Fans of mobile games will no doubt have times when their fingers cramp from pressing on the screen. Whether it’s a shooter or a racing game, there are so many different control methods that it can get a bit daunting. Well, the Acer Nitro Gaming Controller aims to solve those issues.
Control Comes First
These mobile controllers have been around for some time, but they each offer something slightly different. Let’s read on to find out what makes this offering from Acer tick.
Design Features
Featuring a fold-up design, allowing the controller to fit neatly into your pocket. Acer have gone with the traditional ‘Xbox’ layout of sticks and buttons. Probably more so because of ease, but also it’s the most common controller design out there. Damn Sony and their being different!
Opening the box, you are greeted with the controller. Obviously. Alongside a number of rubber pads to ensure that whatever device you use sits comfortably. Simply plug your phone in and away you go. A little red light comes on to let you know it’s activated. Launch your favourite mobile game and enjoy with more precise controls. You can also charge your phone whilst using it, just plug a USB-C cable into the bottom of the right side of the controller. Ensuring that your battery lasts for those long mobile gaming sessions.

Compatability
Talking about devices, as long as you have an iPhone 15 device, iPad mini (6th Gen) or an Android 9.0 or later device, you are good to get your mobile game on. Just remember to take off a case if you have one. From my experience of using a couple of iPhones, if you have a protective case, it doesn’t slide into the USB-C port enough.
In Action
I tried a number of games using the Nitro Gaming Controller, and I have to say that I was suitably impressed. Whilst it doesn’t have the features that the Razer Kishi Ultra did, it is practical and does what it needs to. Even the TC Mini Crew were able to comfortably play some mobile games. Becoming a nice little gadget to whip out when the inevitable moans of boredom come out.

Playing Call of Duty Mobile was a lot of fun. It’s never been a game that I’ve spent an extended amount of time with, but using the controller changed it. Although I doubt I would play it for the same timeframe that I’d play on my PC. I lost a good amount of time running around and shooting people.
Unfortunately, with Fortnite not being on Apple devices in the UK, I wasn’t able to give that a try outside of PlayStation 5 via remote play which I did very nicely in my garden!
Final Thoughts
If you game a lot on mobile, then the Nitro Gaming Controller might be perfect for you. With its small form factor when it’s folded up, and its comfortable grips. It’s great for playing on during those long train rides. Or even if you just fancy being away from your computer. It all just depends on what services you have available to you for gaming.
The Acer Nitro Gaming Controller gets a Thumb Culture Silver Award.
