A used towel, that’s $250 easy.

The simulator genre never ceases to amaze me with how many concepts can spring forth from it. Storage Hunter Simulator has the player bidding on abandoned storage lockers and trying to make your money back, plus profit. I’m definitely coloured intrigued, and since this game will release in Early Access, there’s potential for far more content even further post-launch.

Where to begin?

Gameplay

There’s no overall story to Storage Hunter Simulator. You dive right in by choosing between one of two characters, male or female. After choosing, you’re standing at your house with your trusty pickup truck and laptop, ready to do some bidding. Using the laptop, you can see what bids are available today, what time they run between, and how much the deposit costs to partake.

And that is how you stack folks.

Since this game is an open world and features two towns, you’ll drive your pickup to the location on the map in time. Thankfully, the map allows you to mark locations to help you find your way.

Bidding

Once you arrive, bidding can begin. At the top of the screen is the overall bid for the locker, and you have to press E to put your bid in. If you win the bid, you can now sift through your locker and see what you’ve bought. Some items, such as a bathtub, bottles of beer or trash bags, you can instantly sell with just a click. However, some items need fixing and you won’t be able to sell these immediately. Though later in the game you can also fix up items to improve their item quality, and therefore earn more money from them.

I just gotta have it!

After this, it’s time to load everything into the back of your truck (occasionally defying physics) and take them to the stores. You can upgrade your truck to a moving van later on to carry more items. Don’t forget you’ll also need to pay attention to your fuel gauge. When you’re running low stop by the nearest petrol station to refuel.

Verifying & Selling Goods

Aside the items mentioned above, other items will need you to verify them. You can’t sell these items without verifying. While some items you verify yourself, some you’ll have to take to certain stores. With different item types needing different stores. Verifying items in the store does take in-game time and costs a small fee.

I find bodies in these units way too often.

While you sell most things to the pawnshop, you’ll sell other items at specific stores, such as the military and equipment store. The higher quality an item is, the longer it takes to sell. Locked items such as chests are a job for the locksmith, which, like verifying, takes in-game hours and costs a small fee.

Graphics & Audio

Storage Hunter Simulator’s graphics aren’t too bad. They aren’t amazing but decent, especially for an early access game. I think it could do with some lighting tweaks to add some more shadowing possibly, but overall I think it’s fine. My only minor gripe is how quiet the game is most of the time. There’s no ambient music and even when driving in the vehicle, it’s mostly silence, excluding the sounds of the vehicle itself and tweeting birds. The addition of just a radio station in the vehicle would easily remedy this, even if they didn’t want to add ambient music.

Final Thoughts

The game is a lot larger than what I anticipated. I thought Storage Hunter Simulator would have a smaller map and the gameplay would mostly be made up of a bunch of repairing mini-games. The game can get a little grindy when trying to earn money, but I think some adjustments over time will fix that. Especially if the developers aim to add more skills, as at the moment the game only has two Verifying and Fixing. The only bug I encountered during my preview playthrough, was when attempting to move an item (a rare urn, in this case). It clipped through the floor so I couldn’t get it anymore. Other than that Storage Hunter Simulator runs well.
