Cyber Farmer, is a new sim being released by FreeMind S.A. and takes us to a post-apocalyptic world. Where we must attempt to bring life back to the wasteland. It is entering its early access life cycle on Steam now. If you are interested in other sim games, then might I suggest checking out some of our other reviews?

Would you like some digitally enhanced lemons?

A woman with blonde hair and blank expression is speaking through a tablet that the player is holding.
Oh, this model is just terrible.

Gameplay

We do get a little bit of a set-up for Cyber Farmer‘s story. The Earth has become a wasteland, thanks to nuclear fallout. Luckily our character, Kaizmer, survived and has been fortunate to inherit his late grandfathers old farm. Why is it always a grandfather? So, we are now tasked with attempting to restoring the Earth to sustain life once again.

I need to be able to actually grow plants first.

The tutorial gives you a janky, but simple rundown of the mechanics. Water will need to be purified at the well, and we are able to control machines for ploughing fields so we can grow stuff. Sadly we find out the soil is too spoiled to actually grow anything. But we are able to create pods that aid with growing plants. We need to connect them to a power/water supply to work. However, since the everything is broken, in order to get power we need to create biofuel. We can do this by offering crops, or dismantling bombs left behind from the fallout. Doing so will trigger a mini-game.

There is basically nothing to crafting besides a few fences and chests. To monitor your water and electrical output, you will use a tablet that also provides the player with a connection to their old space station. This serves the player by giving access to daily quests, and progressing the plot.

Graphics & Audio

Typical of most simulators, Cyber Farmer has the staple dated textures and low-detail menus. While the lighting and some loading screen images look pretty good, that’s most of the positives done and dusted. While I appreciate that it’s in early access, it looks more like it’s in alpha. Many of the quests don’t even have titles yet, with most quests’ names being ‘¿ Daily Quest ?’. The worst example of the graphics is a character model for one character you get quests from. I’m not too bothered by lower-quality graphics, but she looks atrocious, and it looks like they slapped her together in 5 minutes.

The only thing that I actually managed to build after 2 hours.

Longevity

I struggled to even get the four hours I dumped into Cyber Farmer, mainly due to the poor gameplay mechanics. But I assume that you are building up to something in the end. And with the usual farming loop, you can put in a fair amount of hours at one point. The game has been getting several micro updates, but in the end my save file was broken. Removing what little progress I did do.

Final Thoughts

First I want to give the only positive to Cyber Farm, it runs. Now, everything else is just shambles. From the terrible physics, all the way to the game-play loop. I have been soft locked a few times, and have had to deal with text not appearing at all. Chest having a weird item cap is silly, same for the weight cap on them. I could not farm due to not having any money to purchase crops after the tutorial. And also the remote control was removed after said tutorial so I couldn’t use the machines to actually start farming.

I’m going to wait to see if the game improves over time, but I won’t hold my breath.
