As a massive fan of F1, I was overjoyed to hear that the partnership between F1 and Lego was unveiled in November 2024. Now, in March 2025, I have finally been able to get my hands on the Speed Champions line up. With the F1 season beginning on Sunday 16th, there is no better way to get your F1 fix now. Each Speed Champions set can be brought now, setting you back £22.99 each.
Do you like fast cars?
The Speed Champions line-up, alongside its LEGO City, LEGO DUPLO, and LEGO Collectibles companions, are the first step in this multi-year partnership. This line-up caters to an entire fan-base, which Emily Prazer, Chief Commercial Officer of Formula 1, shares this excitement:
“Formula 1 and the LEGO Group are proud to unveil the first product range of our partnership. This fantastic range caters to our entire fan base. With each set celebrating a crucial element and the intricate details of the world of Formula 1. From the pitstops and team garages, to the car itself. We share our fans excitement to see this special partnership come to life. And I cannot wait for fans to start building.”
Lights out and away we go
Ever since the LEGO F1 Speed Champions sets were announced, I have been eagerly awaiting their release. As much as I want all 10 sets, this would set you back a whopping £229.90. So, as anyone would, I limited myself to 5! Each set comes with a set of instructions, which can also be viewed online. Completely dependent on your preference. Within the instructions there is also a page dedicated to all the other sets in the series. Which does not make me want to buy more…
Will these be making a pit-stop into your garage?
Individually, each car is not a big build. The Ferrari, for example, is just 275 pieces, while the Mercedes is 267. The cars themselves are also quite small, coming in at 20cm in length and only 8cm wide. When you compare these measures to their LEGO technic counterparts, such as the Mercedes Technic set (42165), they are considerably smaller. This is particularly good for storage reasons. If they take up less room on the shelf, that just means more room for LEGO right?
Each set becomes with six bags in total. The build is completed in three sections. Bag one and two for the first section. Bag there and four for the second section. And finally bag five and six for the third section. In addition to this, each set comes with a plethora of stickers. This helps to replicate the true F1 car, as they are all covered in sponsors to help promote the team.
No Driving License Needed
All of the F1 cars bar 2 of this set are available for those 10+. The Red Bull and their sister team Visa Cash App RedBull VCARB are for those 18+. This is purely because they are the Red Bull brand, and with this being an energy drink, it has to be 18+. For those that are younger than 10, there is still fun to be had. Amazingly, with this partnership there is also LEGO DUPLO and LEGO city sets. These are made for the younger audience to experience the fun that F1 fans have been having with the Speed Champions launch.
One small detail that I have particularly liked with these builds is the variety in tyre compounds. LEGO has not stuck with one compound for all models. There is a variety of soft, medium and hard tyre compounds. It is little additions such as these that add to the build.
Green light or red light?
Although I have only experienced 5 out of the 10 builds, I would be recommending this set to anyone. Especially if they are fans of F1. These are a brilliant addition to the LEGO Speed Champions line-up. And I am beyond excited to see what else there will be in this new F1 and LEGO partnership.
