Falconeer: Warrior Edition is an enhanced version of the base game with some DLC included for good measure. The base game was first released in November 2020 on Windows & Xbox series S/X. This version brings the game to PS4, PS5 & Nintendo Switch and is available now. With his debut, Falconeer comes from developer Tomas Sala and indie game publisher Wired Productions. Sala developed the game solo and Wired is known for games such as Deliver Us The Moon. Taking place in Ursee, a world mostly water, various factions, and houses emerged, and all seek to gain power. As a result, the falconeers have become warriors, guardians, and anything else needed to survive, supported by their giant warbeasts. This review is based on the PS5 version and you should also check out Jay's...

Samurai Warriors 5 Review

As you may have expected, Samurai Warriors 5 or Sengoku Musou 5 as it is known in Japan is the fifth main installment in the Samurai Warriors series. Samurai Warriors started life in 2004 and itself is the sister series of Dynasty Warriors. Dynasty Warriors is a spin-off from the 1985 turn-based strategy series called Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Confused? Basically, Koei Tecmo has been doing this for over 35 years so it's fair to say they know what they're doing. Samurai Warriors 5 - A Cut Above The Rest - "It appears you have bested me, well, if you excuse me I will now retreat." Samurai Warriors 5 is a hack-and-slash game set in the Sengoku (Warring States) period in Japanese history and features characterisations of real people and real events. With 37 playable characters, the game...

Akiba’s Trip: Hellbound & Debriefed Review

Akiba's Trip: Hellbound & Debriefed is a Action RPG published by XSEED Games and developed by ACQUIRE Corp. This is an HD remake of the first Akiba's Trip game originally released on PSP back in 2012. Akiba's Trip: Hellbound & Debriefed was released on July 20th, 2021 on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4. So, I have a confession to make. I've never played any of these type of Japanese fighting games. Games like Persona 5 or Yakuza are all new to me. People love them but I've never played them until now. So here I am, ready to try something new. Akiba's Trip - It really is one weird trip Before I chose this game, I had never heard of this franchise before. The original port spawned four sequels and an anime series in Japan. So this seems to have a big follow...

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game Review

We're used to games being released a year before their namesake. For example, FIFA 21 releasing in 2020, but rarely is it the other way around. Well, thanks to a worldwide pandemic this is exactly what has happened, in a way. The event still hasn't happened yet but is still referred to as the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, or as it is officially known, the Games of the XXXII Olympiad. Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - Going For Gold The game was originally released in Japan, for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2019. But because of this pandemic, it never made its way to western shores...until now. Now things have calmed down a little bit, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 has since been released to the rest of the world on June 22nd, 2021 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Stadia. ...

F1 2021 Review

There is a change in the air in the world of Formula One. Last season was a bit of a strange one. At one point we didn't know if it was going to go ahead at all. But thankfully it did and Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes were dominant once again. So with the 2021 season underway, it is shaping up to be a very good one with Max Verstappen challenging Lewis for the championship. The F1 2021 season is going to be one to remember, that's for sure. Why am I telling you all this? Because this real-life season is entirely relevant to the game as you will find out later. "How you can crash into a wall without it being there in the first place is beyond me!" - Murray Walker F1 for me is what FIFA is to every Dave in the country. I must have the new game every year and I am never disappointed. As u...
