Are you a lover of cats? Cat Rescue Story is the newest game from developer and publisher Nacon. Build your purrfect cat rescue sanctuary from the ground up, with some trouble along the way. Cat Rescue Story is now available on the PlayStation Store and retailers for £31.99.

This image shows a cream coloured cat in the middle of the screen, with their name hovering over the top. This name being "Granny Jiggles". In the bottom right you see the cats needs, with 2 out of 4 being ticked. In the bottom right of the screen you can see a love heart and question marks.

Gameplay

Cat Rescue Story begins with your great aunt Olivia disappearing, leaving you with a beautiful, yet run-down house. The goal for the player is to fix up the rescue whilst also taking in all kinds of stray cats. The more you renovate and decorate, the more room you will have for even more cats. And in complete honesty, you can never have too many cats. Cat Rescue Story boasts over 50 breeds throughout the game. From breeds we know and love, such as the Tabby Cat, to special breads such as the Rainbow Tiger. And yes, it is as elegant as it sounds!

As the cats are dropped off at the rescue in a box, it’s a surprise what type of breed you get. You can lure stray cats to the rescue by placing catnip outside the sanctuary. I recommend doing this as these tend to be the special breeds.

Pawsome work

Whilst in your care the kitties require four different needs to be met: grooming, play, health and food. In each case, a cat also a has unique need to be met. Sometimes they require all their needs replenished, while other times they just need one. The easiest of the four is the food requirement. Throughout your sanctuary, there will be plenty of food, water and litter stations. You need to ensure that you are keeping an eye on them, as they soon need replenishing. As with any stray, there is of course the risk of flees or wounds from the little kitty scraps they get into. But, don’t worry, as you have your trusty medkit. These allow you to disinfect wounds, remove ticks and flees and provide cream. Soon the cats will be feeling like they are a whole new feline!

Grooming, as in the screenshot above, provides 4 different kinds of brushes. These remove hair, leaves, dust and dirt. If the cat’s needs are relinquished, it may take a couple of grooming sessions to get them back to normal. Lastly, there is the play’s need, which is to keep the cats active by leading them around obstacles and tunnels to catch all the fish and mice. This is a fun addition to the game, which rewards you to help your progress throughout the game.

Once the cats’ are in tip-top shape, you need to pair them with the best human possible. Cats have their quirks and personalities, which you need to match with their adoptive families. The cat’s personality will emerge randomly as you care for them. Each adoptive family has a set of requirements that they would like you to meet. This may be that they want a specific breed of cat, or that they want a specific personality. The more that each adoptive family has in common with the cat, the more rewards you’ll get. These rewards are coins, gems and hammers, which are all needed to improve the rescue, and to buy cat supplies. At the very least, there must be at least one match requirement before adoption can take place.

Graphics & Audio

This game is completely adorable from its gameplay to its artwork. Every time I look at the kitties, I just want to put every single one in my basket and take them home. Not to mention that when you are introduced to the town folk the amazing artwork also shines. Each character comes with its own story, and their designs match them well.

It is frustrating how you can be blocked from moving in Cat Rescue Story. If one of the cats falls asleep in a small space in front of you, you cannot move. I lost count of how many times a cat sleeping in front of me prevented me from doing anything. I would have loved to have the ability to step over the cat.

This image shows "Carlos's shop". Carlos can be seen to the left of the screen, and all the items you can buy from the shop in the middle of the screen. These items include litter, food and water.

The background music adds to the calmness of the game. During my review playtime I got drawn into the game, repeating each of the cat’s needs. The music adds to this, as you find yourself in a cozy trance of making sure the cats needs are fulfilled.

Longevity

I think this completely depends on the time of person you are. Taking care of the cats is of course rewarding, however, it can quickly become repetitive. You essentially complete the same actions over and over again. I can see how for some people, the game would slowly disappear from their active games. Saying that, Cat Rescue Story does boast a decently lengthy story, with plenty of chapters to work through.

Final Thoughts

Overall, if Cat Rescue Story is on your wish list, I would encourage you to buy it. In all honesty, who doesn’t love cats? And if you don’t, what kind of monster are you? Players will easily get lost in this cosy and relaxing game.

Therefore, I will be rewarding Cat Rescue Story with the Thumb Culture Gold Award.
