0 The vast majority of you reading this will already know what KontrolFreek Thumbsticks are. They are small rubber caps that aim to improve grip, accuracy and even the look of your controller.
We were lucky enough to be sent a set of the PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 versions of the Minecraft ones. Arriving in the post in all their bright green glory we got to work.
You Can’t Kontrol Everything
The science is there; raising the height of the thumbsticks means that you have more control over the small inputs that you can carry out. It all makes sense, but it does take a little bit of getting used to at first.
There are a number of designs out there as well as different purposes. For example, I used to have a set that were designed to give you more control when playing a racing game. Ensuring that your finger didn’t slip off at the important moments.
The Minecraft ones were slightly concave with a creeper face printed in very soft rubber. They were comfortable to use as well as looking great. Both on the PlayStation 5 and on the Switch 2.
Choices
If you venture over to the KontrolFreek website then you will be graced with so many choice you might not know where to start. If you were looking to get your first set, I’d probably recommend just getting a set like these Minecraft ones. They just sit on top of the normal thumb stick, maybe giving you an extra 5mm in height.
But that 5mm really adds up when you start to look at the amount of control that you are given. It essentially increases the length of the level arm, meaning that even smaller movements on the thumbstick are possible. Not only are they possible though, but they are also controllable. Meaning you’ll hit more headshots, have better control when you head into the apex. Or even just wanting to run around on your new favourite open world shooter. I’m looking at you Borderlands 4.
Final Thoughts
All in all the KontrolFreek product has been around for a long time, and due to their popularity will continue to be so. Either get on board with the KontrolFreek revolution, or you might just get left behind.
