Last week we posted the news that Team Junkfish, the masterminds behind iconic horror-survival, Monstrum, are back! And boy oh boy are they back. Wilderdark was announced to a raptor-ous reception, and over this past week, we also had access to their new demo. Available now on Steam, so check it out here.
In The Dark, No One Can Hear You Scream
If you like what you read, I urge you to go and check out the demo yourself. Even Wishlist while you are there.
Gameplay
Being touted as a horror-survival, you are immediately greeted with a nice dark forest and a campsite. Don’t be fooled though, the campsite means that someone has come before you. You’ve been sent to this island where the dinosaurs and plantlife have been infected with some mysterious ectoparasitic organism. Meaning that everything might kill you.

You’ve been sent to the island to document what you see on the island. Collecting samples, and photographic evidence of what’s happening on the island. All in the search of immortality. You do this by being as stealthy as possible, stick to long grass, try not to make too much noise. The usual. Throughout your journey you will find evidence of what has happened before, segments of lore to bring you more and more into the narrative.
In the Wilderdark demo, the dinosaurs are pretty limited, with only a couple of species. Don’t let that fool you though, they will chew your knees and face quite happily. So just look around and pick up some sleep spores, throw these and you stand a chance of getting away from the stalking predators. You can even pick up pieces of meat from the parasitic plantlife to help you out against the velociraptors.

Graphics & Audio
This demo is stunning, it gives me so much hope for when the final version of Wilderdark hits the shelves. The environment is stunning, with lush trees and foliage everywhere. Oh, and the dinosaurs, man, the dinosaurs are amazing. The way they move is great; you can tell that so much care has been placed into designing the look and movement.
As mentioned before, Wilderdark is a stunning game. Although, unless you’ve got a beefy computer, upping the settings to Cinematic is going to tank that frame rate. It is worth a look, however, just to see how it looks. In fairness though, it’s nice to see a hefty amount of graphics options on a demo. Props to Team Junkfish there.

From a sound point of view, it’s eerie, creepy and in some places just plain gross. The squelches are a particular favourite of mine, especially combined with the fantastic visuals. Oh and don’t forget the star of the show… Trevor Rex. I’m merely assuming its first name is Trevor. Yes, there is a T-Rex and it’s petrifying!
Longevity
Now this is only a demo, so you are probably only looking at around an hour to explore and complete the demo. What there is, though, you will enjoy. Don’t get me wrong, there are some bugs but it’s not the end of the world. Just some graphical glitches here and there.

Final Thoughts
Wilderdark has the potential to be great. Using the horror-survival skills that Team Junkfish learned with Monstrum. The demo gives a glimpse into the final product. It gives us hope, plenty of hope for what is to come. I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing Wilderdark, and I think you will to. So all that’s left is for you to head off and download the demo for yourselves. Thanks for reading!
