Gameplay

The journey begins with being the founder of a brand-new production company. Allowing you to produce the movies you have always dreamed of. As shown in the above image, how you gain your status is completely up to you. Will you have it fed to you on a silver spoon? Or will you gain acclaim through the traditional loan route? Once you decide, you are thrust into a world of ambition, rivalry and domination.

Every decision you make impacts your movie’s critical acclaim and box office potential. Therefore, you need to make the correct decisions to shape the history of the Hollywood movie industry. To do this, you need to make movies. Now, it seems easy, right? Well, The Executive: Movie Industry Tycoon highlights the trials and tribulations of the movie industry.

Certified fresh!

To get started,  you need to create your first movie. This is done by choosing your newest creation’s theme, genre and target rating. There are plenty of choices to experiment with, so you must choose wisely to create the next big hit. Once you’ve made your decision on what you produce, you next need to decide how you will produce. You are given a wide choice of different directors and actors, who all bring different skills.

The movie journey doesn’t end at the final cut. You also need to decide how to distribute it. Having a team behind you will help you make these decisions. Each distribution route has unique risks and rewards, so choose wisely!

Capitalize on demand

Not a bad performance!

To keep progressing through Hollywood, you need to continuously analyse your latest movie’s performance. This allows you to understand what themes and genres work, and what does not work. This in turn rewards you with research points that can be used to expand the company. They can be used to unlock staff roles and new themes.

Graphics and Audio

Another great aspect of the game is its graphics and playability. The graphics are simple, fitting the aesthetic of the game. They don’t try to be hyper-realistic, like some management simulation games. I love how The Executive doesn’t try to be too fancy by having the office as its central point. It’s simple, but it’s done well.

In addition to this, I love the small details, which The Executive does well. An example of this is the change from light to darkness. As you are fast-forwarding to create your film, the months go by. You can tell by how it constantly goes from light to darkness to signify this. It may not be a big thing, but I love little additions like this!

History in the making.

The audio within the game also suits the atmosphere well. I especially like the opening music to the game. It bears some similarities to some great movie music.

Final Thoughts

I had a great time playing The Executive: Movie Industry Tycoon. Honestly, I am not sure if it would’ve been a game I would’ve picked up myself. But I am very happy I was allowed to play because I am now obsessed. Goblinz Publishing and Aniki Games have given us a great management game, which I implore you to give a chance. There is a lot to enjoy, and there is plenty of replayability – it would be hard to become bored!
