Choosing the perfect keyboard can be one of the most difficult things to do when buying for your set up. With budget friendly options, different switches and layouts, it can get very overwhelming. Well, we got our hands on the Fantech Super Maxfit Air 83 and took it for a test drive to see whether this is worth adding to your list of keyboards you might want to invest in. Available from the Fantech website it will set you back £51.
Retro designs with modern aesthetics

Design
The Maxfit Air 83 has an ultra thin design with a classic grey finish and a few pops of colour on the arrow keys. Mine arrived with brown low profile switches that had a nice enough clicky sound for me. There are three different angles you can use, the basic flat angle and then two different height legs you can utilise to suit your needs. It’s a pretty small keyboard, partly because of its ultra thin body. But overall it just feels super small in comparison to other 75% keyboards I’ve used. Saying that, this is part of its charm, though, and if you’re someone with very little room to breathe on your desk, then this is the perfect compact size to fit in amongst a busy desk space.
Unfortunately when I received my Fantech Maxfit Air 83 review sample it had became slightly warped in the time that it had taken to get over to me. These things do happen but it was annoying to have to put a bit of paper underneath one corner of a brand new keyboard. All so that it would stop rocking as I typed. Despite that, I do think this is a pretty cool looking keyboard. I’m a fan of the simplicity of it.
Features
As I mentioned, the Maxfit Air 83 is a 75% keyboard which comes with low profile brown or red switches. Unfortunately, whilst the key caps are swappable, the switches themselves are not. If you’re someone who likes a full customisable board then this isn’t the right keyboard for you. If you’re looking for a budget friendly option and you’re not wanting to change switches, then the Maxfit Air 83 is definitely still a viable choice for you.
For fans of bigger keyboards there is also a 99 key variant available.

Connectivity
There are three connectivity options for the Maxfit Air 83 – Bluetooth 5.0, wired and 2.4ghz wireless. I predominantly used a wired connection however the Bluetooth connectivity worked really well. The keyboard itself has around 90 hours of battery life with the RGB activated, and approximately 400 hours with it off. That means you can get plenty of hours of gaming in before you even need to think about plugging in. Outside of gaming, the keys are pretty reactive. You also have the option to switch from a windows to a mac layout, which is a useful feature!
When the battery does get low and needs charging it becomes really obvious because you start to drop keys or have delayed responses. It was one of the reasons that I moved over to just playing wired. It isn’t the end of the world but if you’re not paying attention and you’re in the middle of something, the drop in connectivity can ruin the moment.
Software
You can turn the RGB lights off directly from the keyboard, as well as changing the lighting pattern. However, you can also plug your keyboard into your computer and use Fantech software to take customisation even further and even record macros. It’s pretty straight forward. Although the bright yellow interface can cause a bit of strain on your eyes – keep that in mind when you’re plugging in!

Final Thoughts
The damage that was done to the Fantech Maxfir Air 83 in transit did spoil the delight of trying out a new keyboard, I have to admit. If I had paid for the keyboard I certainly would be an unhappy customer. There’s not a lot that is more infuriating than a constantly wobbling keyboard. That aside, the typing was smooth, the keys were reactive and it didn’t take up too much space on my desk even with my other keyboard out. It’s a budget friendly, out the box keyboard that works perfectly when kept simple. The Fantech Maxfir Air 83 is a nice intro keyboard for people that are just stepping into PC gaming or for those who are already deep in the PC world.
Overall I would have to give the Fantech Maxfit Air 83 the Golden Thumb Culture Award.
