0 Cursed Companions is an Action, Adventure, Co-op game from the minds at Crimson Forge Studios. It’s actually a unique take on the concept that we get from games like R.E.P.O, Yap-Yap, and Lethal Company. The difference between Cursed Companions is that after meeting the quota, we have to fight a boss. But I’ll cover more of them in the next section.

Gameplay
Cursed Companions has you playing for what I’m dubbing Kidney Beans. These Kidney Beans are in the service of the Queen, who must collect cursed treasures. However, there is one thing you must always keep to yourself if you don’t trust your friends, and that’s your “cursed word”. This task will either break your brain or have you meet your maker faster if it’s a word you use all the time. Sometimes the word is connected to a word for a spell.
Luckily, Crimson Forge Studios had the forethought of changing all magic words you use to help yourself and others. But you do need the spell to keep track of the magic words that work for both tools and enemies. Which I believe is clever to do, and it’s not expensive to just try and buy the book if you lose it. You honestly need to keep an eye on any changes to the phrases if you’re not careful. Now I should mention that your “curse word” can hurt you from anyone saying it…and I mean ANYONE!
When playing, please be careful of dying because your “cursed words” will increase the more times you die and then revive. Sure, there are ways to clean your mouth of the filth that you learn from the afterlife. The last thing I want to touch on is the boss battles you get into after meeting the quota. Now I could tell you what to do to beat them, but I think you’ll be satisfied learning on your own how to defeat them one by one.
Graphics and Audio
The graphics might be simple when starting off, but when you start to enter dungeons, you’ll see the real art. The amazing character design and the unique personality each mob has to their design. From the small mimic to the Horse Face monsters, I called a Rapidash on steroids. I even like some of the items’ appearance and texture, which just gives a new definition to what they are. For example, look at the Rebirth Egg; it looks like a dragon egg, but it has horns. So, you can really come them…”Deviled Eggs~”
Now since this game already has us being the key part of the audio, the OST and monster sounds is what I’ll cover today. We have the excellent voice lines being said to us when the Bride comes around to seduce us. To even one of the creepy laughs we heard from a certain boss I won’t name. There’s even a crate jukebox in the hub that has some bangers and has me and the team dancing.
Longevity
Cursed Companions is a game that can go as long as you’re able to and however long the patience of everyone is. We at Thumb Culture would have gone longer playing this game, but with work and responsibilities to continue playing a lot in a day. We did have one hell of a blast and had the craziest things happen. Like two of using the magic word to deactivate a trap to get everyone dead from it. But having the dice revival mechanic is fun to save on resources.
The 1.0 version of the game will have Act III coming in, and the game also has different game modes, including Challenge, Endless and Traitor mode. The fun and chaos are almost limitless, almost like our words.
Final Thoughts
Cursed Companions is a game that can go as long as you’re able to and however long the patience of everyone is. We at Thumb Culture would have gone longer playing this game, but with work and responsibilities to continue playing a lot in a day. We did have one hell of a blast and had the craziest things happen. Like two of using the magic word to deactivate a trap to get everyone dead from it. But having the dice revival mechanic is fun to save on resources. This game was fresh of air when it comes to its mechanics and the chaos that can be created from it. From the stacking cursed words you get from dying and getting treasures, to a certain monster you actually curse around.
Seriously, watching someone die just from a random curse is just hilarious. Or the phrases we have to utter to each other to heal or help us prevent from the curse from inflicting us. Know this: when playing this game, be aware you will have to say some weird or slightly cringe things. But, it’s worth it when someone keeps telling you “Mommy loves you” to heal.
