As the racing game genre continues to evolve, few titles have remained as respected and beloved as the Assetto Corsa series. With the early access of Assetto Corsa Evo released on 16th January to PC, the developers at Kunos Simulazioni are poised to elevate the franchise to new heights. Building upon the solid foundation of its predecessor while introducing exciting new features and improvements, Assetto Corsa Evo is set to deliver a thrilling racing experience unlike any other.
Realism to the extreme
How does Assetto Corsa Evo feel at the moment? What can be expected from the highly anticipated title before its full release?

Gameplay
The early access roadmap currently means that there are 5 available tracks to sample along with 75 highly detailed cars. The gameplay mechanics of Assetto Corsa Evo promise to combine realism with accessibility, ensuring that both simulation enthusiasts and casual gamers can enjoy the experience. From my experience of throwing some Audis and Ferraris around the courses, the game certainly features incredibly unique physics and tire models that replicate the feel of real-world driving.
Having Brands Hatch just up the road from where I live, I know it very well. It is incredible to drive around the circuit in Assetto Corsa Evo and experience not only the laser-scanned track but also to view all of the detail that is around the outside thanks to the photogrammetry that has taken place. I tend to park my car inside the circuit on the Southbank, so to see it fully recreated complete with parking barriers brings it all to life for me.

Each of the road and racing cars that I tried, such as the BMW M4 CLS, Ferrari 296 GTB and Alpine A290 Beta, each handled in their own unique way. I did end up in a few barriers as I did not respect the difference in braking zones! Electric cars are also something else, the quiet whine makes racing so strange!
Cars, cars, cars
While the driving view can be adjusted, the cockpits were very immersive, again showing off the high level of detail that the developer has put into the game. Eventually, players will be able to choose from a diverse line up of vehicles spanning various classes. These can be rented as well as owned in your garage.

Back to school
One of the new features of Assetto Corsa Evo is the driving academy. Here you have to prove yourself worthy of driving new cars by completing associated license tiers of tests. This also rewards you with more XP and credits. Similarly to GT, the better you do, the higher the rewards. While this mode is currently unavailable, it will be reinstated soon for further testing. Can you do enough work to drive your dream car?

AI
Another standout feature in Evo is the refined AI system, which has been overhauled to provide a more immersive racing experience. The new AI behaviour adapts to player performance, creating races that are both challenging and engaging. In addition, multiplayer modes are having significant improvements, allowing for seamless matchmaking and more competitive racing. Multiplayer is currently unavailable and is coming out soon as the road map timeline progresses. With options for both casual play and intense competitions, gamers are sure to find something that suits their preferences.
As the timeline progresses I look forward to the introduction of 3-screen support for the sim racers out there as well as VR. I hope to report back as the game evolves.

Graphics & Audio
Visual fidelity and sound design are pivotal elements in any racing game, and Assetto Corsa Evo aims to set a new standard. The DirectX 12 graphics engine has received substantial enhancements, optimizing the environment and vehicle models to create an astonishingly realistic experience. Weather effects, dynamic lighting, and detailed track layouts contribute to an immersive racing atmosphere that allows players to feel the thrill of high-speed racing. At times you almost want to pause the race and just take it all in.

In terms of audio, Evo has prioritized authenticity. Kunos have ensured that players can hear an array of engine sounds and auditory feedback that closely mimic real-life counterparts. Tire screeches, engine roars, and environmental sounds bring each race to life, while enhanced audio cues will help players gauge their performance on the track. Coupled with 3D spatial audio, this creates an engaging experience that fully envelops players in the racing world.
Longevity
One of the most appealing aspects of Assetto Corsa Evo is its commitment to longevity. The developers have revealed plans for post-launch support that includes regular updates, patches, and an expansion of downloadable content (DLC). This means new cars, tracks, and game modes will be introduced, ensuring that players can continually engage with the game long after its release. The 1600km² open world map of the Eifel region in Germany is something I truly look forward to!

The modding community, which has been a cornerstone of the Assetto Corsa franchise, will play a crucial role in the longevity of Evo. Kunos has acknowledged the importance of mods, providing tools and resources that encourage creative input from players. This commitment means that fans can expect a constantly evolving game environment, fuelled by community contributions. No doubt it won’t be that long until we see a Thomas the Tank Engine, Peppa Pig, or GTA character appear.

Final Thoughts
While Assetto Corsa Evo is still in development, the glimpses I have seen so far suggest a promising future for the franchise. With its focus on realism, an enhanced gameplay experience, stunning graphics, and robust audio, Evo has the potential to become a standout title in the racing genre. The commitment to post-launch support and community engagement further solidifies its position as a game that will remain relevant for years to come.
For gaming enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the Assetto Corsa legacy, the anticipation is palpable. As the release date approaches for a full release earmarked in Autumn, the excitement builds for what is sure to be a game that not only meets but exceeds expectations in the world of racing simulation.
