Astronomics is a top-down space mining and exploration game by Numizmatic (Light Fingers). It launched into Early Access on Steam just yesterday i.e. February 10th, 2025.

Best Mining Game since Deep Rock

I’m always up for a chance to check out a new space or sci-fi game. Especially if they involve mining space rocks like in Astronomics. I wasn’t looking for something that felt overly complex like Elite Dangerous or EVE OnlineAstronomics caught my eye for looking simple and enjoyable at my own pace. Anything that brings something close to those Stardew Valley vibes, right?

I guess here is where the Asteroid and Economics meets: Buying your ticket home.

Gameplay

Astronomics is a casual, yet exciting adventure of asteroid mining. As an employee of Cube Corporation, you’ll mine your “claim” in space by landing on space rocks passing through. Do so by gathering all the resources you can find and carry and return to the station before the asteroid is out of your range. Here you’ll upgrade your ships, tools, and gear while selling off minerals to earn your ticket home to Earth. You can barely contain the excitement of going for the first time.

I found it interesting that the first few times I sat down with Astronomics I came upon a new realization. The first was that I could actually mine certain rocks on the asteroid surface once I had that tool. The second was that I could make a trip back to my freighter to dump resources and return for a second trip. And the third was upon mining some rocks I accidentally hit the vegetation – which resulted in finding the exact biomass I needed! These were only just the first few but by far some of the most game changing for me so I hope they help you!

I recommend the mining laser for your command bot asap!

As often as I kept sitting down to write this review for Astronomics, I often instead found myself just playing it. Though I’m not as far into as I feel maybe I should be for the time I’ve spent. That would really be the only thing I wasn’t fond of. If the pace picks up, even just slightly, I think it would improve the long grind as the player learns and gets those first few upgrades. It was certainly fun starting to play with the mining turret and cranes. Also determining which was the best asteroid for your time is interesting.

Graphics & Audio

Astronomics has a 3d pixel art inspired style. It is simple but effective in representing everything from your space person, to the different layers and textures of the asteroids you land on. The asteroids themselves are randomly generated so can easily be pieced together. It was just as easy on the eyes as the gameplay is on the nerves.

The background music in Astronomics is light and upbeat. I imagine that will change but be just as effective once I finally encounter pirates. It also wasn’t so repetitive that I was wanting to turn it off, either, which was great. There are so many games I just leave the music off or turn way down for that very reason.

Longevity

I’m not entirely sure of the longevity for Astronomics at this point. Being that it is only going into early access, I would say there is enough content there. And there is more to come so it can only get better. As I said above, I kept having to tell myself to stop playing the game so I could get this review written! It has that pull because I want to keep playing to advance because I’m just so sure there’s so much more already there. Not to mention, a ticket to Earth is quite expensive and at the going rate – you’re going to be here a while.

Just getting to and from the freighter can be hazardous.

Final Thoughts

I’ve really had a blast checking out Astronomics and mining myself some asteroids. Each little expedition was able to be as long or short as I wanted. Even better was the kind of learn as you go gameplay that kept me having those “Ah ha!” moments. With the developers planning to be in Early Access for just under a year, there’s already plenty you keep you busy if you want to join in on it now. So be sure to check it out over on Steam. Now I’m going to go back to playing the game.
