Love Wizards? Love RPG Strategy games? Well, grab your broomsticks. And make sure you’re stocked up on bones of newt. Because we’re going to use our best spells and breach this review of Tactical Breach Wizards!

Tactical Breach Wizards is an Adventure, RPG, Strategy from Suspicious Developments.  These folks made one of my favourite games from 2013: Gunpoint. I’m not exaggerating when I say it felt a bit of an honour to get to review this game as I spent hours on Gunpoint. As I’m familiar with Suspicious Developments I already know the story and characters for Tactical Breach Wizards are in good hands.

I’m going to need more blood.

Gameplay

Tactical Breach Wizards is a turn-based tactics game in which you lead a team of renegade wizards in Kevlar. The game starts you out with a nice tutorial where you discover you are playing as Zan. Gameplay is easily understandable as you start to get a handle on the situation and how the spells work. Each of your wizards has a unique set of abilities which is fun as it means there is something for necromancers and transformation fans alike. The free rewind feature means you can play out as many wild scenarios as you want. You never know what may work, and if it doesn’t? Just rewind and try again! Once you reach the last part of the stage, you’re given a choice between saving your teammate or the hostage. Whichever you choose, only saving the hostage is the only way to end the mission.

I do love some of the mechanics they have us utilized and the spells they made for each character. There’s even a lot of jabs given to one another during cutscenes, with the bonus of us getting to choose the lines as well. Honestly, the fact that the characters make jokes in their situation makes the whole experience fun as all it can be.

Graphics & Audio

To some, the graphics look slightly low resolution, but the devil is in the details. The team at Suspicious Developments knew what they were doing when choosing to stick to this graphic style. It is seamless playing on either PC or the Steam Deck which is wonderful. Then there’s the amount of items and details within the creative magic weapons and animations. Throughout my playthrough of Tactical Breach Wizards I never dipped into 60 FPS. Nor did I come across any glitches.

Even the menu when you’re choosing either a mission, an upgrade or the flowchart are impressive choices for the theme. I grew curious about what objects they might have used to create the sounds for not only the weapons and spells, but “that” door as well. There’s even the soundtrack that beautifully evolves with each level we enter.

Even in my dreams, I have to breach my way out of it.

Longevity

Tactical Breach Wizards takes about 14 hours for anyone to beat the game when sticking to the story on its highest difficulty. Although to make it easier for new players the developers have done something I rarely ever see. You can not only make your character weaker or stronger. But add this choice to enemies too. This means players can customize the difficulty in a variety of ways. Truly adapting play for everyone. The amount of time I’ll be spending to 100% the game might be double the campaign time, but I’ll enjoy the whole thing.

Final Thoughts

Tactical Breach Wizards was exactly the strategy game we needed in this gaming economy. It engages my brain with the whole puzzle of each stage. Whilst the humour within the cutscenes and dialog options have me immersed.  I honestly wish and hope for DLC to continue more of the story or something to keep me going. For now I will have to make do with the make my own stages mode. I believe anyone reading this review should pick up this game and love it as much as I did.

I give Tactical Breach Wizards the Thumb Culture Platinum Award
