Confronted has been out since October last year and was made by Grumpy Rock Studios (I love that name). It’s a new survival-horror which emphasises the use of making your own cover. I’ll find resources and attempt to stay away from what stalks me in the shadows. The game is currently in early access on Steam for £5.99. It only has one chapter right now, with two more on the way.
When Confronted, Hide Instead.

Confronted’s story starts with a narrated letter from a prisoner named Nicolae. Who is pleading for aid from a woman called Dorinela, who we play as? This leads us to go save him from Castle Radu.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Confronted so far is mainly walking and hiding. Hiding being the key thing to point out. Really early in the game, we get the turn screw. It’s the tool that allows us to make covers while hiding away. But to do so you’ll also need wood, which is the game’s resource (so far). Wood isn’t hard to find since it glows white and is visible from far away. Besides that, we also get a hammer to help remove locks from doors. However, this is a loud action and will draw the attention of the creature.

The creature itself doesn’t have any unique moves, and it plays like a cat and mouse. You make noise and it comes running. If it walks past you while hiding and no cover is up, it will instantly kill you. Or it did for me, at least. You can try barricading doors to impede the monster, but I found this pointless. It breaks it down in two hits. Confronted also has puzzles, but there were only two, so I won’t mention them anymore.
Graphics & Audio
The lighting in Confronted is what mainly steals the show so far. Especially within the darker areas when you receive the torch. It does well with setting the tone of a dark, damp dungeon. All while making everything look natural. When you do partially get a look at the creature, nothing really stands out. It reminds me of the Demogorgon from Stranger Things but with a shadowy haze.

The noises created by the creature when it walks around are crisp and, more so, when you can hear it screech from far away. I don’t play with headphones personally unless it’s multiplayer. But I confess, hearing it that clearly was impressive.
Longevity
Confronted wasn’t really all that long. I was a couple of minutes shy of an hour when I beat Chapter 1. But from what the Steam page says, the game will have two more chapters.
Final Thoughts
The first chapter I will admit piqued my interest for what’s to come. Gameplay wise it’s okay but nothing I can really say wow to. While making your own cover/hiding place is interesting, I felt it didn’t play as big of a part in the chapter. What really grabbed my attention were the creatures. I went in thinking it might be one threat, but was happy to see more. Although to avoid spoilers, I won’t go into it. I can’t say right now if Confronted is gonna be worth picking up. But maybe keep an eye out, as the story gets you interested near the end.
