The Fabulous Fear Machine – PC Review

The Fabulous Fear Machine (TFFM) comes from developer Fictiorama Studios (Do Not Feed the Monkeys) and is published by AMC Games & Shudder. TFFM is an indie outbreak sim horror game with a fresh spin on the genre. Not your typical outbreak though, fear is what is spread through the machinations of the titular machine. The game is set across 3 distinct campaigns where each character makes a wish to Kirlian, a sentient fortune teller carnival-style machine. We're all cogs in The Fabulous Fear Machine TFFM tells its stories in comic book format, panels and all, reminding me of classic comics and pulp fiction horror. In return for helping them achieve their wish, Kirlian takes the character's life story for mysterious reasons. Through spreading fear, each character manipulates stock mark...

Super Bomberman R 2 – PC Review

Super Bomberman R 2 by Konami is the latest release in the Bomberman games. A sequel to the 2017 Super Bomberman R, it is available on all formats. Ready, Steady, Bomb! 6 years on, would this new Bomberman title still bring its historic charm to the gaming world? Let's take a look! Gameplay Super Bomberman R 2 provides both a single-player story mode as well as a single & multiplayer local or online battle mode. My main experiences of Bomberman games growing up have always been the legendary 4 player arena battles. I was happy to see that they were still a feature. When first playing the game you jump into the story mode where you meet the main character, White, along with their 7 other Bomberman friends. The cut scene is very long and arduous as it is very slowly revealed t...

Bilkins’ Folly – PC Review

When is a pirate not a pirate? When they’re a ‘treasure hunter’, of course! Sailing, swashbuckling and grog is all fine and dandy, but finding long lost booty is the meat of the matter. Of course, most modern pirate-themed games include this, as they should. But often it’s with the aid of a detailed map, HUD and quest markers. Bilkins’ Folly by Webbysoft takes it firmly back to basics, embracing the maps, methods and mania of a true treasure hunter. Percival Bilkins is the young heir of a line of famous treasure hunters, eager to live up to the family name. His mother and grandfather disappeared when he was just a young boy. Now of age, he sets sail with his faithful dog Drayton on a quest to find them. But a dreadful storm finds the pair shipwrecked on a deserted island without bearing...

Developed and published by Vector3 Studios, this is their first-ever title. Sunkenland is out now for early access on Steam for £16.50. The Sea Is Key To Survival Sunkenland starts the player with a near-naked character on deserted land, left with only the memory of being tortured and nothing more. Sunken cities are your only hope for survival, as they're rich in resources and essential to progress. Build bases, explore and survive on and off the land. Mythforce – PC Review

Mythforce is a roguelike RPG co-op adventure brought to you by developers Beamdog. The game was released on 12th September 2023. They claim throughout their promotions online to have captured the essence of 80s daytime cartoons in game form. Sounds interesting. I recently got a chance to check it out for Thumb Culture. Check out the review below. A Love Letter to Retro Cartoons Roguelike games have become commonplace in game stores in recent years. Often they are endless AI-generated levels added to mix things up for the gamer. I've played a few games with this added and while it certainly is fun, I'm a bit on the fence. Mythforce is a good example of roguelike done well, however. What are your favourite roguelike games that you have played recently? Let us know in the comments. Gam...

SPRAWL – PC Review

SPRAWL is a retro-style hardcore FPS available now on Steam and the Epic Games store. It was developed by MAETH and published by Rogue Games, Inc (Dust & Neon, Homebody). If you're looking for a fast-paced parkour shooter with bullet-time and a variety of weaponry, this may be the next one for you. DOOM + Ghostrunner = SPRAWL I'll be the first to admit that I'm not very good at parkour games such as Ghostrunner or Mirror's Edge. I can do simple jumping puzzles in most games. But running and gunning while traversing walls is completely beyond my ability most of the time! I wasn't sure how things were going to play out for me in SPRAWL. Thankfully after lowering the difficulty (only from Normal to Easy) I was able to get more of a handle on the mechanics without dying repeatedly. What ...

Resident Evil 4 (2023 Remake) Separate Ways DLC – PC Review

Much like the original Resident Evil 4, 2023's remake (RE4R) also has the Separate Ways DLC. Capcom has developed and published quality content here and the DLC is a great addition to the franchise. We experience Ada Wong's side of the story and how it weaves and intersects with Leon Kennedy & Ashley Graham's in some surprising ways. We also see how the femme fatale of the series operates in shades of grey but possibly changed after meeting Leon and the events of RE2. There is also the addition of Ada and Wesker to Mercenaries as an excellent addition alongside the DLC. I'm especially glad this content came out following the backlash against Ada's voice actress Lily Gao. I enjoyed her performance and some others disagree which is natural of course. I think we can all agree that the ...

Station To Station – PC Review

Have your tickets ready as we take a look at the railway simulation puzzle game, Station to Station. The debut game from Dutch developer Galaxy Grove aims to deliver cosy vibes through its wonderful voxel art, relaxing soundtrack, and chilled gameplay. Keep Calm And Carriage On I'm fairly partial to a relaxing simulation game and took a keen interest in Station to Station due to previously playing Train Valley. What are your favourite games in the genre? Let me know in the comments. Gameplay It's a vast, unconnected world out there in Station to Station. It's up to you to connect everything. Each level offers a new configuration of mountains and valleys, grass and water, and producers and consumers. To complete a level, all resources must be distributed where they need to go via fr...

The Tartarus Key – PC Review

Despite the plethora of high-definition scares out there, low-poly indie horrors have experienced a surge in recent years. There's an audience out there eager for PS1-style spoopy entertainment. Following the success of their visual novel game Aviary Attorney, Portugal-based studio Vertical Reach decided to trade sparrows for scares. From this came The Tartarus Key, a psychological horror adventure game with both a Saw-esque nature and an eldritch aura. You play Alex Young, an average teenager who wakes up in a strange mansion. She has no memory of how she got there, but cameras watch her every move. Doors are locked with puzzles and devious contraptions. And it seems as though she is not the only one trapped here. But things take an ominous turn when Alex begins to hear things, see thi...
