It wouldn’t be a new piece of Nintendo tech without The Legend of Zelda. Thankfully with the release of the Switch 2 came new updated versions of both Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom. As I’m a newcomer to the games, I’m taking my time to play through them fully. So this article is more a little piece about what updates have been brought to the Switch 2 versions of the game.

Breath Deeper But Don’t Cry

For those who don’t know about either games, firstly, where have you been hiding? Secondly, they are both incredible open world experiences.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Being first released on the Wii U and the Nintendo Switch back in March 2017. This game focuses on Link waking up after a 100-year sleep. Those of you with kids, that will definitely hit you in the feels. Link wakes up to a work that he no longer remembers. Setting out on an adventure to save Princess Zelda from Calamity Ganon and prevent the world from being destroyed.

The story guides you in gently, giving you little tutorials as well as challenging your fighting skills. With a large open world area for you to explore, however you see fit. There is much to explore throughout the world, take on sidequests, and collect items as you venture out into the world of Hyrule.

With the release of the Switch 2 version you can expect some visual upgrades from the 900p of the Switch and 720p of the Wii U. Expectations are always difficult, but thankfully Nintendo have upped the resolution to 1440p/4K on the Switch 2. Obviously you need a compatible TV/monitor to get the top end of the resolution. But what Breath of the Wild does do is run at a buttery smooth 60fps alongside a better draw distance, faster loading times and increase shadow quality.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Initially released in May 2023, Tears of the Kingdom, we join Link again in a journey through Hyrule. This time in the skies, and the depths. Set a number of years after Breath of the Wild, we join Link and Princess Zelda on a journey to explore a cavern beneath Hyrule Castle. Down here there is a substance called gloom that has some nasty effects on people. A whole host of calamities ensue, and once again Link sets out on a journey to rescue Princess Zelda. She should really be a lot more careful.

Using the same open world mechanics as the previous game, just building on them and improving pretty much all of them. Making use of Zonai devices allows you to gain the advantage during combat, exploration, or even to construct new vehicles. It’s a pretty impressive system, where only your imagination is your limitation.

When it comes to the Switch 2 version, the game runs at a glorious 1440 upscaled to 4K when docked, and 1080p when in handheld mode. You also have HDR support and stable 60fps giving you a much better experience than the Switch 1 version. This only being 900p when docked or 720p in handheld.

Worthwhile Upgrades

So are these updates in performance worth it? Well if you already own the original games, as well as the Nintendo Expansion Pass you get a free upgrade on your shiny new console. If you are new to the games, then I definitely would recommend picking up at least Breath of the Wild. At least then it gives you a little taste into just what is in store across the two games.

Final Thoughts

With some great updates that really push the new system and give you an idea of just what is going to be possible. I would be picking these up at your first opportunity just so that they are in your library of games to play through.

Thanks for reading, it’s time for me to head back into Hyrule!
